I have a round diamond solitaire my late, very dear mother in law left me that needs to be set. I'd like a toi et moi setting, possibly with a pink sapphire or spinel, with an Art Deco feel. It's my husband's favorite and I thought it would be nice to combine it with his mom's gemstone. Finding it hard to locate appropriate ready-made semi mounts out there; any suggestions?

I think that would be a beautiful ring to honor and remember your mother in law. Stuller has some two-stone settings if you have a local jeweler who has access to their catalog.

Thank you! I was hoping to honor her. I haven't seen anything online in the Stuller offerings that looks Art Deco. Would a jeweler have greater/different options from their line? Or could I possibly modify something of theirs to have a more Art Deco look?

A jeweler could probably modify an existing setting to make it more deco style but it may be hard to get some of the details right.

Another option would be seeing if Ivy and Rose they would make you a setting like this since they do lots of antique and vintage reproduction styles. https://ivyandrose.com/products/1-5...ngagement-ring-old-european-cut-vintage-1920s

You should find the stones first. Then locate the setting. As a rule, coloured stones do not come in calibrated standard sizes which are ready to fit into prefabricated settings. Trying to put two stones into an existing (prefabricated) missmatched toi et moi is going to be hard. You really need to have the stones already, they probably need to be a matched pair (in terms of dimensions) and you need to already be corresponding with a setter like Ivy and Rose who will semi customize the mount for you.

Thanks for the recommendation, Qubitasaurus. So, then, if I understand correctly, I need to find a colored stone with the exact same size and shape of the diamond in order for the project to work in a semi mount? Would I have more flexibility in terms of dimensions with a setting that holds the stones lengthwise along the finger, rather than side by side ?

I think ask Ivy and Rose vintage what they can accommodate and search for the stone in parallel. But just don't purchase a setting before you have the stones.

If your daimond is round, then I'm guessing it'll be easiest to tick both boxes (a nice spinel, and a prefabricated toi et moi that fits both spinel and daimond) if you match the dimensions. As you've already noticed finding a prefabricated toi et moi isn't easy. Finding one which exactly fits a pair of mismatched stones is going to be super painful. You'll also end up discovering that locating a nice spinel that exactly fits certain dimensions (doesnt cost $$$$, isnt highly included, holds it'd colour and is vivid) is also usually tough. It'd be better if you had some flexibility, by trying to look for the spinel and mount at the same time. If you end up having to commit to one before the other, then buy the stone first. If you can get them close to the same sizes then you're going to have the best chance ivy and Rose or someone else will have a semi mount that fits

Thanks for all the pointers on the project! I think I found some spinels that will work well with the diamond. They're about the same dimensions, and the setting I'm looking at can be modified to accommodate them, according to the jeweler.

Which one would you recommend? I'm looking for pink-pink, but I have very pink skin so it should also be something that should visually pop and doesn't wash out.

I don’t think you will easily find a setting to suit. Best to wait until you have both gems. Perhaps you could could Ivy & Rose, they are in the US and seem very price friendly, they have stock settings with an Art Deco vibe so they should be able to make you something to suit. It will be more expensive than stock, but that probably can’t be avoided.

I actually did reach out to them but their quote for a custom toi et moi was surprisingly not as good as most of the other PS recommended vendors I got quotes from. Go figure. I think maybe they're super-swamped right now with orders and just weren't excited to work with me, given that I'm a first-timer.
At any rate, I'm taking all the great advice I've gotten here and am on to picking a companion spinel. Any thoughts on what I found and posted above?

So, although it's been a seemingly interminable process to find just the right way to give my mother-in-law's diamond a chance to shine again. Here it is, lo these many months later, and I have to say it was well worth the wait.

I love this so much and feel very inspired by it. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for the kind words! Wish I could get some video that really does justice to the sparkle on the spinel but I'm afraid I'm not that technically gifted.

Your ring is PERFECT. Thank you so much for sharing the results of your efforts with us. It looks like a vintage setting and is gorgeous.

PS can you share who made this and how you came up with the inspiration for the style? Well done!

Well, I was finding myself more and more drawn to a vertical orientation for a toi et moi since I have small, square hands and I need to lengthen them visually. (This is a model hand shot from the jeweler.) I wanted something flattering for my hands. Nnjgemstones on Etsy had a semi-mount in that shape that had an Art Deco feel, and they worked with me to make sure it would accommodate the different depths of the diamond and the pink spinel I brought them. I think the basket helped disguise the different depths too, and the white gold seemed to reinforce the Art Deco feel.

The ring turned out very pretty, hope you get many years of enjoyment out of wearing it!
