Hello everyone. I have been a long time lurker of this site and it has helped me tremendously over the last year. I realize this question has been asked dozens of times; but I'm hoping for some tailored replies.

After planning a vacation for early Feb to Vieques & Culebra (islands Off the coast of Puerto Rico), I thought to myself; I don't think there would be a better opportunity than now to ask.

I have spent a lot of time on Blue Nile. Below is the setting I am leaning toward in Platinum. What is everyones thought about Kay Jewelers or Zales? Or any other local places?

http://www.bluenile.com/build-your-own-diamond-ring?forceStep=STYLE_STEP&offer_id=17374

Ok now. My budget is around $10,000 for everything; Diamond, Setting, and band. The setting and band will run me about $2800; leaving me a little over $7,000 for the diamond.

Here is some info: She is very petite; 5'2 and around 95 pounds. So I'm honestly thinking anything bigger than 1-1.25 carats may look a little out of place. I know people say bigger is better, but tell me what you guys think! Basically I am looking for something that looks brilliant and sparkles like no other and to achieve this I'm thinking a ROUND, IDEAL cut. As for color, clarity and size thats up in the air. I'm not looking to go crazy. I'm not looking for something that needs to be magnified 10x in order to appreciate its beauty. As long as it looks good to the naked eye; then I'm happy with it. Help me buy that diamond :)

Everyone input is greatly appreciate and thank you in advance!

Re: Long time lurker: Time to pick out the diamond - Help :

as for the size, no a 1- 1.25 ct stone will not look out of place on a small finger. larger, but not out of place.

here is a good reference someone just posted
https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/my-1-25-ct-1-57cttw-platinum-e-ring-w-3-rows-micropave.183989/
doesnt look too big at all.

also i wouldnt buy her the wedding band. she might want to pick that out herself, some girls like matchy- some dont.

As for that band you could find something similar a lot of places, so i wouldnt go to BN as my first choice. You want to pick from a vendor that will provide you with idealscope images, let you know its eye clean if its a lower SI clarity, and provide you with actual pics

Brian gavin has a nice millgrained one (that jagged part of the sides)

James allen has all sorts of settings, and will millgrain any of them for free
i always like this one

if you like them i would put them on hold! you can hold up to three

Re: Long time lurker: Time to pick out the diamond - Help :

nielseel thanks for the reply. The other thread of the 1.25 carat on the ladies hand really opened my eyes. It does look awesome and not out of place in the least.

I would prefer to buy the diamond and setting from the same site that way they can put it all together for me.

The Brian Gavin Engraved Cathedral is exactly what I'm looking for. Side stones showing from above and the sides are engraved.

Any other diamonds from that site that you recommend?

Thanks again.

i like the I one i posted if you could swing it,
www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/1.150-I-VS2-Round-Diamond-AGS-BL-104062571011

also these are nice, really any BG signature or blue on that site would be perfect, as long as its eye clean. Its just a matter of what color you are comfortable with

ETA i love that setting but i do say wait on buying the band. She might want one with diamonds, she might want one thats engraved. I mean a few different bands could go with that setting. Plus she gets the fun of shopping and trying them on

That setting is gorgeous - I don't think I've seen it before, awesome detail work.

The stone nielseel is lovely, here are a couple of others that will squeak in under the budget amount that look nice as well. I really love the blues, they're something special. If fluoro isn't your thing though, there's one here that is a normal BG Signature.

Re: Long time lurker: Time to pick out the diamond - Help :

Update:

I have reserved the follow diamond suggested by nielseel.

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/1.150-i-vs2-round-diamond-ags-bl-104062571011#!prettyPhoto[gallery2]/2/

I have narrowed down my setting choices to the following (Although i'm very much leaning toward the first one; Sleek Micro Pave):

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/pave-and-side-stones/4-prong-sleek-micro-pave-18k-white-gold-5472w18

or

I plan to spend half the day tomorrow looking at some other diamond possibilities before pulling the trigger and placing my order. Something about the Gavin Blues has me hooked. Any other diamond suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

THANKS to all who have contributed and making this much easier on me!!!!!

Re: Long time lurker: Time to pick out the diamond - Help :

The last time BGD got a shipment of BGD Blues was about a month ago. They seem to update their inventory every month, so they could be getting in a new shipment soon. Why don't you check with them to see if they have any more coming before you pull the trigger? Lesley and her staff at BGD are really nice, and if you're deciding between a couple of diamonds, she can ask Brian to look at them and tell you which one he thinks is the best.

Re: Long time lurker: Time to pick out the diamond - Help :

I like different things about both settings. Either would be great, its nice out the sleek one has the stone setting higher, itll look a little bigger. If you wanted that millgrained look I bet they would millgrian that for you :)

Re: Long time lurker: Time to pick out the diamond - Help :

So today I made the trip to Good Old Gold located in Long Island New York. They were very informative and allowed me to see the differences first hand.

They showed me this Hearts and Arrows 1.24, I, SL1, Ideal Cut.

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10141/

Any thoughts on this diamond? Decently priced? As I look at the AGS report, I'm a little worried at the imperfections.

Seeing the diamonds in person has allowed me to not only become for confused but realize I definitely want a 1.10 - 1.25 in size.

My setting is picked out. I have decided not to rush things and spend through Saturday deciding on the right diamond. Currently my top choice is the Brian Gavin Blue 1.15, I, VS2 , Ideal cut is my top choice:

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/1.150-I-VS2-Round-Diamond-AGS-BL-104062571011

Feel free to post any other diamonds out there that come to mind. Also if anyone knows any other trustworthy sellers located in New York that I could visit, please let know who. Someone mentioned the New York Diamond District... I'm just afraid I do not have enough knowledge for all the possible sharks that are in that area!

Thanks again. I'm getting closer!

Re: Long time lurker: Time to pick out the diamond - Help :

either are beautiful. I would buy the stone where you get the setting.

They have this setting for sure, since I looked at it in person.

They may have the one you listed, not sure. They are nice settings for sure.

I like that one too because it has a 6 prong head, but I thought it was over your budget... either one is gorgeous and it'll be easier to get the setting from GOG if that's where you end up getting the stone.
