My bf inherited a ring from his late grandfather (they shared the same birthstone). It''s a round and unfaceted garnet. The problem is that he would never wear that style of ring and even if we reset it into a new ring, I don''t think he would be inclined to wear it. So I tried to think of other things that the stone could be reset into - he doesn''t wear jewelry, a keychain would make me afraid that the stone would become damaged, and I don''t think he''d ever use a moneyclip over a wallet. I threw the idea of a pocket watch out, and while a bit impractical, the idea seemed to appeal to him.

I found this pocket watch online. Could the stone be taken out of the ring and somehow set into the middle of this pocketwatch? Would that look weird?
Any ideas of who could do that and how much it would cost?

Any other ideas for a birthstone gift for a man?

From a design point of view, I don''t think the stone would fit in well within the scroll work and it would look just "stuck on" there instead of being an integral part of the design. Also, the scrollwork will make fitting a bezel to hold the garnet much harder, since it will have to fit nicely over the bumps and crevices. I think you can find a better watch for this project.

From a pratical point of view, what is the watch made out of? Depending on the material, it may be easier or harder to solder a bezel on to hold the stone. If it is silver, it is easy. If it is stainless steel, it may be a no go. I don''t know how much a jeweller would charge for this, but it shouldn''t be very complicated.

Could you set the stone into a fob or charm to wear with the watch? It is an old fashioned look, but may work well.
