I'm trying to be less of a lurker and post more, so I have a question to ask you guys. :D

I was wondering if any of you could recommend to me a good mattress set before I start my search. I plan on purchasing it with some of my tax refund so I have a couple of weeks to think about it and decide.

The current one I have is a queen size and was a very, very cheaply made set from a discount furniture place. My parents got it for me when I moved out of their house for college about 9 years ago and now for the past few months I've been waking up with back pain so I think it's seen better days. I have also been flipping it on a weekly basis and that seems to only help for one night at the most. I have noticed that when I spend the night at my parents house on their guest bed, my lower back pain is non-existent, which also leads me to believe I need a new mattress with better support. It also probably doesn't matter, but I want to upgrade to a king sized bed.

My sister said she used to have a Tempurpedic but they seem to radiate heat from what I've read on message boards and from what she's told me so I would like to stay away from anything with a foam material. I'm also not looking for a pillow top because I want a mattress that I will be able to flip every 3 months or so and as far as I know, I can't flip a pillow top mattress. I guess mostly because I want to prevent sagging and decrease the wear of the mattress so it lasts longer.

Any help or advice is appreciated. Thank you so much!

Woah... I am going to follow this thread a lot cause we need a mattress too!

I have a foam mattress at the moment and yes, it is SOOOOOO warm! I don't like it much, i wake up in the middle of the night
in sweats cause I am way way too hot, the socks and other stuff start flying lol.

The best sleep I've gotten was on a futon - I know most are probably cringing, but i might get back to that, granted my husband
would go for it... We'll see!

My DH and I recently sprang for an Essentia mattress, which I first heard about from some other PSers. Ohhhhh, how I love it. It is foam, but is made from natural latex rather than chemicals. It is no warmer than our old spring mattress was, and it doesn't have any of the nasty chemical off-gassing you get with regular mattresses. Plus, they are manufactured in Canada rather than overseas, which i preferred. They aren't cheap (especially for a king-sized mattress) but it was SO worth it. The website is http://www.myessentia.com, and they sometimes run sales...maybe once per season or so. We got the Classic 8 because we couldn't justify paying for the fancier ones, and it is fantastic. I could never go back to a spring mattress.

Englander is my choice.

I can tell you what NOT to get- A King Koil pillow top. We have one (a king size), and two of my friends have a queen size pillow top. DH and I are not big people, but our weight over time has caused the pillow top to compress, so now there is a big ridge in the middle. King Koil will not replace the mattress unless there is a 2 inch deficit in the mattress itself, not the pillow top. Now I have to roll up-hill to visit my honey... Totally not worth the money. I would buy a King Koil, but never ever another pillow top.

I just went through the mattress & box spring purchasing process. :wavey:

Many mattresses on the market contain memory foam or latex. They do not stay as cool as cotton. We have Stearns & Foster right now, and my DH and myself tend to get overheated easily. So this time I focused on mattresses that are made of cotton.

After lots of research, I find two good manufacturers: McRoskey and Shiffman. Both have great reviews online. McRoskey is based in California, and sells directly to the public. Shiffman is based in NJ, and has some retailers. They both hand make their mattresses and box springs, and thus are not cheap. Shiffman is a little pricier than McRoskey.

We ended up getting McRoskey, because a) it is a bit cheaper but still very high quality, b) their mattress is not as thick as most mainstream brands (for firm comfort, it is 8'' thick), and thus can be flipped every once in a while without too much trouble, c) their box spring height can be made anywhere between 8''-14'' to accommodate different bed styles (we chose 14''), and d) their customer service is excellent; we called the manufacturer several times, and asked all sorts of questions.

I cannot comment on how comfortable they are, however, because they are not delivered yet. LOL!

Last year I got the Simmons beautyrest (bora bora) plush thumbs up. One frustrating thing you will find, it is very hard to cost compare because different stores call the same (or very similar mattress) different names. So write down the specs of what you are looking for (number of coils, thickness of coils, layers, etc) to figure out what is the same mattress elsewhere. My mother recently got a plush Sealy mattress and is also satisfied with her purchase.

For some reason, my husband and I preferred how the spring mattresses felt compared to the latex or foam mattresses when we laid on them on in the store.

I also went with the plush rather than the pilow top, because I've heard the pillowtops break down faster than the rest of the mattress, which then makes the mattress too uncomfortable to sleep on (furrows).

We recently got a latex mattress and we LOVE it. One of the nice features is that it sleeps cool, but it's also super comfy. Doesn't suck you in like a tempurpedic but also is so much more comfy than a boxspring IMO!

pure latex....none of that combo or artificial materials. last i looked they had gotten pricey, though....we got lucky when we got ours 10 years ago and its still fine.

I would totally look at latex/foam mattresses but my long time, picky boyfriend told me he absolutely hates them, even though he hasn't owned one. I guess he doesn't like the way they feel. This just means I get to torture him and take him mattress shopping with me! He hates shopping.

I know you're gonna think I'm crazy, but this is the mattress I have: http://www.otisbed.com/haley_110.php
Actually, I have 2 - one on my guest futon and one on my bed. Both are about 10 years old now...the bed one needs to be replaced, but it's a cheap mattress compared to most ($385 for a queen on Amazon), so I think that's reasonable.

It's the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on. I hate it when I have to go to a hotel or sleep at someone's house with a spring mattress. I'm a stomach sleeper and they all make my arms fall asleep all night. All our guests comment on how comfortable it is. 100% have said this - and it's not like we prompt them or anything. My mom liked it so much that she bought one for her guest room and for her own room.

It's made in the USA and has a 10 year warranty. They also make a firmer version (Haley 150) and a softer version (Haley 90).

Latex and memory foam are TOTALLY different! We looked at memory foam awhile back but were not sure about the negatives. We ended up with latex and we LOVE it! I can't say a negative thing about it. I researched until I was blue in the face, but almost all pillowtops had negative reviews after a few months regardless of price. Then there were mattresses with a little layer of memory foam or latex, and I didn't trust those either. I searched until I found one with a latex core and top layer. I think this company is only in the southeast, but we bought from the Original Mattress Factory. They have two latex sets and one is thicker and softer than the other. We chose the one that was slightly firmer because my husband wanted some support. I have slept better than I ever have. I just regret not getting latex years ago. I am sure it will be the only mattress we buy from here on out. Oh, and it does flip, unlike many mattresses today. And it is not hot like memory foam.

and latex is good for those with allergies...unless you're allergic to latex.

There IS only latex. ;)) I was fortunate to grow up sleeping on a latex mattress.

http://www.flobeds.com/latex/index.htm

We have the Posture V-zone Talalay Latex mattress. It is totally green, and customizable per sleeper - each side can be different.
We adore it. Worth every penny. Check them out. Good company with good staff, good shipping, good return policy. We have been terribly pleased with the purchase.

I do have a dustmite allergy so that might be a pro for latex. I used to take shots but I haven't had any in two years when I moved cities.

I'd rather go used car shopping than go mattress shopping again. Or have a root canal.

We have had a Sterns and Foster for the last 5 years and love it. I did a lot of research and wanted springs after we went and tried some Latex beds, they just weren't for us, and memory foam was both stinky and hot.

My parents have a great bed too. It was my second choice, but now I can't recall the name of the vendor for the life of me.

I love my Sleep Number Bed. We've had one for 12 years.

We went into a Sleepy's and said show me your cheapest firmest mattress. Sounds like a mistake generally, but it worked out. I'm a stomach sleeper and needed a firm mattress to prevent back pain (from over-arching while sleeping).

Honestly, it was the best choice. I can't actually tell you the material b/c I don't know, but I know it cannot be flipped. A lot of mattresses these days are being made one-sided. I don't recall the purpose for this, but we've had this bed for almost five years and have not had any issues with it to date. We do turn it from foot to head of the bed. We paid less than $800 for the mattress and boxspring.

Happy mattress hunting!

I just bought a mattress. It's a Restonic Magnificent Middle with a dreamy 5 inch visco foam topper. LOVE IT! Although, I would never pay full price for one. If I get 2 or 3 years out of it I'll be very happy. It's normally a $1,300 to $1,800 mattress but I bought it off of some people we know that stage homes with furniture. Only paid $285 for the king set (mattress/box/frame). I've seen some pillowtops that offer the pillowtop on both sides so that the mattress can be flipped. We had a Doctor's Choice Cal King Firm for three years that we bought second hand just out of college from somebody else. It's still quite alive and going strong! No sags, tears, dead springs....nothing. We've never bothered to flip it or rotate it either. We just don't sleep well on a firm anymore and a cal king was a bit too long for the master bedroom. That one was bought from Denver Mattress Co.

Last year, we purchased a Shifman King mattress/boxspring from their Masters Collection (Van Gogh, I believe). Love it!! I used to wake up in pain but no more :appl:

We're on the hunt also ...

Tried dozens yesterday, including the Sleep Number bed that my sister recommends. (Wasn't "getting" it. It was too subtle for me) We're pretty close to pulling the trigger on a Simmons ComforPedic Phenom Plush w/ an adjustable base. It's LIKE the Temurpedic but feels more comfie to us for some reason, contains both foam & latex, doesn't keep the heat in, and had a quicker response to weight/rolling over etc. New Gen/Next Gen foam-ish stuff?

HOWEVER: my sister says adjustable beds are for "old people". I have GERD. So does she for that matter. The ability to raise the head of the bed a few inches could be LIFE CHANGING for me. Right now we prop the whole bed up on a few books and it always drops off at the most, um, inopportune moments. But STUPIDLY I'm fretting about the STIGMA. At 43, I don't wanna feel any OLDER than I am. My younger husband doesn't care and thinks we should go for it. WE LOVED THAT FREAKING THING ... did I mention the leg part curves too? And it has massage features (w/o having to drop in quarters, or go to the Poconos). But ... the SHAME .... UGH. And the add'l cost -- pricey!

Thoughts?

What price your health and comfort?

Besides, there is only a stigma if you invite people into your home, and go: "Hi, I'm Decodelighted, and this is my husband Mr. Decodelighted. Would you like to see our adjustable bed??"

If you love it, buy it. At least it doesn't have the stigma of having separate bedrooms, which I wouldn't mind at all, since both of us have periodic rounds of insomnia that disturbs the other. Now that is a pain too. I think having your own room would be so plush... You could meet in the middle when necessary. ;))

We got ours at Macy's. They have good mattresses and good sales on a regular basis. If you buy one at Macy's, the sale prices are a lot less than the regular prices.

We bought there because we live in the middle of nowhere (on an island) and it was convenient.

The chemical smell of mattresses isn't pleasant or good for you (I agree) and I had to air this one out and wash the mattress pad many times until the smell went away (it hasn't entirely actually but it has substantially and it's getting better all the time).

I have a pillow-top coil mattress with pillow tops on both sides, so it can be flipped regularly. The pillow tops have a mixture of fibers with a high proportion of wool - absolutely heavenly. I've had it for well over 10 years and it's still holding up well.

We ended up going with a Simmons Beautyrest Easy Nights. I've had it about a week now and my back pain is so much better and I want to do nothing but lay in bed all day. I don't know that I'd call it a pillowtop, but it has a foam layer on top and I can't flip the matttress but it was so comfy in the store we didn't care! I'll still rotate it every few months though.

Mattress Firm was having a sale and I ended up getting $100 off the purchase price. I ended up paying $1800 for the frame and the king set which was more than I wanted to spend, but now that I've slept on it for a week, I think it was worth splurging on. I think my cat likes it too because I've caught her sleeping on it when she's usually following me all around the house :D .

I affirm many of these comments. Most recent purchase was for older son, and got a beauty rest, with many individual coils. But, yes, hard to compare. I prefer places like "Mattress Discounters," which have some comparison data, and where you need to be willing to negotiate, rather than walk away with the list price. If you've a partner, go with them, as desires for firmness will differ. Though my wife preferred less firm, we had problems with an older bed of ours, and I convinced her to bring upstairs a more firm bed we'd earlier agred to, and I believe it is suiting us well.

Another vote for the simmons beautyrest plush!

Wow, I feel like I need a new mattress after reading everyone's posts.

Mine's nothing fancy. I have a Serta Perfect Sleeper that I bought on clearance at a Sears Home store about 9 years ago. Its just a regular spring mattress without a pillow top. I like it because I can flip it. Its been 9 years and it feels pretty much the same as it did when I bought it so I guess its a good mattress!
