haha yea...I''m not really sure why I didn''t think about it that way. I suppose if we didn''t get maternity and something did happen there would be some sort of assistance or something I would think wouldn''t you?

Well that Illinois Healthy Women program I referred you to above should take care of it. That''s what it''s for.

Also, WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) might help her out too with certain things.

I''m just thinking of the worst case scenario (also keeping in mind our luck lately with the lost passport and such)...can you add it after you get pregnant or are you just tough out of luck? She''s been on birth control for a year or two before we got married just for cramps and also just so she could know exactly when her period would start. We have a friend who was on birth control and took it regularly and got pregnant...we kind of just want to make sure that if something does happen we have a plan.

Like I mentioned before I have been on BCBS for years (and have been very pleased). You have to add maternity BEFORE you are pregnant. You can only change your policy once a year (I think the first of every year) or 30 days w/in a life style change (such as marriage). Maternity is a lot of money and I really would practice family planning (reliable BC) than just add it for worse case senario. The maternity policy I have adds an EXTRA $350. That could buy a lot of BC

Our baby, and all future babies will be carefully planned. It is very difficult to get any decent insurance AFTER you are pregnant since they can consider it pre exisiting. I think a government program (if you qualify which again can be tricky) is the only option. Getting pregnant while using BC correctly (taking it everyday, not having sex while on antibotics since it can cancel out the BC, etc...) is very rare. I would just get the basic coverage for now. It is MUCH more likely she will get sick, break something, or just need some medicine before she has an unexpected preganacy. After all you only have a 20% when you ARE trying.

I spoke with a lady I work with who used to work for W.I.C. and she said that we more than likely would qualify for it, but she hasn''t worked there for 5 years and does not remember the exact maximum income to qualify. She did say that there were a couple of professors at my college qualified for it and their wives used it. She stated that it''s a long process but it is WELL worth it and most of the time it is the same doctors that everyone else goes to. I just wanted to have some information as to what options were available just incase something came up.

I think we''re going to lean towards BCBS but it''s just picking a plan that fits us and how much we plan to use it because the only prescriptions we have are her birth control which is a generic so we''d get it for like $15 or so. I haven''t been sick in years and when I was sick it was just needing a small anti-biotic and took care of the illness in les than 24 hrs. I could probably get that from my school''s nurse. So it''s just stressful trying to figure out which plan fits us and our situation.

But thanks for the help!

Glad you figured everything out! It is a stressful decision but then again being an adult is stressful

At least you know if she accidently gets preggo WIC could be a good option. I suggest getting a high deductable (min $1,000). Keeps monthly costs down. Also get at least an 80/20 plan. Look into the HSAs for tax benifits too.

Everyone should have health insurance. When I worked in a restaurant a girl got really sick (ended up with Chrone''s and had to have surgery). When it was all said and done she was 6 figures in debt b/c of her hospital bills. Also now she will never get health insurance since she has a pre existing. It is very sad.
