Looking to buy a present for my mother, any advice on emerald & diamond rings?

Aino, if you are close to GVA in CH there is a gorgeous round emerald and diamond prong set (not antique) eternity with big (ish) stones in a second hand shop in the old town with a 2k price tag. I and I just came back from a Zurich jewellery hunting trip where a few art deco pieces had emeralds. Apparently there is a big jewellery thing in Miami coming up so a lot of stock was not there.

Interesting! Could you possibly consider sharing your hunting ground recommendations in Zurich? :) I work in Zurich but live in Bern (Bernese partner, I'll celebrate when I manage to convince him to leave Bern!) and would LOVE to hear about good shops here. I lived in London before and loved the pawnshops there, so I'm suffering from a withdrawal syndrome.

No!! I had a detailed response and I lost it! Here is the.abridged version.

No great deals.
Christophe Walser in old town. Impressive section but impersonal retail.worth a visit but expect high prices.
Harry hoffman near stadelhofen was very friendly. He understood my obsession and brought out some pieces he knew I couldn't afford just to be nice.
Heldley prynn was very accommodating- opening up on a Saturday with short notice. And he has a love of less mainstream stones-tanzanite, antique tourmaline rings, etc. But he is not a storefront, his office is in old town.

I sent those 2 photos to my partner, because despite his absolute non-interest in my obsession, I insist on informing him anyway!! Just for an idea of prices, the art deco piece was priced at 12k, the very cute old 1860s ring from Hedley was pristine and 500. So not cheap, but not outrageous (for CH... ) Beyer is the only one I didn't make it to. They are at banhoffstrasse 31. I'm happy to find someone else who lives in my neck of the woods! Aka the money pit that is CH! Every time I import a stone, setting, or ring, I have the dreaded wait to see just how much the customs bill will be. The worst ratio wise was a $ 3 moissanite, charged 19chf in fees:cry2:. Ok, sorry for hijacking your thread.

Hey saw these and thought of your search, they're either under or over your budget but i thought they were pretty. I have not worked with this vendor before though.

Dear Lizakg, thank you very much for this list of names and your finds :) I am dealing with the same type of man unfortunately, totally uninterested in diamonds! Is your man Swiss? Perhaps it's a Swiss thing not to care that much about diamonds heh.

I passed the window of Rent a Box today in Zurich and there was a decent (about H and VS1 ) 1 carat solitaire ring for 12 000 CHF

The 0.25 OEC is really cute! I have started to become more interested in the OEC cut, probably need to find one sooner or later ..

I'm actually loving the customs here, I saved roughly 700 CHF when I ordered my ring here instead of Finland. But I'm sure it depends where you're from. Also if you are into finding online bargains, you get items tax-free from many larger German vendors on ebay.de and then pay the 7.5% here. So you get roughly 10% discount.

Would be interesting to do a hunting trip to Germany once and check their deals! Just need to find something to lure my man to join :)

Thanks Sabrina, I especially like the last one! And seems like a good price too =)2 It's classy and simple. I need to investigate her size better and check.

I actually have a confession to make. While searching for a ring for her, I found a new ring for me... Just could not resist this. It was something different.
