Laser inscription on all GIA diamonds?

Hi guys,

I don''t know if this question was asked before but would anyone please tell me if there is laser inscription on ALL GIA-certified diamonds or only on certain ones? If I buy one without laser inscription, how do I know if it''s the real one?

There is not a laser inscription on all GIA certed diamonds. You need to ask specifically or have this done yourself. If you work with a reputable vendor, there really isn''t a need for it, especially if your stone has inclusions,a specific cut/facet pattern, or flouro that you can notice yourself for ID purposes.

Once set, it''s often hard to find anyway, so it might just be easier to learn your inclusions (assuming you have some).

An independent appraiser can also assess whether it''s the certed stone or not too, so if you''re worried about getting what you''re paying for, that might be a good route to go.

fake GIA, too hard to pull off.

real stone that doesn't match...well, mistakes happen. the way vendors have Sarins and Ideal Scopes and send out tool kits of H&A viewers, loupes, IS, I guess even if two stones got mixed up and you didn't notice, you got something rather comparable, anyway.

All diamonds submitted for the GIA Diamond Dossier report are inscribed since it does not have a plotting diagram.

This report has been a popular choice for small diamonds since it's cost-effective. As of June 1 GIA will be expanding the carat weight range of diamonds that may be submitted for Diamond Dossier service and restructuring the fees. Now diamonds from 0.15 all the way up to 1.99 cts will be allowed.

Thanks for all the replies. I really appreciate your inputs. Because I''m considering buying a stone from a ring designer guy (not a diamond vendor), I feel safer if the diamond has laser inscription on it. If not, do you think an appraisal is neccessary? He has the original GIA certificate but I still feel a little bit unsure. Do you think it''s safe at all to buy it from him or should I go to a reputable vendor? Also, can you tell me if the price is reasonable:

Round cut, 1.51 carat, F color, Internally flawless, Polish: very good, Symmetry: good, Fluorescene: none. Price: $18,500

Whoa! F IF!!! But you''ll need to give us more information from the cert than that. We need the diameter, crown and pavilion angles, etc. to determine if the cut is any good. Good on the symmetry score is not a good sign, though. I''d much rather have an F VS that was ideal cut than an F IF that is an average cut.
