This i so fun, hah. I played with the light and took some photos, Weird though, all my pink spinels and rubies have the fluo effect.

And not just that, an unheated sapphire and a mint garnet also glows different color under UV light. Could someone tell me why is that and what's the cause?

First, daylight shot of the spinels, and then under UV light

the sapphire

Why does sapphire have fluo?

now the mint garnet

I'm totally clueless about why it glows

What is the strength and type of your light? I am asking because it seems really strong (the entire table behind the stones are super pink as though it fluorescences too). I wonder if what you have isn't a true UV light but instead a 400nm photon LED light with a purple beam colour. At this particular wavelength, green gossular garnets reacts turning orangish.

The mint garnet glows because it has some chromium (which glows under UV light). As far as I know, only mint garnets or tsavorites are the only kinds of garnets that glow under UV.

Some sapphires do glow under UV light. There was a thread around here somewhere about that effect in some sapphires, but I can't find it now.

I thought chromium glows under the Chelsea filter, not UV light source?

ditto, my chrome tourmalines don't glow at all last night when I try.

I'd to clarify my posts above:
If a stone (garnet or corundum or beryl or whatever) is coloured by chromium, it will fluorescence.
If it is coloured by vanadium, there will be no reaction.

Secondly, a good UV light source will give you accurate results. The cheapo coloured LED lights being passed off as UV lighs on eBay will cause almost every stone to look as though it has fluorescence.

Hi TL, do all tsavorites glow or only part of them? Cauz all my tsavorites (well, only 2) didn't glow under UV

Haha, no worries, I tried almost all my stones, only one sapphire and garnet have fluorescence, all others aren't showing any. I did buy that light from ebay, oh well. It is still fun for me ;)

Not TL so you'll have to do with me. :cheeky:

Tsavorites are coloured by either vanadium or chromium. Those with Cr will fluorescence and those with vanadium will not.

Like Chrono indicated, some tsavorites (or green grossulars), will fluoresce and some will not.

Catmon, I don't know why either. but your sapphire ring looks beautiful!

UV lights ! - one of my favorite things ! I have three - 365 nM, 395 nM and I don't know the strength right now on the other. I've heard different opinions on which strength is best - so if anyone wants to comment . . .

Blue sapphires with chromium fluoresce red.

Thanks so much for the fun photos !!

Very nice of you!

I seached wikipedia, "Trace amounts of other elements such as iron, titanium, chromium, copper or magnesium can give corundum blue, yellow, pink, purple, orange or greenish color. Chromium impurities in corundum yield a red tint, and the resultant gemstone is called a ruby." Found it interesting that chromium exist in sapphire, but not strong enough to turn it into a ruby, maybe that's where the violet blue color come from? :naughty:
