Looking for a black diamond engagement ring

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the board, so nice to meet you all.

I want to pick up a really nice quality engagement ring for my girlfriend, but one condition - it has to be black.

I've searched the internet but haven't really found anything too nice. The most expensive ring came to about $3,000 USD, so I'm taking a stab that it's crap quality. I'd like to point out, if it's not already obvious, but I know absolutely Nothing about diamonds. I'm a watch guy myself, I know nothing about rings. I've seen Tiffany's TV commercials, that's about it LOL.

My budget is $50,000 - so if anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Wantooplay.

I assume from your post you're after a black diamond, rather than simply an ordinary colourless diamond in a black metal mount. Broadly speaking - black diamonds are probably the cheapest coloured diamonds available and are even cheaper than colourless.

Take a look here, for example: http://www.langerman-diamonds.com/shop/polished-black-diamonds.html or http://www.fancydiamonds.net/black_diamonds

If you want to spend up to $50k on one, you'll probably end up with something of an exceptionally large size. It would certainly be a statement piece. I'd imagine 95%+ of the people on this forum and on the planet would prefer to go for some other colour or colourless diamond with that sort of budget, for aesthetic reasons. Has your girlfriend specifically requested a black diamond or are you trying to buy something different as a surprise? If the former, then that's great; if the latter, it is a relatively risky tactic.

Agreed.

What has led you to deciding on a black diamond? If that's what she wants, perfect. If the words, "I want one of those" while she is pointing at a black diamond, and there are no other rings in sight that she could have been referencing, have not come out of her mouth, I would proceed with caution. I'm not sure I could find a single woman in my life who would want a black diamond as an engagement stone, and most certainly not for $50k.

That being said, if you KNOW your lady wants a black stone - here is a very good colored stone vendor (but please - look at all of the beautiful colors of the rainbow you can get for $50k! ): http://www.fancydiamonds.net/black_diamonds#.Uk0vF1P3NPw

You're going to have to work hard to spend $50k on a black diamond. They just aren't expensive (relatively speaking, of course).

Hi Wantooplay! :wavey:

Welcome to PS! I think black diamond engagement rings are a really cool and different option! (And I secretly dream of having one myself! ) Has your gf made it clear that this is what she wants? I personally love the style but not everyone does and this is something she'll wear for the rest of her life. Black diamonds can be found both natural and treated and there are other PSers wiser and more experienced than me who can help you with that. :)

All of the excellent PS vendors make beautiful rings and I'm sure anyone of them can make your ring vision come true! As pointed out in the previous posts you really have the budget to have anything done you want. Maybe we should start with the vision you have for the ring? What are you (and your gf) looking for? Solitaire? Three stone ring? Pave/sidestones? Halo ring? Try to find a pic with to give us an idea even if it's with a generic white diamond and tell what you want.

I know the OP stated has suggested that he wants to avoid something which is "crappy quality".

At the risk of sounding controversial, I think it's fair to say that a number of people would view black diamonds as "crappy quality" versions of their colourless (or other colour) counterparts. And that is generally why the price is lower on a per carat basis. I don't know so much about black diamonds, but I was under the imrpession that they effectively have that colour because they are totally included. In the same way that a flawless or near flawless (e.g. IF or VVS1) colourless stone might be worth $XX,000 amount and a colourless stone with worse clarity (SI2, I1 etc) will probably worth much less than the aforesaid amount. And once you start to look at totally black diamonds, they can be priced even lower than heavily included colourless diamonds.

If that is what someone has their heart set on, then fine (and they are still not exactly cheap, compared with other gemstones). But if you're keen to splurge several tens of thousands of $$ and don't want anything "crappy", I do slightly struggle to see how a black diamond fits the bill.

Could a beautiful grey diamond be an option too?
It would be a pity to spend so much money on a black diamond. I would almost suggest to buy an Onyx ring to determine whether your GF will not grow tired of it...

Leibish has an unbelievable dark fancy gray internally flawless pear that I have been drooling over for weeks. I would choose that way before I chose an actual black diamond, which generally has absolutely no sparkle and therefore absolutely no features that justify its price.

There are black diamonds and then there are black diamonds..

There's a thread over in colored stone forum that goes over some very interesting things about them. Like, for example, some believe they can from asteroids. How cool!!

However they are not as expensive as other colors. So I don't think you will actually be able to spend your budget! Which I rarely see here.

I truly can't wait to see what you get! The only thing I'll say is black metal is usually just black rhodium (or something) plated, and will have to be posted often

Leon mege has made cool black diamond rings ( Google Leon merge black diamond you'll see) Also o feel like solange might sell what you're looking for.

Also ALL black black? Just to throw it out there, you could make a stunning red colored stone and black diamond ring that would really blow peoples socks off.

Or how about a largish top quality white diamond in a black halo? I saw one of these ages ago and it was wickedly cool!!!!

The only thing I wanted to add is most black diamonds are treated and do not come with a GIA report.
You can get one that's naturally black with a GIA report to prove it, and they will be more expensive and perhaps arguably 'better quality' than a treated one.
Still, as mentioned, $50K will buy you one doorknob of a black diamond, if you can ever find it.

Cathy waterman makes some lovely and unique black diamond rings. I would imagine many of them are special order or custom but here is a sample

Also this is an example of some beautiful rose cut gray diamonds…personally I think Grey would be amazing...it is a bit softer but either way with that budget you're going to get an amazing ring.

I've also attached a pic of another cathy waterman ring...

You are in the wrong price range for a black diamond ring. They are viewed as "cheap" compared to other diamonds. I think they are fine for fashion rings, but you won't be needing $50k to buy a black diamond engagement ring. A fine blue sapphire would be a nice alternative if she doesn't like a white diamond center stone.

Highest priced one on ebay, 53 ct black diamond with 4 cts white diamonds in setting:

Another, 21 cts for $10k...

Monique péan makes some lovely stones I think would be right up her ally! You'd probably have to do custom work, but sounds like she does that.

Here's a few of her things. I really love the idea of those "grey" stones someone posted from first dibs.... they are still black looking but with more dimension and visual interest.

Here is what I'm afraid you'll end up with if you spend 50k

I looked into black diamond engagement rings. What I found was that the ones for $3,000 are enhanced diamonds. The black gold settings are plated and will need to be replated about every six months if worn daily.

Link, please? That sounds *amazing,* and, but, alas, navigating their site on a phone is, er, an adventure ....

But consider me a big ditto on this conceptually. Fancy greys are incredibly beautiful - the best of both worlds, with darkness, color, depth, AND fire. Black diamonds, even of the highest quality, tend to look opaque/solid to the naked eye.

I love this, and i wanna say try and find one for 30k instead of 15, but i wonder how easy those would even be to find...

This plus black diamond halo and black rhodium plating? delicious :lickout:

So buy her a $50k watch .. :wink2:

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the replies; I had no clue that black diamonds were looked down upon. I guess that's why they are so cheap LOL.

So I guess I have to figure something else out.

For the person that was asking if she asked for a black diamond, or if I was just taking stab at it: She asked for it. Says she loves them, they are unique, and no one else has them. She's always been one to go against the norm and trend.

That being said, I would rather buy her a candy sucker ring before I put something trashy/cheap on her hand. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I need to find a different color to go with.

Can anyone show photos of really nice unique engagement rings? I want it to be classy, but also something that is different than the normal Tiffany's ring that every woman has.

I like the square and princess cut diamonds, I also like the 3 square ones, or even 1 diamond stone + small diamonds on the band. I'm open to anything, just trying to figure out where and what to get her.

I've gone to a few stores and nothing has really appealed much to me.

Black diamonds are not inherently trashy, ugly, or lesser than stones of another color. It's just that a nice black diamond isn't going to eat up much of your budget. If she wants a black diamond, I see no reason not to buy her one just because they aren't expensive enough.

:appl: :appl: This!!!!!! :appl: :appl:

PSers generally "jump" at partners that knowingly go against their partners wishes. I do not see how this is any different!!!! If she loves black diamonds and has asked for one, I do not understand why you would not want to purchase the most beautiful you could find. Perhaps I'm missing something, I do not know

How much you spend isn't an indication of how much you love a person, right?!....well I hope most people believe this to be true.

I, personally  this:

I completely agree. If she truly loves a black diamond, then buy her the most stunning ring you can find. And... Save some money to buy a beautiful Christmas or birthday present as well (a watch? Black diamond earrings?). You can also save the money for a future upgrade.

You can have a top jeweller like Steven Kirsch or Victor Canera make a handforged ring for her and it will be stunning!!! The fact that most people do not prefer a black diamond did not stop her from asking for one. On the contrary!!!
She is not a classic Tiffany type of girl, so don't even go there. What kind of style does she have. Modern or 'classic with a twist'?
