My BF is starting to try on w-bands to see what he likes. He prefers a w-band that is mostly brushed metal.

Here are some examples of what I mean:

or

But I''m concerned that the brushed parts will scuff easily. Today at Birks he tried on a men''s wedding band that was the display model and was all scuffed up on the brushed part. The saleslady told us it could be polished. I''ve also seen similar rings on guys at work that look all banged/scuffed up on the matte/brushed part.

-Do these brushed metal rings scuff easily?

-Does it matter is its 18K white gold or platinum? (ie. does one scuff and the other not so much)

-Can the scuffed part be polished to look like new if its gets banged up?

Thanks!

I don''t know about gold, but my platinum wedding band is a matte finish and yes, there are scruff marks. The thing is, you can''t really see them unless looking very, very closely. If I compare it to my high polish rings, I think the matte looks better.

Thanks elle chris. Can your platinum matte band be repolished?

And did you mean that the scuffed matte band looks better than the scuffed high polish rings?

Yep, it can be polished. They just smooth it out but keep the same matte finish.

And yes, I think my scuffed matte ring looks better than my scuffed high polished rings. But again, they''re platinum so not sure how much of a difference that makes..

Here''s what it looks like after 5.5 years. Mind you, I''ve only had it polished up twice, and the last time was at least a year before the pic was taken. I think matte finishes hold up well (at least in platinum).

FI has a brushed palladium band, 6mm.

I think scratches and dents definitely show, just as much as on my shiny polished band I''d say - just in ''inverse'', if you will. His scratches and dents are shiny patches on a dull surface.

pic (he''s worn it at home daily for 3mo)

I think it shows less - it''s just as visible but the scuff seems closer visually to what you''re going for anyway then again with shiny rings the shine overpowers the scuffs usually... guess it really IS a tossup lol

my platinum ring got pretty scuffed on the MATTE areas and some idiot when I was getting my 6mo check polished them out so now my matte areas are not matte or shiny - they''re just dull. Good thing there is a diamond to make looking at the ring obsolete lol

Yes. DH's band is brushed and polished... Both parts are scratched, but honestly, no matter what type of band he gets it will get scratched, so it doesn't really matter. Get what he likes, he can always get it polished.

yssie: those are exactly the scuffs I saw on the demo ring.

cehrabehra: Your response makes me wonder if matte/brushed metal rings really CAN be polished. Other responses indicate yes, but yours indicates that the matte finish was ruined with polishing.....??

I''ve had mine polished twice and didn''t have a problem. I did go to a jeweler who carries the desginer that made my ring, so they know what it''s supposed to look like.
