I just bought this diamond ring for my gf and I am afraid I am noticing a fisheye. I am not sure, as I am bad at seeing colors and other sighting nuances. Can you guys tell me what you think? It is a 1ct J color cushion cut diamond set in white gold with strong flour. I am worried I may have chosen poorly.

That looks like a tilt window in the first two pictures. I cannot make anything out in the last two pictures. Do you have better pictures (sharp, clear / in-focus and extremely close up) so that we can see the facet pattern of your cushion?

I can see a lot of crushed ice other than that I cannot make out anything you need better clear up close pics holding the diamond straight on or put it into a ring box or on the hand and take the photos looking straight down at the stone, without it being on an angle.

I'm sorry, only camera I have is my phone. I truly appreciate you time and helpfulness!!

HI:

Tell us what you like about the ring, why you were drawn to it--that lead to buying. Did your partner specially want a cushion?

cheers--Sharon

Most important question - are you still within your return period?
The above.

Yes I have 3 weeks for which I can return the ring. The diamond dimensions are as such :

Table : %61
Depth: %68.5
Girdle: Slightly thick to Thick
Cutlet: None
Flour: Strong
Measurements 5.52x 5.37x 3.68
LxW : 1.03
Excellent Polish
Very Good Symmetry
J
Vs1
1.01

I was drawn to the setting because even though the sides look like little leafs, I see them as the round part being the head of a penguin, and the two little leafs as penguin arms reaching up to hand the pebble to the other. I also chose the Cushion based off of it being a "Pillow" cut and that My GF loves being curled up in bed with her Pillow. I do know that this diamond appears small as the face is smaller and it could be considered "Chubby". I don't know much about all of this stuff, but I want each decision to be meaningful. I was just told no halo, and she likes sparkly haha. Too much freedom to decide lends worry! What are your first impressions upon seeing it?

Given that you can return it, I would. And it's not because it's a crushed ice cushion but because I think it is a leaky crushed ice cushion. It makes a X under the table with leakage in the NWSE ends making that X pronounced. The setting is very pretty though.

Not sure if this makes a difference but it totaled to $2840.00

I would not spend any amount of money on a leaky diamond. The purpose of a diamond is to sparkle like crazy and if I'm going to plunk down nearly $3K for one, I'm going to get the nicest one I can within that budget.

This. Please take advantage of the return policy.

Dude--thank you for sharing. The setting is lovely but the diamond does not do it justice.

How can we help you? I'd love to see your partner get a most beautiful diamond.

cheers--Sharon

Yes I agree return it and get one of better quality.

I would add that while trying to make your selection meaningful and symbolic is sweet, those aren't the things she is going to think about every day when she looks at her ring. You can work these meaningful touches into a setting with a beautiful ring in your budget. Engraving is always a nice way to add a personal touch, and I think you can engrave symbols as well as text if the width of the shank allows for it. The proposal can also incorporate some of these meaningful things (put her ring under or on her pillow? sew it to the flipper of a stuffed penguin? propose at the penguin exhibit at the zoo/aquarium? there's a whole other board for this type of discussion...)

What a cute setting and nice sentiment with the 'penguin hug'. I don't care for the stone either - it doesn't seem to sparkle or catch the light in any of your photos. If you want pricescope quality maybe let the experts here pick an alternative for you? I don't think the setting is super unique so the folks here would probably be able to find similar for you. Good luck whatever you decide.

I appreciate everyone's advice. The 2840 included the setting and the last three pictures were taken in my truck under very cloudy/rainy weather with very little sunlight. Does that factor in or no?

Here is in my office

Pictures are very hard to take, but you did a good job. The pictures clearly show what kind of diamond it is. In which pictures do you see what you think is the fisheye?

Now about the price. 2800 for the whole thing is definitely on the cheap side and getting a better cushion in that size will cost you more.

I get the feeling that you really want to keep the diamond. What JulieN posted is true; if you want something better cut though, it's probably going to cost more.

I want something she can be proud of. I don't want it to look cheap or that I did not care. However I don't make a lot of money, and I am willing to wait longer and save.

Either the first, second, or fourth picture.

ok so there are options.

first off, if you want to keep THAT setting, and your budget. Id suggest moving to a round.

this wouldnt be much more than you spent, with the same setting. Just make sure to ask if it was eye clean. BEing that its a round, it would most likely look about the same size, even though the ctw is less, as cushions tend to look smaller

it is with this setting right?

She wants a cushion or was that your choice?
Can you keep the setting (minus the cushion)?

Based on your answer, the PS regulars will be able to assist you better.

We may not be using the same terminology
I see what I think is fish eye, or what some people call fish eye, in 3/5

This is what I think I see
1: bucket of glitter and glare? maybe it is tilt window like Chrono says
2: tilt window
3: fish eye/leakage
4: crushed ice
5/6/7: leakage, fish eye, crushed ice
office: crushed ice, maybe fish eye but photo is not detailed enough.

heres a similar setting, with the little "arms" as you call it. a bit cheaper

i assume you picked the shape cushion, based on what you wrote, but im throwing in rounds as i think they are a good option for this setting and your budget- and the cushion this certain company has in stock is only a .7

Ditto. In the last office picture, I can see the "+" shaped leakage.

HI:

Here is some food for thought. Branded vintage style cushions; modern cutting = lovely sparkle. Wasn't sparkle one of her criteria?

Two stones--different color, clarity...fairly similar carat weight, yet different dimensions because of shape. Note the proportions (correlate to weight) compared to the stone you have. See WIM?

ETA: Niel and I posted at the same time......similar stones shown...

Amazing finds Neil - those settings are a very good likeness, especially the Blue Nile, though my preference is for the Gabriel - very pretty and feminine with the cathedral leaves.

OP: can you find out from your lady's friends or family if she has a preference for round or cushion?

Don't feel bad about your budget at all, what matters is that you've found the one and want her to have a beautiful ring. You were wise to get a return policy and look to the forum for help.

thats exactly the cushion i was thinking of.. i wasnt sure if he would want one that size in a cushion, but its a good price and would make a beautiful ring with that setting.

plus, you add a pave wedding band like this and youve got the sparkly aspect she wanted.
