Thanks for all the replies; I had no clue that black diamonds were looked down upon. I guess that's why they are so cheap LOL.
So I guess I have to figure something else out.
For the person that was asking if she asked for a black diamond, or if I was just taking stab at it: She asked for it. Says she loves them, they are unique, and no one else has them. She's always been one to go against the norm and trend.
That being said, I would rather buy her a candy sucker ring before I put something trashy/cheap on her hand. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I need to find a different color to go with.

There is no reason whatever why you shouldn't give your GF the black diamond ring she has asked you for. If you were thinking of getting your GF a black diamond as a surprise, not knowing how she would feel about it, we'd probably suggest that you re-think your strategy. But your GF knows she wants a black diamond, so why not get her what she wants? The fact that a black diamond would cost less than a comparably sized colorless stone merely means that you can get her a bigger stone, and that you have more to spend on a spectacular setting. It's all good!

+1.
It sounds like she thinks for herself as opposed to going with the crowd.
If she has a thick skin and is very self-confident she will not be bothered by negative comments.
If you feel she will be bothered then perhaps pick another color.
FCDs are very different from the common white diamond.
I think only Yellows have made inroads as engagement diamonds.
If you decide to get a Fancy colored diamond $50K will only get you a Fancy Red diamond of around 0.15 carat, but will get you a huge Yellow diamond.
Shopping FCDs is complex so take your time and learn much.
Do searches here on Rocky Talk and also on Pricescope's Colored Stones forum for FCD threads.
Here is a list of the hues in a VERY approximate ascending order of price for the pure unmodified hues.
If you search around the Internet you'll find many lists with different orders, but generally the hue positions are pretty much in there.
FCDs are rare so data is scarce, especially on the hues near the bottom of the list.
Black
Brown
Yellow
Gray
Chameleon - dark greens with modifying hues that change hue with light and temperature
Purple
Pink
Blue
Orange
Violet
Green
Red
Secondary modifying hues can increase or decrease the price compared with a stone of one pure hue.
Generally a modifier at the top of the list lowers the price and a modifier near the bottom of the list increases the price.

Can anyone show photos of really nice unique engagement rings? I want it to be classy, but also something that is different than the normal Tiffany's ring that every woman has.
I like the square and princess cut diamonds, I also like the 3 square ones, or even 1 diamond stone + small diamonds on the band. I'm open to anything, just trying to figure out where and what to get her.
I've gone to a few stores and nothing has really appealed much to me.

Black diamonds are not inherently trashy, ugly, or lesser than stones of another color. It's just that a nice black diamond isn't going to eat up much of your budget. If she wants a black diamond, I see no reason not to buy her one just because they aren't expensive enough.

PSers generally "jump" at partners that knowingly go against their partners wishes. I do not see how this is any different!!!! If she loves black diamonds and has asked for one, I do not understand why you would not want to purchase the most beautiful you could find. Perhaps I'm missing something, I do not know
How much you spend isn't an indication of how much you love a person, right?!....well I hope most people believe this to be true.
I, personallythis:
I completely agree. If she truly loves a black diamond, then buy her the most stunning ring you can find. And... Save some money to buy a beautiful Christmas or birthday present as well (a watch? Black diamond earrings?). You can also save the money for a future upgrade.
You can have a top jeweller like Steven Kirsch or Victor Canera make a handforged ring for her and it will be stunning!!! The fact that most people do not prefer a black diamond did not stop her from asking for one. On the contrary!!!
She is not a classic Tiffany type of girl, so don't even go there. What kind of style does she have. Modern or 'classic with a twist'?

The grey/smokey color with solid black halo sounds gorgeous and eye catching. Definitely unique! Visually the solid black color looks very heavy, so I would recommend a longer stone like an emerald or marquise shape if you go for that opacity.
Niel said:Oh how cool would a. Grey marquise diamond be with either a black halo and pave sides OE just a Blake lively style 3 row pave.
It would probably take a while to find a 45k dark grey marquise (like the IF pear posted). But if you could it would be a showstopper. And I DO think dark Frey with black pave counts as a black ring. And that way you get sparkle! And no one would say its trashy.

Mmmm so pretty. I really like the 2.26 radiant in particular. Then you'd get the edginess of black diamonds, but the center stone wouldn't have to be opaque.
