Great job Leonid!!! I must say you look very dapper in that tie. I loved seeing the pictures of everyone and hearing about the discussions and lectures. Very interesting, and I look forward to hearing more!! Hopefully we will be able to read a copy of your transcript.

This thread is a little out of context because it moved on to AGS
If any wise people think it is better to run a new AGS Cut grade thread then please do

Here is the first paragraph:
New AGS Cut Grading System

By Peter Yantzer, Jim Caudill and Diane Flora Posted: 6/1/2005 12:09 PM

In keeping with its mission to protect the consumer and maintain the highest industry standards, the American Gem Society (AGS) has developed a new methodology that analyzes the performance of a three-dimensional image of a faceted diamond. Thanks to generous grants from Jeweler’s Circular Keystone magazine, the AGS — working closely with Dr. Jose Sasian at the University of Arizona in Tucson — has been studying diamond cut for the past five years. During that time, outside experts on the subject have periodically reviewed the research progress. Using new technology and tools, the current research evaluated the optical effects of all the facets. The previous proportion set–based grading system for the standard round brilliant cut only addressed averages of the table diameter percentage, the eight crown main facets and eight pavilion main facets, therefore, it was two-dimensional in nature. The new three-dimensional system incorporates not only the light return of the stone, but also the interaction of human observation of the stone. It is a universal methodology applicable to all shapes.

If you want more - there is a GIA article explaining why (in GIA''s opinion) 8* and ACA new line are possibly going to get lower grades in their new system. Politics?

Leonid:

Thanks for taking the time, and the heat, to help educate the retailers. This will pay off bigtime.

A week ago I walked by an independent mall jeweler and briefly chatted with the sales lady. She wanted to know what I had learned on the internet and how she could help me select a diamond.

Since I am not currently in the market, I begged off. But I do note that this was one of the most pleasant receptions I have had from a jewelry store on the subject of the internet.

RE: During questions, one audience member charged that Pricescope capitalizes on the trust that has been earned and nurtured by retailers and uses that trust to undercut retailers. About half the crowd applauded the remark.
----------------------------

I spoke briefly with the questioner he is a friend of mine and I wanted to say hello.

I did not discuss the issue with him, he had plenty of fellow belivers with him and I had no time for a protracted argument as we were all leaving to have a lunch together with Leonid and his wife, Gary, Paul, Gary and several others with whom the luncheon dialect was charged and excited as we discussed nuances of cut and me not yet knowing the treat I was to receive that afternoon at AGS. Oh my gosh!

What I would have discussed had the opportunity been given is that trust given and nurtured by retailers sounds nice, but that in a survey taken more than ten years ago jewelers were lumped just above used car salesmen in their level of trust with the public.

Because of the two way nature of the internet and the ability to nurture individual clients in ways unheard of ten years ago we now have the ability to instill, cultivate and enhance trust in ways never before possible. AGS is going out of their way to make their research and findings TRANSPARENT to both the jewelers and the public so that we can make the issues involved in buying a diamond similarly transparent. This will allow our clientele to buy in confidence and perhaps establish some of the trust we are accused of undermining.

I now do more than half my business on line, but still enjoy a lively retail B&M trade that brings me great satisfaction. I think that more and more retailers are going to "get it" in the future and that I will become more the norm than the exception. Personally I am greatful to Leonid and his lovely wifefor the opportunity they have given me.

I think Wink is basically right. There are few traditionall jewelry stores willing to invest the hours it takes to educate someone on the various issues with diamonds. Yet the tutorials on the better web sites can provide that level of education - and forums like this provide inumerable benifits about little details (like how to clean a diamond, ect).

Anyone who follows the forum will find that some vendors are investing a lot of time into education all - which actually provides a very nice customer base.

Who are you going to buy from. Some sales person who obviously knows less than anyone who has spent some hours learning about issues on the internet - or someone who is willing to freely share their knowledge and is not offended at all by someone who has educated themselves.

If I had a jewelry store - I would have a small room where I provided diamond education classes for people. It could contain a bunch of self study material and displays that you could direct a person into to get started if the sales reps were busy.
