Hello folks,
I am looking around for antique engagement rings with a marquise diamond. I'm trying to get a sense for various styles and pricing. Does anyone have suggestions of where to look and/or have anything that may be of interest? Thanks so much for your help!

Re: Looking for Antique/Vintage Marquise Diamond Engagement

That second one at Lang's is like a marquise-shaped pancake, not even 41% deep (unless their depth number is wrong).

Re: Looking for Antique/Vintage Marquise Diamond Engagement

I understand you are looking around at pricing but how much do you actually want to spend? That will help us narrow it down.

For antiques I would look at dover jewelery, Israelie rose, NY Estate Jewelers, SingleStone, Lang Antiques, the 3 graces and fay cullen.

Goodluck!

Re: Looking for Antique/Vintage Marquise Diamond Engagement

From a prev thread i think his budget is 2k :)

Re: Looking for Antique/Vintage Marquise Diamond Engagement

Thanks for the help so far. Unfortunately, I'm on a tight budget. I'm looking at between $2,000 and $3,000 right now. Ah, the financial struggles of a school teacher... :/ Thanks!!!

Apologies, I can't believe I left that important part out...

If you're not dedicate to something antique, you could do this stone: http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/D-SI2-Very-Good-Cut-Marquise-Diamond-1526079.asp or this one: http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/F-SI2-Good-Cut-Marquise-Diamond-1460013.asp

and this vintage-inspired setting: hhttp://www.jamesallen.com/engageme...ingle-row-pave-cascading-engagement-ring.html

for $2,970.00 before PS and bank wire discounts. JA has a 60 day return policy and a decent upgrade policy if you wanted something different in the future. Just a thought!

I know its not vintage but if your budget is a little higher than 2k here is a nice bright marquise

I wonder if you said pretty pease they could find. Way to set it in that vintagy setting. Though i feel like its over priced :(

Wow! Thank you all for the suggestions and please keep them coming! I'm looking through everything and I will keep everyone updated. Do any of you have experience with purchasing loose diamonds online? I have considered this a lot and it just makes me a little nervous to not be able to see it in person. What are your experiences?

Re: Looking for Antique/Vintage Marquise Diamond Engagement

Oh yes many of us have have purchased diamonds online
.A reputable ps vendor will guve you lots of info on the diamonds

I think if you contact good okd gokd and ask you to find you the biggest eye cleab one they can at h or higher they coukd probably find one that woukd suite. Then its up to you if you want to put money into the setting or hold off.
I got my .9 h for 2700. I bet you can do better than i did if that was your diamond budget, looking for a marquise

Re: Looking for Antique/Vintage Marquise Diamond Engagement

Yep, Like the lady said ^^ that's what a lot of people in Rocky talky are doing.

For round diamonds, there are computational methods to eliminate poorly performing stones and narrow the field, sight unseen. Since you're looking at a fancy cut, you'd be best served by contacting trusted PS vendors and asking them to find you the best stone to their eye within your budget. nielseel has recommended Good Old Gold http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamondResults.php?shape=131072&resultsColumns=268435471 . The stones I linked to are from James Allan. JA will let you place three stones on hold for free, and then you can ask one of their gemologists to look at al three and give you their professional opinion.

I know it can seem scary, but it works!

These are just over budget, just in case you could squeeze or the sellers offer layaway:
1.5 ct solitaire http://www.rubylane.com/item/759961-103/Vintage-1-5ct-Marquise-Diamond
1.02 with bags http://www.rubylane.com/item/514555-rl-928/1-02-Marquise-Diamond-Solitaire

Aw, that 1.02 with baguettes

I know! Drool. Nice find!

Isn't that a pretty one? Such a great size. And it has a layaway plan "Available for up to an 8 month equal payment layaway at just 499. per month!!"

OP- I saw in your other thread that your girlfriend had a particular setting in mind. If you wanted to get a stone from an online vendor and have it set that style, I would suggest Daniel M on Etsy. I've used him to set gemstones, and so have some of my friends and several of the Colored Stones forum members. It's a simple design, and he's done similar styles.

I know there have been some recent very bad Etsy experiences here, and I don't want in anyway to detract from that or the risk inherent in online transactions, but I've had nothing but positive experiences with Daniel.

Re: Looking for Antique/Vintage Marquise Diamond Engagement

assuming your budget is now around the 2500 to 3000k like you said, i think this would be fabulous!!
http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/ER9042W4JJJ

they sell that at Good old gold.

Assuming that leaves about 2k for the stone, he could find you a marquise i bet between .7 and .8 ct. very nice size for a marquise

( i would just ask him to use prongs instead of V prongs at the tips)

Thanks! I am definitely looking into that as well and will check out his work!

Another quick question, when looking at diamonds online...

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/E-VVS2-Good-Cut-Marquise-Diamond-1541864.asp
http://beta.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/Marquise-cut/0.70-carat-D-color-SI2-clarity-sku-48848
http://beta.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/Marquise-cut/0.70-carat-D-color-SI2-clarity-sku-48848

These in particular, that have been suggested previously... How important is a very good cut vs. good cut when looking between these three? Or, in you all's opinion, which of the three is the best "bang for my buck" if I decide to buy a loose diamond online?
I guess my biggest confusion is what a diamond with a high color/clarity rating with a "good" cut VS. a diamond with a very good cut and a slightly lower color/clarity rating would look like side by side. Which would give the better sparkle? Which is more important, clarity or cut? Whew, that was confusing to type, apologies if it confusing to read and interpret!

That is beautiful! Thank you!!! Putting it towards the top of the list.

Referring to my previous thread; that is similar to the setting I posted that she is interested in (I like that it is a little more ornate and I like the fact that it has a matching band)

Re: Looking for Antique/Vintage Marquise Diamond Engagement

yeah i remember that original ring you were looking for, i think this would be a great alternative because it loose very vintage, a bit more so than the original, and still has that split shank look. As for cut grades, they are far less important for fancies like this. good Vs VG doesnt tell you if it has a bow tie or how well it will perform. For this i really just say shoot an email over to good old gold. they will do all the leg work for you. show you 3 and you can pick which you like best :)

also, it IS good it has a mathing band, but i still say let her pick that out herself, some like matchy, some dont.

I think you'll have a fabulous ring when you are done!!

A little over budget, but I've purchased from them before and they do negotiate.

Oh Dem, why did you have to do that? Not only do they have a french cut band in my size, but now I'm coveting another demantoid ring. What to do?

/end thread jack/

Closer to on topic, they do have a lovely navette hhttp://craigevansmall.jewelry.1stdibs.com/itemdetails.php?id=29585

Nice find on the setting nielseel! Sounds like GOG might be the best plan!

Re: Looking for Antique/Vintage Marquise Diamond Engagement

So whats the plan, stan?

Re: Looking for Antique/Vintage Marquise Diamond Engagement

Well, after looking at all of my options and with you all's help with loose diamonds and recommendations. I do believe I am going to have ID Jewelry make a custom setting and purchase a loose stone. I will update everyone with pics as soon as I can get finances squared away and the ring made. Thank you all so much for your help!
