Looking for a black diamond engagement ring

I agree that as per some other threads, people have really been a little derogatory here. It's so unnecessary. :(

I completely understand wanting something different. There are so many similar styles out there these days that changing the centre stone/colouring may be the only way to get something a little quirky. We don't all want Blake Lively's style. Now her husband on the other hand... ;)

I just found this:

http://www.mkhordipour.com/estate/rings/engagement-rings/3ct-antique-emerald-cut-diamond-ring.html

Admittedly, not a black diamond but a stunner of a ring like the one posted above. I would keel over if my husband brought this home. Then I'd berate him and make him take it back (maybe in a day or two) because we ain't got that to spend on a ring. But if we did.... something like this would be a stunning choice. :D It's rock and roll and cool and edgy but still feminine.

Also, this is one HELL of a find. Love the cut and styling.

Why specifically black diamonds? There are other coloured diamonds that stand out as being different. They don't sparkle (it shows iridescence like a black pearl) and are not see-through which is another reason why black diamonds are not popular. Has she seen black diamonds in person? Is she open to other types of rarer and less commonly seen stones? There's alexandrite (colour changes from slightly bluish green to purplish red) and chrysoberyl (greenish yellow) which are hardly enough for 24/7 wear. Sapphires come in more than blue.

I only bring this up to make sure that she is aware that there are other options.

These are my questions as well. Other gems or similarly unique colors of diamonds -- like grey -- can be unique AND also have nicer optical properties in my opinion. Before you make any decisions, I would perhaps show her some of the photos in this thread, or else talk about some other gem options, to make sure she is making an informed choice.

Something that I think would be really fun and gorgeous would be to take one of these greyish diamonds and put it in a black diamond halo and plate the piece in black rhodium. Mmmm so pretty. I really like the 2.26 radiant in particular. Then you'd get the edginess of black diamonds, but the center stone wouldn't have to be opaque.

I. LOVE. THE. WAY. YOU. THINK.

::)

As soon as I thought of that, I immediately wanted one for myself. PS is dangerous to my wallet! :loopy:

Found some quirky styles from Catherine Angiel. She is apparantly based in New York. She also works with grey diamonds.

I have to say, I think black diamonds surrounded by white diamond halos look absolutely stunning.

The pear at the beginning of this thread and the halo just above look amazing. I agree wholeheartedly that this is a job for a designer like Leon Mege, Victor Canera, or Steven Kirsch.

The future fiancee said she "loves" black diamonds, so a black diamond she should have!

The information about untreated black diamonds being somewhat transparent and in reality a very, very dark brown (which I'm assuming looks black) is very intriguing. It sounds as if that's a whole different ballgame from the opaque, treated black diamonds.

Oh how cool would a. Grey marquise diamond be with either a black halo and pave sides OE just a Blake lively style 3 row pave.

It would probably take a while to find a 45k dark grey marquise (like the IF pear posted). But if you could it would be a showstopper. And I DO think dark grey with black pave counts as a black ring. And that way you get sparkle! And no one would say its trashy.

Yes! I was just thinking this (and got back onto the forum a little late)!! It would be different, and if done by a great bench... AH-MAZING! I don't know how anyone would question the beauty of this, whether they loved the idea as an ering or not!! I would most definitely want the sparkle factor of a gray or black diamond (otherwise, it would just be the same look as an onyx...) -- this is just my vision though. ;))

OP, some people are always gonna think their own opinions are the "right" ones, but if your GF loves this different look, there are many ways to up the class factor!! As long as she loves it, then it's AMAZING -- No. Questions. Asked. ;)) :praise:

Hi Op,(if you are still out there)

To me, it is obvious you want a ring that is amazing and shows that you spent the big bucks. I agree with the other poster that Carrie Bradshaws 5 ctw black diamond egagement ring,(Sex and The City) may be responsible for the popularity of black diamonds. I have a 2ctw black diamond with white trilliant ziron side stones. I enjoy wearing it and although it is an irradiated diamond, I nevertheless smile to myself each time i think I have a 2ctw diamond. I often wear it.

However, the ring does not have the monetary value of other diamonds. I have some other diamonds, both colorless and in colors.
If I could have a 2 ctw diamond in either of those categories I would be more thrilled than over my black diamond. So, I would suggest you get her two diamonds for her engagement, one black, (don't pay too much for this) and another of her choice. That is a great compromise. You get to spend your money on 2 diamonds. Who, among her friends can say my guy gave me two engagement rings.

Good Luck finding what you want.

I might be way off here but I'm guessing the lady might be a fan of SITC? Cary got an asscher cut diamond from finance #1 and then they became super popular. In movie 2 she got a black diamond from Mr. Big and I remember reading that die hard fans starting buying black diamonds...though the trend never caught on like the asscher (which was already on the rise).

Here are some settings I think would look fab with a dark gray/black diamond. They are for different cuts -- for variety. ;)) (I couldn't get the photos to load, so I had to do links...)

Sure! Another PS member wanted to PM me on there, but I can't find the message function! (I'm assuming LT is Loupe Troop, right??) :D

I feel like an idiot for not being able to do the LT message, but the only options I see are to the left to search and at the very bottom... HELP!

You have to click on that person's listening and then contact them via the listing.
