Ladies, if you were graduating from college...

I think something practical would be best. Does she need a smart purse or handbag that would look good with a suit? Nice pots or pans? A fancy coffee maker?

For me, I survived on coffee through out college (and afterward - come to think, I still do). I was convinced not to put a really nice coffee maker on my wedding registry. I finally got one this past Christmas. I love it. It's my baby.

In college I didn't have many nice things. I had roommates and I was always broke. After college I moved into a real flat with my own room and a real living room, kitchen, and dining area. My friends started getting engaged and having people over to my place was very exciting to me. In college all my kitchen items were individual sized to save on space. With my first place after college I had space for friends and loved showing off my skills in the kitchen. Even if my skills were only having a coffee maker that actually served more than one person or six matching wine glasses.

man, you guys are all super nice/lucky! i didn''t even get a card when i graduated from undergrad!

is there anything that would be trade related that she might need? perhaps you can engrave a tooth pick? just kidding....but only kind of. when my sister started med school she needed to buy a lot of things that were trade related: i bet that orthodontics is similar.

i think that jewelry might be your best bet, with the exception of a nice big fancy tote bag IF she is into that sort of thing. it totally depends on the kind of girls she is. if she is into brand names then i think that a fancy bag or tiffany''s jewelry would be great. maybe a nice laptop bag if she doesn''t have one? i would hold off on anything like a portfolio because she probably wouldn''t get a chance to use it for another few years when she is done.

A pair of pearl earrings and some cash to go with it?

Very sweet of you, Ellen.

The only graduation gift I got I chose myself, which was my fay cullen sapphire/diamond band.

I love the Tiffany silver necklaces that everyone else has been suggesting. I own the Elsa Peretti "M" and the eternal circle. I just love both. Someday I will get the zodiac pendant.

Elmorton's suggestion of a business-like tote is a VERY good one. I would definitely have appreciated that! I'm still carrying a purse and separate folio.

This is a little more... rustic? antiquey?... but I love these two personalized charms from Intuition:
Pagliei Square Charm Necklace
Pagliei Round Charm Necklace

Probably not as 'classic' as the Tiffany pieces, though!

Ellen I got them this.

It is MUCH prettier in person.
I was there when she bought them, and they were really pretty! I went back the next time and bought my daughter the open heart pendant for her 21st birthday.

I totally think something from Tiffany is perfect for someone on their way to dental school. I would not give her money because as you said, she probably doesn''t need that. She''ll always remember the Tiffany item you give her, though.

I think a Tiffany necklace would be perfect. Did you see the horseshoe pendant?

I think a Tiffany silver piece as well.
You are a most thoughtful and sweet aunt!

Money is one size fits all but if you want to give her something, I think a gorgeous pen or a piece of jewelry is lovely. A nice travel case for her toiletries or a travel bag, with her initials on it, would also be nice.

I started collecting nice pens not long ago and I have some gorgeous ones. I also love nice stationery and love to write notes. So the pens make it fun.

What a sweet Aunt you are.

Something from Tiffany would definitely be a great classic piece. I''m not sure of your niece''s taste, but I seem to remember you saying she''s a little funky (in a good way!), so etsy would be a good place to look for more unique pieces.

Tough one. How about a picture of her on graduation day in an engraved silver frame?

how about a personalized lab coat that she can use when she begins her practice. i assume that she will be required to wear something like the rest of her classmates while "working" while in school. a nice leather filofax in a pretty color would be nice to go with it. you may be able to get that embossed with her name?

HI:

I was thinkin the same thing.......

It is probably a little out there but what about a cute little silver tooth charm on a necklace to comemerate what profession she is graduating/studing further into.

What about a nice weekend of pampering to help her relax and get over the stress of exams. A nice massage, facial, manicure/pedicure. A really excellent stress reliver is an indian head massage, to work on the shoulders, neck and head. You leave with greasy hair due to all the essential oils but it feels magic!!

Other than that, money, cos then she can do what she wants with it and if others are giving her dosh, she can put it all towards something bigger.

*sigh*.......I could really go for a nice facial right now instead of being in work *humph*.

More great suggestions, thanks all!

FG and Sharon, great suggestion, except I gave her pearl earrings for her 16th bday! Which she told me she wears all the time, so at least it really WAS a good idea.

musey, I like those a lot. The only thing that makes me leary is they are not returnable....so if for whatever reason they needed to go back, that would be a problem.

Heidi, I did see the horeshoe, and thought about it for good luck!

laine, good memory lady! Yes, she has her "girly" side, and then her somewhat "earthy/hippy" side. That's why the more unique pieces were interesting me at Tiff's. And I will check out that site!

Now, I've been thinking some more. Should I get her something else now, and leave the Tiffany piece for when she's totally done? or just get the Tiff piece now and worry about what to get her next later? Time is partially a factor here also, her mother just sent the party invitation, and it's a week from Sunday!

Thank you for the sweet comments. I love being an aunt, especially to the girls, since I never had any of my own. And since I have no blood nieces or nephews, these kids are it. All 20 of them.

And I'm really sad to hear some of you didn't get anything for graduation. That's such an achievement, it should surely be recognized.

I also like the idea of something silver from tiffany, I''m not sure if anyone has suggested it, but I have the Tiffany Lock Charm Letter "A" (my initial) I originally bought it to replace a lost charm on a charm bracelet I have had since I was a very young girl, but have enjoyed wearing it as a pendant just on one of their silver chains.

Otherwise, I think there are lots of nice options in their silver jewelry range (many already suggested!) and think most/many young women love them!

HI:

I bought the Elsa Peretti "bean" in S/S as a grad gift from Tiffany''s--and it was a hit. Can never go wrong with those pieces that come in a little blue bag.....

cheers--Sharon

I like the bean too. But do you think I should hold out on Tiff''s for the last "big" hurrah? What would I get her later that won''t pale in comparison? You know what I mean?

I love the tiffanys necklace idea. Another idea would be a nice leather handbag from banana republic or something like that. I''m not sure of her style though, so I wouldn''t go this route unless you knew she would like the handbag style.

If she has support from her parents and lots of gifts coming like you said, then a classic tiffany piece is an excellent idea!

I graduated from college almost 4 years ago and went straight on to grad school. The BEST gift I got was a set of sturdy copper bottomed pots and pans from my grandmother. I use them and abuse them, but they''re still going strong! I doubt I will have to get a new set when I get married.

A sterling tiffany initial necklace is a nice idea. When i graduated high scool i recieved a very basic cobra link gold chain. Its something i still wear often.Im glad i didnt go for the class ring or anything with a date engraved on it.

I love the Tiffany bean necklace too!

I graduated college about 4 years ago myself, and I cherish the pair of earrings I was given. I think classic, non-trendy jewelry is always a go because you can wear it forever. I know you are concerned about holding off on Tiffany''s until she finishes with her graduate school, but I dunno...I also recently finished graduate school, and honestly to me college graduation seemed to be a much bigger deal than graduate school graduation (I suppose because I spent MUCH less time in grad school than college).

Even so, if you are unsure about jewelry, you could always go for an awesome handbag. My sister graduated recently, and my DH and I got her a super nice purse that I remembered her fawning over on a shopping trip. She loved that. Of course the only problem with it is that she will get limited use out of it before it is outdated (even though the shape and color are such that I think she can wear it for at least a few years before then)

I get what you mean about "topping" the Tiff''s gift. Hmm...is it possible to get her a pair of earrings now and a necklace that matches for her next graduation? Another part of a set would be a great gift for the next graduation.

Or you could give her one earring now and the other earring when she''s done with ortho school!

Oh, I would have absolutely LOVED to receive something from Tiffany''s when I graduated. I got a gorgeous YG charm bracelet from my parents with two charms, and a beautiful handmade quilt from my mother to commemorate my graduation. But that was in 2000, and there wasn''t a Tiffany store in my parents'' area.

I like the Tiffany sterling jewelry ideas. HOWEVER, Tiffany''s also has beautiful keepsake items such as bookmarks, pens, etc., that a young woman might appreciate just as much as jewelry. I gave my MOH a bamboo patterned sterling bookmark as her gift, she really loves it and has used it so much because she''s an avid reader. It was $100 back in 2003, I don''t know what they have this year along those lines within your budget but I would check out the "gift" section. They have a lovely purse pen in Tiffany blue that I think was around $75 last year...etc.

Sounds like you have decided to get something sentimental, then, but maybe not from Tiff''s since she will be graduating again with another degree in the near future?

My aunt (the mother of my godson) got me THE best sentimental gift when I graduated with my bachelor''s degree. It''s a book by Sandra Boynton called "Yay, You! Moving Out, Moving Up, Moving On" and it is SO beautiful and funny and full of pride and encouragement and love that it makes me tear up everytime I read it. I LOVE it.

Only about $10 on Amazon. Would make a great addition to any gift you might have planned. (Sorry I can''t do the direct link!)

If your neice is more earthy/hippy, do you think she''d like something Tiffany "brand" or would she prefer something more unique/ non-label brand? Maybe its just my area, but I see tons of young girls wearing silver Tiffany pieces, so someone who is more individualistic (as it sounds like your niece may be) might perfer something different from the crowd. You know your niece best, so I would just try to think about her overall style and go from there.

Having said that, I think Elmorton''s idea of buying her some more professional "big girl" clothes from Ann Taylor is a great idea- some cute skirts and tops or a fun spring overcoat! It''s just a way for her to feel "older" than undergrad even though she is still in school. Also, fun but "adult" things for her apartment are always good, such as a nice set of wine glasses or a pretty glass vase... things that she will be able to keep forever and remember you by (unlike pots and pans which get worn out). Someone also mentioned a massage/spa day, which I personally would LOVE (esp just after exam time!)

Finally, one of my favorite college graduation gifts was a George Foreman grill. Maybe not so sentimental, but boy did I get a lot of use out of it!!

Good luck making a decision!

I was actually about to post the same thing, havernell. I see the Tiffany silver on so many teens these days! But I think if you can find a more "unique" piece there it still may work. I am graduating from med school in less than two weeks (eeeeeek) and am getting earrings from my parents and hubby. I''d love a special necklace from a close relative. Hmm, other ideas... it''s tough if she''s already well taken care of by her parents. I do like the Tiff''s pen idea that someone else mentioned. Or a really cool, artsy piece for her new apartment? I would love a gift like that!
