Update: We had a jeweler do a thermal conductor test yesterday, and it is definitely not a diamond. (Whew.) The girl said, "My guess is no one''s really stressing out about losing it."
However, we did use a diamond necklace and cz earrings to compare for the fogging. (I didn''t hold much in the mirror-scratching either.) The czs fogged right up, and the diamonds - and this THING, whatever it is - didn''t. So we put it in my parents'' possession to have a friend who''s an estate jeweler check it out and just make sure it''s not a white sapphire or something. I just saw it in person this weekend and definitely think it LOOKS like a cz, but the fogging thing is throwing me a little. It''s a more detailed cut than you normally see in czs too, so it does a weird thing with reflection - also throwing me. Not that I know a whole lot about gemstones in general, but I don''t want to leave any stone unturned. (Ha, no pun intended.)
On a side note, BF was hilarious digging through my jewelry box, necklaces hanging from his wrists, earrings in one hand, mystery stone in the other, breathing on ALL of it, and asking, "Is this real? How about this?" between breaths. (For the record, he usually remembers most of my jewelry is fake, fake, fake, with the exception of the diamond necklace and a sapphire ring from my dad.)
So if this thread hasn''t ceased to be interesting, I''ll let you know what it IS and if we find the owner. Obviously, I''ll do the massive search if it''s a white sapphire or something like that, but okay not to worry if it''s a cz?
