Mahenge question

So now i'm interested in acquiring a Mahenge and I love a square-ish shape (cushion or otherwise)...and I found one from a vendor that is 5.24 x 5.24 brilliant square (1.03ct), fairly saturated color and in my price range - yay! But here's my question: do you think that's awfully small? is there any way I can mount it short of halo-ing it like crazy to make it look bigger? Or do you think 5.24 is a decent size? Without dropping a boatload of $$, is it safe to assume it's just going to get harder to find larger specimens in a saturated color?

It's so hard to tell from everyone's pics here how it will end up on the hand, but for perspective I only wear a size 5 ring, and i'm not really into large stones as a rule - it took a lot of getting used to wearing my 8mm sapphire 3-stone ring....I could ask DanielM to design something around it eventually? Something like their diamond bezel halo might make it look bigger and emphasize the shape, which I love? Could I "safely" bezel a mahenge and not ruin the color?

Ok, so i'm seeing if this stone will work for me!

1.03 ct, 5.35mm square brilliant cut. I LOVE the shape and i'm hoping the color is as intense as described and how I see it on my monitor! I'm thinking a setting like this but in rose or yellow gold.

I think it will look lovely in that setting. It will bring attention to the color and make the stone look bigger. Can't wait to see pics of the stone and ring!

Where is that setting from?

So if you have reserved or purchased it, may I inquire as to the name of the vendor?

Yes, this is a stone from Peter torraca...I'll get it sometime next week so I'll see if the color is what I'm looking for!

The setting is from my folder of saved images and i know i got it from someone here but I don't know the name of the designer...anyone who knows, please let me know!

The setting is Durnell #28AA1 at Pearlman's.

Ooooh, thanks!!!

That's a very pretty stone and I love the cut.

So, did you get it and do you love it? :naughty:

Omg, YES!!!!!!!!! I meant to post some pics but with the craziness of the snow here in the NE I haven't had time. - we lost a huge tree in the front yard and we were running around trying to get that taken care of.

It's an amazing shade of red pink - much deeper than peter's photo, I think. And i may have found a setting for it as I wonder if the one I originally posted might not work for the size of stone i have?? Will post some pics shortly!!! It's so bright andsiper sparkly and I love the shape!

Yes, Peter made magic with that crazy looking piece of rough. I actually saw your stone in person a couple of days before you bought it, and almost brought it home with me, but hesitated due to financial reasons. By the time I emailed Peter to say "I'll go into debt for that puppy!", there were TWO people ahead of me in line! ;( SO, you must post lots of pics so that I can live vicariously through you! :) Congrats on a great score. Sorry to hear about your tree, hope it didn't cause too much damage!

So here are some quick shots of my own...I love it, the color is crazy intense though hard to capture on iphone:

And then I held the stone over my sapphire pendant to see what it would look like in a micropave setting. I really want something like the earlier setting I posted (Durnell?), but do you think it's enough to help make the stone look bigger? I already have another halo'd spinel coming so I don't know if I necessarily want another one...any thoughts would be appreciated!

For perpective, the stone is 5.35mm square.

Wowza! That is one gorgeous stone! It looks very saturated. I am not that much of a halo gal, but I have to say that when you put it in that white gold halo, it is really set off beautifully...

Well, after seeing your other spinel halo ring (gorgeous, btw), which is the one I assume you're referring to, I think that this stone in a halo would look different enough that you could justify two halo rings. Also, I agree with mb that this stone looks amazing in the picture with the halo around it. However, if you like the Durnell setting better, I think the Mahenge, though small, packs a powerful enough punch that you don't need to make it look bigger in order for it to stand out, especially since you have small fingers.
