Hi all, I am completely new to this subforum, and must consult the brain trust when it comes to colored stones. I think I'm being lazy with doing my own research and am now turning to the experts.

I'm looking for a loose colored marquise. I don't have the dimensions yet, but it would replace an approximately 1 ct marquise cut diamond that I am recycling into another ring project. I thought about using the metal in the ring to recycle and put towards the cost of the new ring, but it's a true "antique" with "1934" engraved inside the band and I could not bring myself to melt it down.

Of course once I have the dimensions I will be back, but just wanted to know if what I'm looking for exists. Ideally would want a natural gemstone. I contacted Jeff Davies a while back and while he said that he wouldn't be able to cut one for me due to lots of variables, he was very helpful and prompt in responding. The two that I did find on Etsy that might fit the bill are Montana sapphires, <1 ct and going for $800-1000 which sounds really pricey to me, but again I'm a complete novice with the gemstone market, and definitely don't want to get ripped off.

Any thoughts or leads would be really helpful! Thank you!

I don't think you've given enough info to get any useful responses. A less than one carat Montana sapphire can be anything from microscopic to .99 carats. It also comprises just as wide a variety of quality levels. It could be worth over $1,000 or less than $1, depending on the specifics. If you provide links to the stones you're considering, that would help.

Multicolour is a good starting point to look for something very specific like this. Once you have your stone measurements, you can use their ”Smart Search“ tab to select your shape and measurements.
Here are a few of the options that came up when I searched 10-11mm long by 5-6mm wide marquise (the links won’t work once a stone has sold).

You have to careful with Marquis shape replacement gems if you are using an existing setting, especially if it has “cup claws” at each end.
The Marquis shape is not necessarily “standard”, you can have fat Marquis, slim Marquis and deep Marquis.
And a 1 carat Diamond would be around a 1.20 carat sapphire.
You need the diamonds mm measurements - length, width and depth and use those to select an appropriate size/ shape replacement gem.
Whatever replacement gem you decide on, make sure your vendor has a solid return policy in case you need to return it.

Thanks all for the replies so far! This all makes sense to me and I know I need the measurements to really start to search, and that will come hopefully this week from my jeweler as they take out the stones from their setting.

And I totally hear you on the different variations of the marquise shape and need to be careful. I was just having a hard time finding any loose natural marquise stones. Most I found were sold in lots, without clear description of natural or synthetic, or were synthetic (which I may end up with at the end of all this, but it’d be super cool to find a natural one that fits).

I’ll be back with more updates!

Thank you!! This is what I was looking for!

Take him to a local jeweler only special equipment will help you give him a financial score! And I think it's problematic to do real interaction virtually!
