Looking to purchase 2-3ct OEC

How is the hunt going?

This is not to advocate for these stones but just to provide some personal experience on the face up color of super well cut OECs. I looked at the ring concierge videos and I think they are a GOOD representation of what well-cut L and N OECs look like in real life, I don't think a filter was used (and my own hands are many shades lighter than this!! :lol-2: )

You can see the difference here between the ultra-white radiator and the L-colored stone, which most people would definitely call "white" but it has a touch of cream in it.

The stone is also likely reflecting a white ceiling, but most ceilings are white, and D-colored stones also reflect their surroundings especially when cut with an OEC's broad facets.

The 2.11 L is cut very similarly to the modern "ideal cut" OECs that Victor Canera, August Vintage, and individual cutters are making today. But it probably is NOT spready for that reason.

Would love to see a photo of the 9mm transitional you are working on when you are ready to share it! It's fun to watch your hunt!

Hi @Polyhex! Thanks for the additional info and perspective. For the last couple of months (~6 months) of getting to know OECs and seeing a few from Adam, I have definitely come around to liking them up to an L color. I know Ring Concierge has a huge following on Instagram but that also turns me off a little bit - I am not sure I expect them to let me know that a stone is truly eye clean or the facets are nice, if that makes sense! I would almost rather work with a smaller dealer or a jeweler that feels more personal. But, since it would be quite the deal, I reached out to RC about the spread / GIA cert.

As for the Transitional, I will include some photos! I really like the facets and the videos the jeweler has shown me are really great too. He says when they got it in, then thought it would be a J-K and did not expect at all a GIA L. For just the stone, they are asking $18.5k. I have not tried to negotiate as I am not sure this is the one. They have a flexible return policy if I do decide it is the one and want to see it in person. What do you guys think of the stone?

I am hoping Adam, SinCityFinds, or others will get more inventory in the new year. In the meantime, prowling Instagram, ebay, and other reseller sites often to see if anything piques my interest. Obviously, still very open to a well-cut stone from a PS-er if the opportunity is there!

The pictures are blurry but it looks a lot like a transitional I wore for 12 years and absolutely loved, only moving it to earrings now because I got a bigger stone. If it's similar it will display fat arrows and a bit of checkerboard. Great spread. It all comes down to what you are looking for and whether or not you are comfortable paying to look at it in person, and whether the seller is OK with a "because I didn't LOVE it," return.

The photos are from a video screenshot, hence the blurriness.

The GIA L makes me hesitate, when I know it shouldn't because a K to L is so so similar. And it does appear to be a well-cut stone with good proportions, or it performs well in video at least. I think I would be happy with this stone if I got it at a good price. This jeweler does indeed accept returns for any reason! For now, I want to wait to see what the vendors I mentioned get in stock in January, and keep this gem, pun intended, in my back pocket.

Seeing as you had a similar stone albeit years ago, what do you think is a good price range for this stone today?

Hi all! Apologies if posting this in the wrong forum.

I have seen some amazing stones listed in the Pre-loved forum so taking a shot here to see if any Pricescopers are considering a sale at this time.

I am looking for a 2-3 ct OEC, K+, VS+, 8.5mm+. Not extremely particular on facet pattern (e.g. flowery or checkboard is fine with me), just looking for distinct, bright facets that are pleasing to the eye. My budget is $16k.

I am working with Adam as well but he doesn't have many stones in this range at the moment, so we are waiting to see what comes in within the next couple of months. He has a stone at $15k that I am considering if nothing a bit spready-er becomes available.

Thanks all.

Check this out if you are still looking:

The OP sold. I inquired about it while inquiring on other things.

Aha.. what are you inquiring? curious mind wants to know :Up_to_something:

I hope OP got it. It's a good one. White color black market price. It's incredible.

Consignment services. She’s been really nice every time I contacted her and her stuff sells super fast. I really like her. But anyway, I assumed everyone (I contacted contractors about house stuff too, so sadly not all jewelers) would be super slow to respond given the time of the year but nope everyone’s super responsive. She responded to me in less than 15 min.

Thank you everyone! I saw SinCityFinds’ post. She let me know in advance that these were coming back from GIA. I’m not interested in the OP but tempted by the J...

That 3.19 OP had a fabulous facet pattern!

This is the same 2.78 L - what do we think? I keep going back to this one's organized geometric facets. It's so lively in videos as well.

On a separate note, I'm seeing some stones next week with several DTLA vendors, so very excited for that! After that, I may pull the plug on seeing this L in person by getting it shipped to me. Does anyone know how much it would cost via USPS registered mail to ship back a ring with $15-20k insurance? If I were to return it.

If you go to DTLA, you might want to see SingleStone and Victor Canera. Both have nice stones and are around the corner from each other.

I've talked to Ari and I don't think his process aligns with mine. I want to design a simple, modern setting, while I believe his process is to design the custom setting around each specific stone. In other words, he designs his pieces, while I wouldn't really get too much of a say, if I'm understanding it correctly. Additionally, his prices are quite out of my budget.

VC's prices are also out of my budget, both in terms of the stone (someone had posted a VC 1.9ct that I reached out about, and the guy told me a 2+ ct would be a lot more) and the setting (again, want something simple and don't see the need to spend extra for a "designer" setting).

I do appreciate your suggestions though!

That OP is as good as it gets.

Does anyone like the L Transitional, above??:lol:

Pictures look ok. Still kinda blurry. Won’t be able to give a definite answer without a video.

I don’t like the L. It lacks depth for my taste and I find the facets to be unorganized.

Interesting, appreciate the feedback. I happen to find it very checkerboard-y and I like the spread that a 60-64% depth stone provides while also performing very well. As mentioned, I think I’ll ask for this one to be shipped out to me if I don’t see any I like in DTLA.

Do you have a GIA number for the L transitional?

I took the liberty of straightening it, zooming in, and sharpening the unfortunately slightly blurry photo.

I think this is a beautiful facet pattern on a true antique transitional. It is very rare to get more symmetrical and organized faceting on a true antique. Even if you were willing to buy a newly made cut, I don't know of any cutters who are producing ideal-cut transitionals.

I also think the cut is promising with respect to performance. The table is big enough to show a bit of checkerboard, but not so big, nor the stone so shallow, to produce the "flat" look that stones that show a perfect checkerboard have. It also looks like it's going to show off big fat arrows which is personally my favorite part of transitionals.

I think this is well worth a look in person!

For return shipping, some vendors carry an insurance policy that allows them to issue insured labels via fedex or UPS, so worth an ask. I think registered mail insured return would be on the order of $100 not too bad all things considering.

Excited for you!

OECs are different from Transitionals. Compared to OECs, the Transitional (above) is more shallow, has less height in the crown, and has a 57% table (so the proportions are more like an MRB). Some people are okay with this, some people like more 3 dimensionality, eg bulk above the girdle. The shallower cut makes Transitionals appear whiter, and you get more diameter for the carat weight. $18.5 for an L color 2.78 carat stone seems a little on the high side, IMO. But I agree with Polyhex, that finding an authentic Tranny this big is pretty rare.

The patterning does look checkerboardy, but I’m also seeing pinwheel light return, not “off on off on” in the facets under the table. In my experience, the pinwheel type light return can lead to a less organized look. I’m restating what Lessics says above. I would send for it to see what you think, but you could also obtain a couple videos and post here so we could see something before you go through the effort.
