Lever-back earrings

As requested, attached are photos of three pairs of my earrings. The stones are demantoid garnets, spessartite garnets and moonstones...three stones I happen to like and that we also have in pendants. I retired 18 months ago, and have worn earrings about three times since. I have problems with studs and I didn't want diamonds added, so the style is unadorned. The moonstones were originally studs and were purchased online about 10 years ago. The spessartites came as a pair and the demantoids were chosen for closeness of color and carat weight. They are both pears, but one is a slightly different. I don't claim that any of the stones we have are perfect...just that they are good representations of their species. In some of our pendants, in fact, several shades of the gem color are represented, rather than having all of them of the "ideal" color.

They are all pretty! I really like the pears. I cant wear studs anymore either and need some alternatives. I was thinking hoops with dangles.

Thanks for sharing photos. I very much like the moonstones as I love the round cabochons and they look almost like drops of water (particularly the one on the right without the inclusion).

Hoops with dangles would be pretty...and I like hoops a lot. Unfortunately, I have very bad luck with them. I've never (knock wood) lost a lever back, but I have lost one of at least four different pairs of hoops. They seem to come off very easily, no matter how they are fastened. If you do decide to do some hoops with dangles, I'd love to see them.

Glad you liked the photos. I love moonstones. We we have a pendant with four Sri Lankan transparent blue moonstones and a single stone pendant with a green moonstone. Moonstones may not be the most valuable of gems, but they can be incredible stones.

I love the green pears and the moonstones. They are wonderful for daily wear. I hope you will wear them and enjoy them more often!

I am a bit curious, what problems do you run into with studs? The only annoying problem that I have found so far is, I have to take them off before nap or sleep because otherwise the posts will poke in my head.

I've had them go all the way through my earlobe! And at least for me, they are easier to lose. So far, the lever-back mounting makes them easier to put on and take off and they are not as easily pulled off.

OMG!! Now I am thinking of getting my next pair with lever-backs..

Ooooh I love those demantoids! Do you know their carat weight, or approximate size? A pair of demantoid earrings is on my "dream list."

That's why I only wear small and lightweight earrings - the heavy ones tend to overstretch the ear holes and it's not a pretty sight. I like the versatility of leverbacks. They can be both dressy and simple at the same time. I have a particular fondness for moonstones and am happy to see a pair posted here.

I love the moonstones - they are such an interesting stone - love the depth in the stones and how they shift with the light. Enjoy!

Oddly enough...i didn't feel the stud go all the way through..just noticed it wasn't there anymore.

The "demi" earrings are approx 1.5 carats each...3 carats all together. They were bought at different times...not as a pair.

I am curious about the actual lever back but cannot see it in the pictures. Best regards, Lee

Hi!

You asked to see a photo of what the lever-backs actually look like. Here's a side view of the Spessartite garnets.

Hi Leslie,
Thanks a bunch for showing me!
Lever back styles have been one of the focuses of our conversations lately at the shop so I am picking up info on them as much as I can. I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Does this style stay in its ideal position when you wear them or is there a tendency to angle downwards? Is there a small strip inside that provides the 'snap' when pushed closed? Does that strip look like gold too or perhaps a spring steel?
Thanks again for the picture and have a great day, Lee

These are lovely Mazeltov2! I really really like the garnets

Hi Lee,

By way of answering your questions, I've attached a few more pix of the mountings in vaious positions, so you can see how they work. For the most part they seem to stay in the correct position when being worn. Occasionally, throughout the course of a day, if I find that they have slipped forward, it's easy to make the slight necessary adjustment. As for the mechanism itself...all of my lever-backs are made ONLY of gold, white or yellow. I think you can see that more clearly in these new photos. I have yet to lose one of them, and that's my main reason for choosing that style. The fact that they go all the way through the ear and "latch"makes them feel much more secure. They can also be made tighter by pinching them slightly. No backs to worry about losing, and they are much more comfortable.

If you have any other questions, I'll try to answer them. Thanks for writing. :)

Hi!

Glad you like the Spess earrings...I do too. We also have two pendants of Spessartite Garnets. Each has three fairly large stones. If you'd like to see them, I'll post the photos. It's fun to wear the pendants and earrings, and have people ask me to identify the stones. Orange doesn't seem to be the most common color in gemstones. Most people think they are are Madeira citrines, but the stones in the pendants have all tested as garnets.

Have a good one! :wavey:

Hey, thanks again Leslie, that was helpful. Best regards, Lee

You're very welcome :D

I often see the stones tilted downwards on leverbacks, more so with larger heavier stones. I prefer the interchangeable style of leverback where the stone swings freely - the jump hoop can be angled in such a fashion where the stone's crown will always be facing level with the viewer's eye when worn.

Interesting there is an interchangeable style, got a pic by chance?
I have been adding a short piece of chain for the stone to dangle on in order to help keep the stones facing the correct direction. Gravity can be a friend or a foe. Best regards, Lee

Thank you Chrono, very informative. Good designs to work with. Best regards, Lee
