I have a stone that was graded by GIA prior to a recut by BGD. I am curious if it would be likely to grade differently color &/or clarity wise after the recut. Is a recut likely to make a difference?

Yes, there's a decent change it will. I had a stone go from near the end of the alphabet to an N when Brian took it from a .99 'cut like a truck' to a .80 AGS0.

Wow... was the original grade from GIA??

This seems quite extreme, particularly for the relatively small size difference, and especially as the differences between grades in the lower alphabet are so big.

For pink and blue stones the grader compares the amount of color to the amount of color in the G master and if there is an equal amount or more it will be given a fancy color grade.

So - would this be an accurate summary? The grader compares the "strength of pink body colour" in the stone being graded to the "strength of yellow body colour" in the G master and thereby determines whether or not that pink is colourless or merits a Fancy grade (faint, etc.).

Please correct my understanding if it is incorrect... It seems like it's difficult enough to assign a diamond with yellow body colour a single letter grade, I can't imagine trying to compare "amount of colour" between two different colours like yellow and pink! It really must take a long time to gain this sort of expertise with grading colour.

No, it wasn't graded by any decent lab, but the color was that obvious.

:appl: Great! Now I have a new visual aid to help my granddaughters learn their alphabet! (As it is I'm already introducing them to all kinds of jewellery. My son is not amused! :naughty: )
