Looking for something

Hi,

I'm looking for a setting, I'm not sure what, because I haven't found it yet... I'd like something that's not going to be difficult, I like easy.

Anyways, I'm looking for a pink spinel (or pink sapphire, but prefer the spinel) with white sapphire accents. Other aspects I am looking for in the setting are halo, pave, I really like the X-prong setting, though I'm not sure I've seen an X-prong with a halo.

Any suggestions?

It sounds like you are looking for a ready made ring? For the requirements you stated, it will be very difficult to find unless you are willing to build it from scratch. Firstly, there are very few settings made with a pave halo made of white sapphires. It isn't cost effective to use white sapphires because the labour for setting sapphires versus diamonds are the same, plus in those sizes, the diamonds don't cost much anyway.

For something exact, yes, but then again, one rarely gets good diamond melees (high colour with good clarity) unless paying quite a bit extra, either as custom or upgraded.

Thanks for your advise about everything, do you know if there is anything that is a halo that looks like an x-prong from the side profile?

Unlikely - to have a halo around the X-prong is effectively hiding the X design. In addition, putting a halo around it effectively creates an airline which might appear unslightly from the top view.

ok, thanks... So i guess I just need to find the halo that I like (with diamonds) and a cushion cut pink stone (either pink spinel or pink sapphire), i'm thinking 1.5-1.75 center stone.

When thinking colored stones you want to think in terms in size in millimeter measurements, not carats like diamonds. Colored stones of the same carat weight can very greatly in "face up" size due to the stone being cut deeper/shallower and because colored stones have different densities.

So:

A light pink (but on the "cool" side, lavender-ish, not orange-ish)
Cushion

Do you like square cushions or can they be more rectangular?
Have you tried on any diamond sizes and know what you like there? You should have an idea of mm size (6 mm, 7 mm 6 X 8 mm)

A 1.5 to 1.75 carat square cushion spinel will be around 6.5 mm to 7 mm thereabouts.

I really like something like this, it's just something that I happen to come accross... But I don't know anything about gems, and if it's a good one or not.

That spinel is cut very shallow, and has a window in the middle, so you'll be able to see right through it to your finger, and it won't flash or be "sparkly" in the center.

You should check at the "respected vendors" thread that is at the top of the forum, many vendors won't have stones listed, but may have something. You have to send a lot of emails, but it's worth it. cushions and squared off shaped are less abundant than ovals and rounds.

The spinel is what some consider a "pancake". It is shallowly cut, so the angles aren't right. Light will leak through the stone, allowing you to see through it and see your finger, metal setting, and in general, anything and everything else but colour. Is that a colour that appeals to you? It's not a bright pink but rather a muddy pink.

Yes, I like the lighter pink color. (though I have some pink sapphire jewelry that I also love, it's a hot pink) I'm just haven't found a stone that I'm in love with enough that I would want to put into my engagement ring. I have a small round spinel that I bought at a gem and mineral show many years ago (that's when I fell in love with Spinel), that hasn't been set either, but it's not big enough for a ring (in my opinion).

Do you mean light pink with light saturation or light pink with strong saturation? The example below shows a light pink pair of spinels but with reasonably strong saturation, considering the light tone.

i'm afraid i have no idea what saturation is, but i like the one on the right best.

They are a matched pair, so the colour is identical. The picture is to show a reference colour as something to compare to the first spinel you linked to. The colour on these are light but not muddy.

I really like the stone posted last, I believe they are asher cut, but I might be mistaken... and yes I like the lighter pink.
