Men and women are happier in marriages in which the husband earns more money

FI will likely always make more than I do, or at least more stably than I do. My career has the potential for astronomically high income (when it rains, it pours!), but the vast majority of people are just "getting by." I'm too young-in-the-field to know which direction I'll go, but in all likelihood I'll be in the latter category.

We've talked about the possibility of my being the breadwinner, if I do happen to be one of the "lucky few" in my career. He says it wouldn't bother him--but would likely always want to work at least part-time, even if it wasn't "needed." Then again, that's really hard to predict until a couple is in the situation, I'm sure.

As long as we have enough money, and we can relieve one person of their earning duties while the kids are very young (this is important to us), I think we'll be okay

It's funny, I sent that article to my fiance without comment. He started reading it and started talking about how how he didn't mind that I earned more than him and how we already did those things in the article.

I had to remind him that he actually earns more than me (and he knows my salary)

Realistically, at some point I'll probably out-earn him, but it probably won't be that substantial of a difference.

ETA: I'm pretty sure I'd be happier in a relationship where the husband did the majority of the housework

Completely off topic, but lucky--I used to teach lit at a community college and I LOVED IT! I''ve been thinking about going back for a while, it is really an incredible place to teach. I''m planning on teaching H.S. students for a few more years, but I''ll definitely end up back in the community college setting, or perhaps a very small private college.

Have you ever taught as an adjunct at a local C.C.? It''s a great way to get a feel for the atmosphere, but watch out, you''ll be hooked!

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled thread . . .

Paul makes more than I do, but not by a whole lot. He''s a teacher, so neither of us are running toward the Fortune 500 club here, but Georgia is one of the best states in the nation as far as teacher salaries go.

If I were to leave the world of social work and enter counseling, I would likely make a good bit more, but for me, the job is about what I do, not what I make.

I don''t mind that Paul makes more, and he wouldn''t mind if I made more than he does. Neither of us care. We aren''t (usually) very money-driven people, so as long as we have what we need, and can sometimes get what we want, we''re good.

As for housework: I *know* Paul appreciates that I do more of the work around the home than he does. He''s getting better and better at doing things on his own, though, which really, really helps my mood!

I still can''t for the life of me understand why so many men think a cup, once completely emptied of its contents, needs to be left lying around for who knows how long. It''s a mystery. Speaking of that, Ta Dah!! got his into an empty cup a couple days ago. He didn''t get stuck, but he got too scared to even back out of it on his own. Silly!

Really? I honestly can''t think of anything more fun than discussing literature all day! Hopefully I''ll be as good as MY prof was. She had a way of making everyone WANT to learn. We could pick apart certain works for hours. She was the best. I emailed her the other day because a high school in the area is going to put on Moliere''s "The Miser". We''re excited. lol!!

How do you teach as an adjunct? What IS an adjunct??? Seriously, any tips you wanna give me I''ll appreciate big time!

We make almost equal. Some months I make more, some months, he makes more. The housework is, um, behind.

We haven''t really decided who wants to do what yet and right now I just clean up and every so often I''ll ask him to do the laundry/dishes/whatever. I''m perfectly OK with doing the majority of the housework since I like to do it & am not super busy.

If it was up to him, he''d earn more so it would allow me the option to stay home. I have no qualms against that.
