So i asked them if they had any more, they had but are all I1 I2 stones with visible inclusions.

now i chance across another diamond from another dealer. What u all think???

Carat: 2.48
Color: N
Clarity: VVS1
Cut: VG/VG/VG
Table: 62%
Depth: 59.3%
Crown angle: 34.5
Pavillon angle: 41.2
$11.5K (5-6k more than M)

I want to purchase it and wonder what setting can help with the color.

Theory 1: The diamond "takes on" the color of the band in which it is set. In other words, place the diamond in a platinum or white gold setting, and it will face up whiter than putting it in a yellow gold setting
Theory 2: Use contrast to your advantage. Place the diamond in a yellow gold setting and it will seem quite white by comparison to the gold. Place the same diamond in a white gold/platinum setting and it will appear more yellow in comparison to the white metal around it.

Help please....thanks.

This one will be definitely tinted especially in that size, plus the steeper pavilion angle won't help as this can trap colour, and the crown angle could be a bit steep to be a good fit for that angle anway. If it was me I would probably set it with a white gold head and prongs and a yellow gold band but probably whatever you do the tint will show. Really the tint is something you need to embrace as it will show, if you don't mind that then fine.

Or for the money look for a smaller whiter diamond? You could drop the clarity also. Is this one GIA graded?

hi Lorelei,

thanks for your reply, its really a GIA cert...its a 62% table, is it shallow?

Anyway, is it better to set all in white gold?

will setting the head in yellow gold help to make it less yellow?

Aside from the negative aspects Lorelei already pointed out with the crown/pavilion, that table/depth may also be causing light leakage. And ditto on the color entrapment. I''d personally pass.

It is a touch shallow in the depth, table is on the large side. There really are various areas of concern here such as leakage, colour entrapment and the tint the diamond will show anyway, so I would think very carefully and if you decide to go for it ask if you can view the diamond away from the store lights to see how the colour looks. It might look sparkly in the store but once you get it in natural lighting the stone could be less lively and that colour could really kick in.

There are various opinions on setting these stones. I am an L owner and mine is over 3 cts, I have mine set with a yellow gold band and WG head, that way the prongs and head aren''t transferring colour to the diamond and the band provides contrast - or thats my take on it anyway!

All WG might show the colour more, so it is really a decision that has to be made on a case by case basis. I don''t think you can get away from the tint if that is what you want, I think an N is too far down the scale to really look like a colourless or near colourless diamond, but its up to you.

Have you considered looking for a smaller higher colour diamond for the budget?

Are you looking locally or online? If online, I found this one in the virtual inventory. You could have it called in to a vendor that provides Idealscope pics and could assess the inclusions. It''s cut way better, and is being listed at around 7700ish. Just thought I''d throw it out there!

I would MUCH rather have this one and it is a lot cheaper too - nice one El!!!

Fankies!

i''m not living in US, and i have a bad bad online purchase experience. I bought a designer watch online and when fedex came, its empty.... long story...

But i have that phobia... anyway the local jeweler here are selling some diamond at my budget.

I''ve been asking around and not all the retailers have such offer other than the M diamond (for 6K but the spread is not as expected....i''m lamenting...) so this N color is closest to what i wanted....locally...

i understand fully that the diamond will have a tinge but i do not want it to be so obvious till it becomes a talking point. I want ppl to pass it off but i do know that it can never but like colorless.

So what setting should i choose?

1) yellow head white ring? (will this yellow enhance the yellow?)

2) All white gold

3) white gold head, yellow body.

thanks.

I would recommend a white gold head, and then whatever color you want the band to be.

My heirloom diamond has been set in both platinum and yellow gold. It''s never been appraised loose so I don''t know the actual color. In the platinum setting it was graded as J-K. In the yellow gold with platinum prongs it was graded as G-H. I believe it looks whiter in the yellow gold setting, which is in line with the appraisal estimates as well.

HI:

I would set it in a yellow gold mount--the yellow in the ring will draw the eye away from the tint in the stone....

If you are not in a hurry, cannot you not wait for an M colored stone, if that is what you really want? Sorry about your bad experience buying online, cuz that stone Miss Ellen posted looked fabu.....

cheers--Sharon
