Looking for a purple sapphire for engagement ring

Looking forward to pictures today. :))

Well I got up early in the morning to go to work, just after sunrise, and decided to take the stone outside to see what it looked like now. Dude... it wasn't pink anymore! Just a perfect, rich, grape-violet color. Incredible.

Here are some pics I took yesterday afternoon inside and outside:

Needless to say, it looks much better under a better camera. ;) But it's a beautiful stone and I love it... we're hoping to find out some details today about getting it set :)

It is so gratifying when you find "the" stone, isn't it? I love that it surprised you in the sunlight - nothing like a moody stone to keep your interest! My one complaint about the studio lighting that so many vendors use is that it doesn't accurately reflect how our eyes will see the stone most of the time. Studio lighting is bright, perfectly diffused light, so that it lights up the whole stone and reality is often different. That is why its important to ask for extra pics like hand shots as you did. :))

And, um doh! I forgot to say congratulations! That is a big achievement finding the right person and a beautiful stone. Please continue this thread as you go through the design and setting process; we'd like to root for you the entire journey!

Congrats, it looks lovely!

Beautiful stone! What a mesmerizing colour.

I only knew to ask for those shots because y'all recommended them! :)

Thank you so much! It has been a long journey... we were best friends all through college, started dating at the very tail end of college, went through two long years of living in different time zones and seeing each other only once every month or two months, and then the long years of my grad school days. We'd always agreed that we didn't want to get married until we a) both had our lives figured out, career-wise, and b) we were living in the same place. It took us five years to finally achieve that, so I'm SUPER excited to get this show on the road!

SO - we went and talked to two jewelers today. The first was very nice but didn't have our desired setting (with the twin tapered baguettes on either side) in the store, so they're going to have someone draw up a rendering of it and we'll go back to see it. If we decide that we want it, they'll have to get it custom built.

The second had one setting that I really liked and that I had already seen online (http://www.shaneco.com/detail/three-stone-baguette-and-round-diamond-engagement-ring/41045851) and a second (http://www.shaneco.com/Catalog/MyBuiltItem.aspx?X=41048826&XS=1146892) which they didn't have in stock but can get shipped over from a sister store. Boyfriend and I had already talked about the pros and cons of white gold v. platinum (this jeweler doesn't work with palladium) and I was happy when he said he felt that we should get the platinum and that he was more than okay with the higher cost. We're going back sometime later this week to take a look at the other setting once they get it in.

Oh, I forgot to mention: the second jeweler had some purple sapphires in stock as well, which we decided to take a look at because, hey, we were there. The stone that was most similar to ours (granted slightly larger, and from what I could see probably a slightly better cut) was $2250  I'm really glad we saved on the stone and can put that money towards the platinum!

I'll end this long post with a picture of the little amethyst ring Boyfriend bought me for my 25th birthday. Can you tell I have a thing for purple stones? It's been very loved - but I can't say I'm not looking forward to the upgrade, either ;)

Boyfriend (and hopefully soon to be Fiance!) brought home the finished ring today. I was not allowed to see it or the box that it came in as he wants the actual proposal to be a surprise, but here's a picture of the setting we picked out. The stone is not set in this picture - just sitting on top :)

I thought all along that I just wanted a pair of tapered baguettes on the side, but then we saw this setting and we both fell in love with it. We ended up finishing under our proposed (no pun intended) budget, too!

I love that setting! In fact, I want that setting! I can only imagine how fabulous the ring must look. Can you tell SO that he should hurry up and propose because we want hand shots?

Thank you - for the compliment and your help along the way! :)

Nothing yet... Boyfriend keeps pretending to tie his shoe and then leap to his feet, cackling madly. We both like to joke around a lot with each other so I don't mind and I haven't fallen for it - at least not yet :p He wants it to be a surprise, so I think it will be a little while...

Stunning ring, I love it! And thanks for sharing your beautiful story.

Beautiful 5 stone ring; I do hope he'd hurry up for both your sake and ours.

It is a very pretty ring. Nice job.

Your ring is amazing. Congrats!!

Ahhhh!!!! We're engaged! Just in time for my 27th birthday :)

Pricescope community - thank you SO much for helping us find our perfect sapphire. It's been awhile since I've seen it (he's had it hidden away in some corner of our apartment for months) and every time I see the stone I'm more in love with it. It's a gorgeous deep magenta at night and in the early morning light, almost a blue-violet; and other time it's just a deep, luscious grape jelly color. A big shoutout too, to Jeff Davies who was super helpful and patient with sending us more and more photos and videos over several weeks!

Thanks to this experience I may or may not have gotten sucked into gem buying and purchased a couple of other stones without any kind of plan of what to do with them

Congratulations on your engagement! Your ring is beautiful and I love gems that shift colors throughout the day too!

Congrats! It's beautiful! And happy birthday! :)

Curious about what other stones you bought. Buying loose stones without a setting plan happens to a few of us around here... ;)

Happy birthday and congratulations on your engagement (and your beautiful ring!)! :appl:

Congrats wit your engagement and birthday!
The ring came out amazingly beautiful and looks stunning on you. Enjoy wearing this beauty.

This turned out beautifully! Congratulations!

I bought a gorgeous custom cut round citrine from Jeff Davies on ebay and a really pretty, sparkly blue topaz from someone on ebay who was clearing out their stash. I haven't done anything with either except keep them on my desk to admire during breaks from working :shifty:
