Hi All,

My many thanks to everyones help in the process of geting the ering for my lovely fiance. I am looking for some more advice. As a christmas gift I would like to get a garnet ring for my fiance. She loves the red garnet color. I am not looking for something exhorbitant but would like to get a nice ring prefereably in sterling silver. My problem is in looking on line there seems to be a huge variance in price. I am looking for help in finding a reputable vendor that has rings with natural stones. I will need it by Christmas. I would like it keep the cost to 100 dollars, is that unreasonable?

Thanks in advance!

John

Greg, aren't "Mozambique Garnets" the yucky brownish-red ones? I'd be looking for Rhodolites, Spessartites, or Pyropes.

Chris, I think the suggestion is more about the maker than the stone pictured. Contacting them and asking if the could source another stone more to his liking would be the way to go. Mozambique garnet is not a garnet group, like pyrope, almandine, demantoid, grossular, etc. Many of the garnets can be brownish, but any type of garnet can produce wonderful examples too.

Got it. It looked like they were pre-made to me..(there is a list of stones available) and I've seen the term "Mozambique Garnets" used a lot to indicate the deep brownish-red ones, thats all.

John: what a nice thing to do! You have chosen well, as garnets are plentiful and inexpensive as stones go. As the other guys were eluding to, it will be harder to find a red red garnet, but you can avoid those overly dark, semi-brownish ones (like old red wine) and go for one that is reddish purple, reddish orange, or pinkish red. Keep in mind that particularly the red toned ones often "brown out" in fluorescent lighting.

Will you choose the stone first and then look for a setting, or are you planning on having a vendor source both and build it?

It reads like you are looking for a one shop ring place (get both stone and setting from the same place)? Are you concerned with mm size or shape? The big thing to realize that a red garnet isn't going to be stoplight red and also many tend to close up or brown up under indoor lighting. If you are fine with that, then let the shopping begin!

Beautiful red Ant Hill garnet, which is highly unusual because most are not this red. Price is also excellent although it eats up your budget for the setting as well. The second downside is that this needs to be prong set because of the dark tone.

Another possible contender for a pinkish red rhodolite garnet from the Tanga area. Price leaves you plenty for the setting. If interested, I would follow up with hand shots to verify colour accuracy.

"Yucky" is subjective.

I'm sure the OP realizes that compromises will most likely need to be made when on a limited budget and working within a relatively short time frame.

Thank you all for the responses! As I found out with sapphire shopping I have a lot to learn. My lady is not looking at a stop light red garnet. I think many of the ones posted would definitely be to her liking! The purpleish one that Chris posted maybe not so much. I think she would like it more on the orange side of red. I am looking to source the ring and stone in one place as i feel it would take to long to get it by christmas if i source it separately. I am going to contact Hunt Country (they ones who made the ering) and see if they have anything. They recently started creating designs in sterling and I love thier work. I will also contact some of the suggestions made in the thread. Thanks again everyone!!

Always check the preloved section (listed above as a subsection of "Pricescope Cafe") as there are often garnets being sold there. If you were able to source a stone quickly, you could have a jeweler make it or mount it with little problem. Let us know if your plan to have someone like Hunt source the stone changes. I agree that Dan and Caren would be good resources for you.

Thank you Minous! I will Let you know.
