After being obsessed with old cut diamonds for a while, I landed a very lucky deal!
I just bought today a 0.74 ct antique OMC (~ 5mm x 4.9 mm), whom I have lovingly named Miss Puffy:

IMG_9723.jpg

Obviously not perfect, she has 1 carbon inclusion near the table but practically imperceptible, at least to me (and un-certed). But that's part of her charm!
I'm in love with her tall puffy crown!!! :kiss2: :kiss2: :kiss2:

She's a higher colour grade than the photos are showing; it's my shirt reflecting on the diamond causing the hue. My gem dealer estimated her somewhere GHI (your thoughts?). She's got beautiful blue fluorescence and was a total white sparkle bomb in the sunlight earlier today! Unfortunately no sun videos :(sad

Videos:

I plan to use her for my future engagement ring...
So for now, Miss Puffy stays in safekeeping! :D

In the first photo she looks way off symmetrical. Does that bother you?

I can’t tell if it’s the picture, but in the first photo the diamond doesn’t look like it’s cut symmetrically. That might also have an affect when the jeweler is trying to set it into a ring? But if you love the diamond then that’s what’s important!

I think range estimate starting at GH is pretty generous.
But you state the photos arent representative so it’s hard to give thoughts on that as you ask for.

I’m happy to see you so excited for the purchase of your future engagement ring stone. :)

Do you happen to know what style of setting you want?
Do you wish to embrace its outline shape personality or camouflage it?

Not at all! :D

I've thought of this! Maybe with a simple prong-set solitaire, it wouldn't be much of an issue?

Thank you very much!

Colour: Very fair! I should've known better. :D It does face up much whiter but I'm also inclined to believe GH is generous. I'll try again in the sunlight, and not wearing a yellow shirt.

Setting: Not much fuss, I like this a lot, and with 6 petite claw prongs (but in white gold):

I quite like the wonky shape though I'm not sure if this setting ^^ would pose problems!

I would discuss in detail your stones girdle with whomever is supplying the setting and their bench’s previous experience with setting such stones. Maybe even ask for examples to see.

I think knowing what to expect with that will help greatly with your end result satisfaction.

I can only imagine what a local to me chain jeweler that sends their stuff out would do with notching to a modern brilliant and forcing the setting would look like.
Or a local to me bench jeweler that is solder happy, what it would look like.

I dont think that setting is going to work with that stone...for a couple of reasons. The setting is made for a round stone not a
cushion shaped stone. The wonkiness of the stone will also be a problem.

When you go to have it set you can ask the jeweler for opinions on what would be the best kind of setting for it.

It does look like a sparkly little thing with lots of personality! Please come back and post after you have it set!

It's SOOOO pretty! I love old cuts and you have a one of a kind there! You asked what we think of the color, I had an OEC "L" color and this looks like it's showing a bit more color than my "L" did but as you said it could be the lighting or your yellow shirt!

Im so happy for you getting your dream diamond!! The thing about old cuts is YOU have to love it and no one else. It's YOUR diamond and you love it so it makes it perfect!

Oh she is gorgeous! I would love to see your ideas for other settings too. Stones like Miss Puffy are sometimes divas when it comes to how they are set (what dress they prefer to wear) and that's part of the charm. Do you think you would like a micro-slim bezel?

The diamond certainly has a lot of personality!

Definitely wonky and I would say almost beyond a shadow of a doubt the color is more likely L/M/N with blue Fluor ... are you okay with the price you paid if the color is so much warmer than represented by the vendor?

What a cool stone! Your setting options will definitely be more limited given the shape. You will have to go custom. You could do a bezel. I think she would look so cool in a Georgian inspired setting!

Agreed on the color and hope you paid a fair price.

Do you like more antique type settings? I'd think about something like a collet setting

I have a somewhat wonky antique stone and set it in more of a faux bezel, although a three stone, you can see how it would look as a solitaire

I think a setting more in the style of the same era as the stone will probably suit the stone best.

I have a few local jewellers that have been recommended by friends who have worked on similar antique stones before. I'll be sure to check out their previous work; thank you for the reminder! :) All of my jewellery settings are custom-made so aside from the recommendations, I also have two of my own that I regularly work with.

Thank you for the note! I've seen the tulip basket done with cushion-shaped centres before, but I realise now that they were mostly, if not all, done with 4 prongs. And, of course, done on symmetrical stones. I'll ask my jeweller for their design recommendations as well, but I feel more comfortable coming to them with a design in mind already and then maybe working on how it can be modified to fit the stone.

Thank you! After the (very helpful!) comments on this thread, I can see now that setting her will be a bit more complicated than I realised! I don't have many ideas other than the one I posted. :(
Unfortunately, I've never really been one for bezels...

What a cool stone! Your setting options will definitely be more limited given the shape. You will have to go custom. You could do a bezel. I think she would look so cool in a Georgian inspired setting!
Thank you! All my jewellery settings are custom—it's the norm here for fine jewellery. It's an exciting project, to be sure! :D I'm not a fan of bezels very much but then again I also haven't really looked at many bezel settings before... I'll try and search for Georgian-inspired settings! Most Georgian pieces I've seen are usually cluster rings.

I'm open to exploring more antique-inspired setting styles! Though I'm not too fond of the collet setting.
Thank you for sharing your three stone! Might you have more photos? I quite like how it looks and actually, I can't really see the "faux bezel" (which is a plus for me). And I can visualise how my wonky stone might end up set in a similar way (but solitaire)!

I tried to take a few more photos today with some natural light through the window but it's a gloomy and overcast day, and I'm not very good at these photos

I agree with all the kind comments here about the colour estimate being too generous. Miss Puffy does show a bit more colour—I think the blue fluo was very much in play when I met with my jeweller! We were seated outdoors under sunlight.

The diamond certainly has a lot of personality!

Definitely wonky and I would say almost beyond a shadow of a doubt the color is more likely L/M/N with blue Fluor ... are you okay with the price you paid if the color is so much warmer than represented by the vendor?
I think so, too, now! I don't mind very much. I suspected it was warmer but I was too excited and let my common sense fly.

Agreed on the color and hope you paid a fair price.
She was 600 USD (converted from my local currency) :)

It's SOOOO pretty! I love old cuts and you have a one of a kind there! You asked what we think of the color, I had an OEC "L" color and this looks like it's showing a bit more color than my "L" did but as you said it could be the lighting or your yellow shirt!

Thank you very much for the sweet, kind words! I do think she is very pretty, and she sparkles wonderfully!

For a minute I was a bit disheartened by all the comments on the asymmetry and the warm colour—all very fair comments, but that's why I come to PS... to learn! :)

So maybe Miss Puffy might not be exceptionally perfect, and I might make concessions on the setting... OR... this gives me an excuse to keep looking for a "more optimal" OEC candidate...:razz:

You probably already know this, but Rocky Talky is generally understood for threads seeking helpful comments and candid feedback.

The "Show Me The Bling!" forum is where members share their treasures new and old, and unless advice is specifically requested by the poster, comments are positive and complimentary.

Your thread about Miss Puffy was posted in RT which is why people responded with comments intended to help ensure you received what you wanted and that it was at a price you find fair. Most people were quite complimentary about Miss Puffy, but it is true certain mounts can emphasize wonkiness and it is true some vendors list an old cut as higher in color in order to price it higher ... posters were looking out for your best interests while you still had an opportunity for recourse.

Certainly the price was very fair for what you received, and certainly Miss Puffy is a beautiful and charismatic old-cut diamond -- congratulations on your find!

Oh no, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to come across as ungrateful! I really am very happy about and thankful for the helpful comments received here. :D It was very eye-opening to read about what I should expect for settings, and I was glad to receive second opinions on the colour. It helped validate what I suspected (colour wise) but I was too purchase-happy at the moment and just rolled with what the vendor said  That is fully on me!

Thank you very much! I love being on PS and learning more, and the community care here is irreplaceable. Miss Puffy is wonderful, but the comments brought me back down to earth and now I'm even more excited about fate bringing an even better old-cut diamond my way one of these days  the engagement won't be for a while, yet, anyway!

As long as you love it and paid a fair price, we are all happy for you!

Thank you very much! This gives me a great opportunity now too to explore other setting ideas and styles I didn’t originally think of :kiss2:

I love her! The wonkiness, the high crown and rustic cut - so much personality. She reminds me of some small OMCs in a brooch I have and they are real sparkle bombs so I imagine Miss Puffy is super sparkly. Agree with others that she is warmer than GH, but $600 isn’t GH pricing so that’s good. Excited to see how you progress with the setting.

Pretty and sparkly!!

What is GH pricing?

What is GH pricing?

Per OP: “My gem dealer estimated her somewhere GHI (your thoughts?).”
I was talking about color and should have said ”GHI” to be clearer.

I like more yellow-looking and "wonky" stones as they're more unique...so I think your stone looks great.

I was going to recommend a bezel as that type of setting could be customized for its ("wonky") shape but I see you're not too much of a fan of bezels.

What a great find!! I love me a good deal and especially in camp wonky!!

Gorgeous!! It’s got so much character, love it.

I'm totally Camp Wonky too and I LOOOVE Miss Puffy! Congratulations and I'm so glad you found something that makes your heart sing. I feel like antique cuts are super individual but I've never seen a puffy, wonky diamond I don't like.
