Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand)?

Re: Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand

A friend of mine has a 4 ct emerald cut diamond with baguettes - it's honestly so gorgeous in real life!!!

Re: Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand

Several years ago I worked with someone whose best friend had just gotten engaged to a (much older) gazillionaire. She got a 12.5 ct pear solitare. TWELVE . POINT . FIVE. :o

When her friend came to our office, we were all ooohing and ahhhing over it and she looked at me, gave me a big smile and said "wanna try it on??" Well, how was I going to say no to that??

Needless to say, I never forgot it.

PS. They divorced 5 years ago. But she still has that rock to keep her warm, I guess :cheeky:

I remember cruising old posts on SMTB some time ago and I found one where a lady was at a realllly high end store trying to figure out which sized stone she wanted to upgrade to and posted all of the pictures of her choices - they were amazing. I can't find it now. I remember she talked about wearing her fur coat so she was treated with respect. Anyone remember that one?

Yup. That's Diamanteblu. One of the yummiest threads on PS.

Re: Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand

Here in Orange County I regularly see 5, 6, 7, 8, 9+ ct round & emerald cuts. Usually on older ladies.

Re: Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand

I've seen a few of DiamanteBlu's pieces in person and they're stunning.

Re: Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand

5 carat old mine brilliant cut worn by a client whose IT needs I service. IT IS BEAUTIFUL!

OMG! Get some pictures! PLEASE!!!

I live in a small town in South Africa and I usually only see about a quarter of a carat. The biggest I've seen here is a third of a carat. People sometimes fawn over my e-ring because by comparison it's large - it's actually half a carat.

I need to move to a real city where people wear big diamonds!

Re: Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand

I once tried on 20 carat emerald cut - beautiful stone, hideous price. The biggest one I've seen on someone else was a 10 carat pear in a restaurant.

Re: Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand

My DH's "surrogate" Mom (she took him under her wing when his own parents passed when he was in his early 20s)...has a 10 ct. pear....she also has large hands so I don't think it looks that big...I would have guessed about 6ct....either way, it's lovely, though it would be way too much for me!

I knew a woman that had a five carat round stone. My guess is that the color was in the IJK color range but it was very clear. It was in a six prong plain setting with a matching plain wedding band. In all honesty, it was not pretty. It looked too big as a plain round stone - if I had something that large, I too would prefer a fancy shape I think. It sort of looked like a doorknob on her hand - just sort of large and sitting there. I had always thought the bigger the better until I saw that ring. No flash and razzle dazzle somehow - just a big plain circle!

I totally agree-the giant RB I saw looked exactly the same! Now an emerald cut that big... I LOVE diamondfan's ring.

Re: Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand

My former boss had an rb that was probably about 4-5 carats (4 1/2 maybe? I always wanted to ask but didn't want to be rude!) it was also the sparkliest diamond I've ever seen in person, whenever I was in a meeting with her I'd find myself staring.

ME TOO and they definitely stand in first place as the largest and most drool-worthy stones I've laid my hands on.

Re: Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand

A graduate school professor of mine wore a 3 carat RB. It was pretty much a doorknob solitaire, looked very well cut. She gesticulated a lot with her hands, so it was virtually impossible for me to NOT watch the ring. She also always had a manicure in some tone of red, usually blood red, which also drew attention to her teeny-tiny hands and big diamond. At the end of the semester, she invited the whole class to her house (mansion) and we had pizza and wine. Second marriage for her DH so I'm sure hers was bigger than his ex's. :cheeky:

Edited to add: I have tried on a 5 carat RB and it covered my size 5.25 finger. It was crazy.

Re: Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand

I see one diamond very regularly that's the exact same size as mine (3 1/2 ct). It's a round brilliant. Anyway. She works at an antique store down the street, and shops at my work all the time. Once I cleaned her ring for her, and the setting was TDF; two velvety deep blue sapphires, three stone tension setting in deep liquidy high carat yellow gold with this gypsy set marquise on the bottom of the shank and some deep, deep engraving around it. (Very interesting touch!)

I've also seen some pretty serious stones on older women, often residents of CA, that come through the antique mall. Mostly emerald cuts in the larger sizes (I'd guess over 5 cts, under 10). I've seen maybe a half dozen similar stones like that. No huge round brilliants, almost no cushions at all of any size. No larger princesses, though a couple quad-set illusion settings that faked being large princess cuts, lol. Pretty much every siginificantly large stone I've seen has been an emerald cut.

There's another woman who shops regularly who has a serious RB three stone ring- it's very, very white, and probably 3 cts as the center and 1 ct each for the side stones. She wears it and a TON of other jewelry, usually with tennies and sweats. She's probably 75 or so. Heck, by that age you should be able to do anything you want! If you want to go antiquing dripping with jewels and in your sweatpants, so be it.

Oh and once I saw one of the super awesome ornate Van Craeynest settings on someone at work. She was all excited that I knew the name of the jeweler who'd made her ring- she'd forgotten! It was absolutely gorgeous in person; the stone was probably a half carat.

That was a fun day. I love the ring that had a hinge. Hard to explain, but the shank opened and closed around your finger. Do you remember that one? Love it!

Re: Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand

I was a dinner party a couple of months ago and one of the guests had a 2.75-3ct size OEC, slightly warm, antique setting - pretty clearly inherited I think. Very lovely. I'm in Europe and other than that one, there are no diamonds around in my social scene, which includes successful business people. A few .30 to .50 cts in my partner's family. Generally people spend on their homes or on major foreign trips.

Re: Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand

I used to live and work in a very affluent town in NJ. The glitter was often very impressive. One in particular would catch my eye, every time. Had to be a 4 ct marquise, in a big, chunky yellow gold setting, worn with an equally big, chunky band ring. Still, I always wondered how she wore that around her small children without doing some damage.

Re: Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand

This is a very fun thread.
I have to say that I'm withthe majority of posters; for a ring, I also aesthetically prefer fancy cuts once diamonds are over a certain size.I don't like rounds over three carats. However, since nobody is going to give me a three carat diamond, it doesn't matter--I can't pick them out for those who are lucky enough to be in this position.

I really and truly love the large size emerald cuts. Once I was lucky enough to try on a three-stone with a three carat center in the jewelry store. It looked enormous on me (I don't have a lot of space between my knuckle and my palm and it covered that whole space up--I couldn't have gone any larger without covering up my knuckle). I like how clean emerald cuts look in those big sizes and am having fun look at Diamondfan's and Diamanteblu's beautiful rings. They definitely have the hands to wear them, too.

I'm trying to think what is the biggest I've ever seen in real life. I used to live in NY and work in midtown and I also spend a LOT of time at fundraisers and such with very wealthy people, and i was at college with same. However, none of them wear jewelry of any size at all and a lot of them just don't wear jewelry, period. they are the sort of old money that has a lot of rules about what you can and can't wear and also tend to be horsey or sporty. I was at a fundraiser about six months ago where the least that people were contributing to this cause was $10,000 and nobody had on anything. People that I know are married to multimillionaires many times over were only wearing plain gold bands. There is one lady who comes to reunions of my Ivy League college, who is Asian, who wears a round brilliant diamond that must be about 5 carats. She stands out very much with that on her hand. That must be the largest rock I have seen in person, I think. My NYC sisters-in-law, who are bankers and lawyers, have rings that are in the 1.25-1.75 carat range. No more. Those are the younger ones--the recently married. The older ones wear no more than 1 carat, but high clarity and high color. My SIL who is a doctor wears about 1/3 carat, which is lowset--I think because it is practical for her job.

IN the milieu where I live now (I just visit NY and New England), all of the large stones I see are marquise cut. And I am sure that the biggest one (ror the wealthy wives) is about 2 carats (which of course looks as big as 2.5 round). This is a 'flyover' country area and the few millionaires are self-madeand I think they get marquise because it LOOKSthe biggest for their $$$. They are used tothinking in terms of value, like that. The commonest size is about 1.5 carat. I often don't see good clarity and color on those. But they look very impressive here where .5 or .75 carat is what most women get when they are older, for their upgrades and you still see many women with the 80's YG solitaires, their originals which range from .10 to .33 carat in size.

The biggest rock I see on a weekly basis is the checkout counter lady at the grocery store. She has a marquise that must be 3 carats. It definitely looks real and not like QVC (I find that the smaller cubics are convincing but when they are like 2 or 3 carats, the fakeness stands out). People are usually surprised when people who aren't well off have large diamonds, but I know it happens. My grandmother worked as a maid and then a live in nurse when she was older but she had a bigger diamond than many if not most of the well-off ladies she worked for. She had been married to a lawyer when she was young (in the 1920's) and had a very beautiful and large OEC in an art deco filigree setting that she would never sell, even when times were bad. (She had some other great jewelry, too. A rose gold bracelet that she left to me, brooches with pearlsin gold, and quite a few other things). So your priorities can be different, you can have beautiful diamonds--and workin a checkout counter.

Anyway, that's the most for the bling I see in person.

Does it count, my mother met the Princess Mary, the Princesss Royal (the Countessof Harewood,if I remember correctly) once at a function the colonies where she was invited to (with her father who was a lawyer). This was Queen Elizabeth's aunt. So Mom (she was about eighteen at the time) saw not only giant diamonds but lots and lots of them. She said that the lady's chest, neck and arms were completely covered and they sparkled as if she were on fire in the candlelight and quite a few of the stones were as big as walnuts.(She also said that she never saw anyone who looked so bored and exhausted.)

Re: Largest diamond you've seen in person (on someone's hand

A 10 carat emerald cut... on MY hand... at Cartier's in SF when the sales staff generously allowed a group of us who were there as part of a PS GTG play with the goods.

Other than that, it was a 5 carat light pink pear-shaped diamond worn by a woman in the medical imaging waiting room with me. I admired it and we chatted so I got to see it close-up. Apparently she and her hubby just enjoy spending their discretionary income on jewelry for her, and she was telling me all about it when - unfortunately - her turn came up!
