I had gotten this london blue topaz pear cabochon at a gem show last month. I didn't know what I wanted to do with it, but when I walked into jewelry class on Saturday with no projects in progress, it quickly became a ring.

It's not done quite yet - there's a lot of angry firescale on the band so it needs to be sanded down and repolished, and the stone wiggles in the bezel so I need to work on that more. I also might file down the backing so it's more under the twist, but I haven't quite decided on that yet. You can really see the firescale in the pictures - see how the edges of the ring band are whiter and shinier than the middle, that has a darker purplish tint? Gross! It all needs to be bright and shiny!

I was originally just going to leave an edge of the backing sticking out beyond the bezel, but I had all this skinny wire that I never know what to do with and so it became a twisted halo. Since I know you PSers will all be looking for the flaws, I will tell you right now two biggies: at 5 o'clock is where the two ends of the twisted wire meet up, and there's a weird little divot; and where the bezel is soldered together, I accidentally melted that solder a little more when I soldered it to the backing, so you can see the gap between the two edges.

I am pretty sure I picked this stone to work with the other day because it matched my nail polish.

nice, especially for something you hadn't planned on doing....

Wow, very cool ring!

Thanks! I know this isn't the usual kind of post around here, but I'm a full-time college student and don't have the budget to get fancy settings... but what I do have is a ton of silver and jewelry supplies that I inherited. So if I want pretty gemstone rings, I have to make them. This is just the third time I've bezel set a stone and I've improved greatly from the first two times. The first time was so, so terrible - everyone else in the class finished in 6 hours and it took me over 25, and looked super-awkward, and I just avoided making anything with stones for the next year, until I got sucked into Pricescope and started buying more gemstones.

I like it a lot-very pretty! And it looks great with your nail polish!

Very cool, great job!!!
