Mmmm....perhaps you should consider Mahenges too?
11.gif
Yes, I purchased from Eric of Swala.
perhaps i will consider the Mahenges someday.
I really like those colours except, for a man, i cannot possibly be wearing a huge stone
haha
too bad of the male species =p

I believe that are quite a few male posters here who love collecting rather large rocks. As Colormyworld says, it''s nice to collect rocks large enough to handle with the bare hands so there''s no worry about tweezer accidents.

Chrono, what a beautiful project! (I''m late, I know, I think I thought I posted this already!). And I want to second all those who have said thanks. Your advice is always useful, kindly stated, and so knowledgeable!

hi chrono
may i ask who is your jeweler who sets your gemstones for you?

It looks awesome! Can''t wait to see it when its finished!

I have a Q for you: A stone of this value, do you get a cert for it from Swala?
Spinels are unheated and never treated, which is a plus. If it was a sapphire, then I''d get a cert, but not for a spinel.
Yet spinels are among the most commonly synthetics. I doubt any synthetic would look like your loevely Mahenge (I don''t think silk grows in those - yet), but, as a general rule, I think it would be wise to get certs for expensive spinels as well.

That is true about synthetics being very common in certain coloured spinels. In this case, I think an appraisal is probably sufficient since it will be used for insurance purposes.

I also mistook it for a ruby as well. I hadn''t heard of mahenge spinels, but do now! Very exciting! Will it be a ring to wear all the time or for special occasions?

Here''s a newer picture that was taken by request which shows the glow that Mahenges are famous for.
WOW!!! That is one yummy color, Chrono!!!

Congrats on your PS gift, and I can''t wait to see this beauty set!

Have you decided on the metal yet?

Part Gypsy,
It’ll be an almost everyday wear ring but not 24/7. I’ll wear it for special occasions and probably to work too, but kept clean and safe in its case at home.

PR,
It’ll be in platinum. The Mahenge colour goes well with all metal colours but since the setting has diamond pave, it’s probably best in platinum.

Just back again to drool over your stone. It has such a lovely color to it. Congrats and again TFS the whole process with us. I am now waiting for the CAD....

it''s gorgeous!!!

Thank you, ladies.
Another update: WF has checked out the stone and verified that everything is in order. They will now begin the CAD.

Unlike Miss AJ, I will share my CAD pictures here.

Under diffused natural sunlight, the Mahenge appears a very rich intense red. At other times, it is a red stone with hot pink flashes. Depending on the light source, it can also be a reddish pink or pinkish red stone but it never fails to glow at all times. Under incandescent lighting, it becomes a watermelon pink/red colour..

hi chrono
this mahenge would not be considered a stop light red right?
how does this compare to the AJS stop light red spinel that you have?

what kind of clarity grading does this mahenge has?

I can''t wait to see it finished!

I hope this project will warrant one of your infrequent photo shoots

Mark,
No, this stone is definitely not a stoplight red colour; it only gets super red in the evening sun. At most times, it likes to be red with a pink flash or pink with red flash. Mahenge spinels do not start to get red until about 5 to 7 carats. Most are pink or pink/red. I love this Mahenge more than the AJS spinel because it glows. The intensity and glow is something that I have not seen in any other red spinels. Of course, the larger size is tipped in its favour too. This is not to say that I don’t like the AJS spinel though. As a “regular” red spinel, it is a very richly coloured stone. In terms of clarity, I consider it eye clean from all angles.

Kismet,
I couldn’t resist that little zinger. It was just too easy to tease AJ.

Dreamer,
Are you talking about me, the one who took forever to even get a digital camera? I promise I will take pictures of the completed ring. How can I possibly not?

That''s right we deserve a regular photo shoot of this once this is completed!!!
