Hi everyone,

I am a new user, I just found this message board after searching online. I was wondering if I could get some of your opinions on this engagement ring I just had custom made for my future fiance.

I had it made custom from a local jeweler. He did a great job and I love the ring, and I know it is just what she wants :-) . After getting home and looking at it very very closely under bright light, I noticed where the gold meets the white gold, there seem to be some flaws, blemishes, or imperfections, if you will. In the 2 side-view pictures attached, it actually looks like there is a tiny chip or something on one side. And on the other side of the ring at the same spot, the rose and white dont meet perfectly with a defined straight line which I think it would. It is more kind of blended together without a perfectly straight edge.

Is this normal and just part of the custom ring process and that nothing is truly 100% perfect? Or should I ask the jewler to take a look at this (could it even be fixed at this stage?) Or am I just too picky and specific?

Thanks in advance for your comments/opinions, I greatly appreciate it. I want to pop the question in a little less than 3 weeks.

Thanks.

While I do see the things you describe, you have to remember that you are magnifying these ''flaws'' and they won''t be that easily noticed under normal conditions. I say this because my custom ring, by a famous design house, is not perfect. One shoulder as it meets the basket is thicker than the other; one prong is slightly bigger than the others; one side is just a smidge off plumb (the design has a square pave halo around a princess cut stone), meaning it isn''t absolutely square. I''m the only one who has noticed any of these ''flaws''. Then I got to thinking. . . I could pick my ring out of a whole group of the same ring. It is unique, one of a kind, and no one has one exactly like it . . . because it is not ''perfect''. And, you know, nature doesn''t make the stone ''perfect'' either. Unless you have Donald Trumps money, you obviously did not get an entirely ''unflawed'' stone, did you?

If the things you see bother you, and you know you can''t tolerate them, contact the jeweler/designer right away. If it requires several weeks of work; propose first, tell her what bothers you about the ring, and send it back to be fixed then.

I cannot see what you are talking about. I am not sure if it is because of the tint on the picture. It looks very nice. It looks like it was handmade. I think she will love it.

I personally can''t tell, cause the pictures are so red-tinted from whatever lighting you had. But even if mass-produced pieces, nothing will be perfect. Unless your intended is a perfectionist, I''d let it go.

Holly,

Thanks for your feedback. You are right in that these flaws are magnified to me since I have been looking at the ring very closely, I bet most people wouldn''t even notice it. You also have a good point in that this is what makes the ring unique.

Thanks again and have a good night!

Thanks, Future Mrss. I hope she will love it!

I''ll try to take a better picture later, for some reason when I put my camera on the "macro" mode for taking pictures of objects up close, it gets that tint.

Thanks, Monkey. Im gonna try to get some better pics.

wow, that''s alotta ring! It''s lovely.

Beautiful ring! I don''t see the flaws.

Thanks. Yeah I know she likes rings with the bigger band.

Well I guess the imperfections / flaws I see aren''t too bad. Its just where that pink gold meets the white gold, that I thought it would have a more defined line and not be blended together and wavy, etc. But it is perfect in its own unique way!

That is a result of the soldering process. Even if the jeweller redid the entire ring, there is a very high probability that it would happen again (perhaps somewhere else in the design).

The nick, however, does bother me. Could it be polished out?

But, despite those very small flaws, the ring is amazing! You have great taste and your fiancee is a very lucky girl.

Thank you Lady_Disdain,

Yeah, I am gonna bring the ring up to the jeweler tomorrow and see if anything can be done about that nick. Thanks for your feedback!

I can''t see the things you describe either. It very much looks like it was custom/handmade, and I think that''s what makes it special. Very beautiful! Congrats!

Hi,

I read the thread twice before looking at the pics and I still don''t really see what you are describing. I think the ring is to die for,and your fiancee will love it! You MUST post hand shots once you propose! Good luck.

I do see your issues (the nick and the wave) and I am sorry you are getting nervous about it. If you are not happy, I don''t think it is unreasonable to ask for the jeweler to fix it. But, be prepared for him/her to tell you that they can''t. No harm in trying though. At least you will know you did your best. HUGS.

I agree with LD regarding the nick. That looks like a tool mark of some sort. It should be ''fixable''.

The ''wave'' between wg and yg: no big whup IMHO.

Thanks, Sapphire. I hope the nick is fixable, do you know how they would do it? Would they add more gold into the nick/chip and then smooth it out or something?

I just went outside and took some more pics with natural sunlight so everyone could see the real colors of the ring.

Ditto on the nick being something that they should be able to polish out or fix. As mentioned above, I think the waviness is a result of the solder. I''d definitely ask about the nick though!

OMG!! That is really pretty...She does not even need a wedding band with that...I like the thicker band. Those are some very pink diamonds...she is very lucky...when are you proposing? I cannot wait to see what she says.

I think she''ll love it and no one would ever notice those things.

Thanks! Actually, the diamonds around the center stone are white diamonds, but they are set in rose gold! I''m glad they look pink though.

Well everyone, I''m gonna go back to the jeweler tomorrow morning and hopefully he can fix that nick. Wish me luck!

Thanks.

Best of luck! And btw - I think you did an amazing jov designing a lovely ring!

I don''t think that the ''flaws'' will be that noticeable to the naked eye, but I do think that the beauty of the ring will be! It is gorgeous!!
