Mens wedding band sizes - what's most common (width)

Hey everyone, since I need something to do to keep my mind occupied until I pop the question, I've been looking at wedding bands for myself, and wondering what the most common band width is?

So, I was wondering for you ladies (and gentlemen), what size is your hubby's (or your) band? Does it look right on his (your) hand? what is his (your) finger size?

My fi has larger hands and doesn't fit stock rings but jewelry stores, at least around me, have a stock of many steel rings in many sizes and widths. They aren't designed for sale, just for this specific endeavor.

DH wears a 7mm comfort-fit half-dome 14kt white gold band - we bought it in ring size 8 - the width and look of the band looks perfect on his hand and he wears it 24/7. He can take it off but it is a bit of a struggle. He works construction so he wanted a sturdy work-horse kind of a band - the finish on his ring now (15 years later) looks brushed especially compared to mine which is still shiny, but his looks whiter and mine could use a rhodium dip. Now he talks about having a diamond band that he can wear "for dress" but we haven't explored his options yet.

I had this exact same question, and I have the exact same problem (my hands are a 13.5). I'll be following this thread with interest.

I did go to one custom place and they had a few in larger sizes. I don't think they had multiple widths though. I haven't gone looking in a while though. Tiffany told me straight up they didn't do anything bigger than 14. Could be just that one SA though.

I'm pretty sure I want to go Mokume Gane, so I need to know size and width before I order.

My so and I walked in to a local B&M store, not a chain. They pulled out this box with probably a hundred or more plain steel bands ranging from like 4-16 or something. And sizes ranging from 2mm to 10 (I'm just guessing these numbers)


And worse case so they only go up to 14, putting it down to your knuckles to see how it looks is better than not going to a place at all. Look around, I'm sure my local store didn't invent this box. And I'm in sw lower Michigan. So if I have it, others have it

My ring finger is a size.....14.5. Yup.

I have had all kinds of rings over the years, some quite large.
But I find that to wear it every day comfortably, it has to be smaller.
And, as opposed to "regular" rings, a wedding band needs to be worn every single day ( just ask my wife

So, for me, 3mm comfort fit is perfect.
I cant even tell I have it on.

I'm not sure what the most common width is, but I will say personally, I like 3-4mm width on my size 9 index finger, and I think 5-7mm looks good on size 11-12.5 fingers (from what I've seen.) My exH used to wear a size 12-12.5. His old band was I think 6-7mm wide and I thought it was a good width for him. I've heard that some men find the feeling of wearing a ring uncomfortable, so sometimes they go for thinner width (such as 2mm) or comfort-fit inside helps as well. I've seen 2mm width on a man's hand once and it didn't really appeal to me, but that's just personal preference.

I'm posting a couple of photos I took of different widths of rings a several months ago (I don't have all of them anymore.) The largest one on my middle finger is a size 12.5, it's around 6-7mm width. The widest band on my ring finger is a size 9, and it has a 4-5mm width. The other 2 rings are 2mm width. My ring finger is a size 7, index finger is a size 9, and my middle finger is a little bit bigger than a size 9. But this helps give an idea of different widths. All of the rings are either unplated white or yellow gold.

Since your fiance has larger fingers, I would probably stick with 7+mm... Most men's rings I see in my area are from 5-8mm. My husband is a size 10 finger and has an 8mm. It's a good size, but I think 7mm would have worked too.

jmarshall, in general I would probably say at least 5-6mm seems like a "standard" size width for most men's bands that I have seen. That's hopefully wide enough to not look dainty in proportion to your hand, but small enough to not be uncomfortable.

My husband's ring is 8 mm wide. He has very large knuckles and narrower fingers between the knuckles. A very narrow band flopped around on his finger, moving between the base of his finger up to his knuckle so he got a wider band to take up that space and stop the flop. It works, very little movement while the ring is on the finger.

Personally I love the look of 3-5 mm wide rings on guys. It looks silly on husband though. Too much flop.

Hubby's ring is 6mm wide Damascus steel and he is a size 9, so on the smaller size of average probably for a guy's ring. But, he plays Baroque flute and so doesn't like thick rings at all and 6mm is about as wide as he would go. I think the width looks good on him but he could also carry off up to 8mm no problem and as slim as 4mm so I think it's mostly what you think is going to look good. Do you have any rings that you wear currently? If so, what kind of widths are they?

My husband has smaller hands for a man (7.75, I think) and wears 4.5mm and 5.5mm bands, respectively.

BP, yes, the steel is expensive in comparison to ti, and gold, and plain, non name brand platinum rings. We paid about $200 for his ti ring, and about $1000 for his Damascus steel one nearly 8 years ago. His steel ring is so pretty though. I wish I could wear one wide enough to show the pattern. I sometimes wear DH's ring on my middle finger if he doesn't.

5-7mm is the norm I see IRL. My husband has had both 6mm and 7mm on his size 9 finger. My dad has very large hands, 13.5 or 14, and needs a bit wider ring to get the same look, he wears 8mm titanium bands these days after losing a few rings.

Of course, go with what YOU really like - although you might want to check out wedding bands guys wear in your social circle/work group. I notice that with the exception of the visual arts, there's usually a "norm" within groups - although you should feel free to take note of it and ignore it too!

check etsy for damascus steel rings. I think it will probably vary a bit. We had a little .05 bezel set diamond put on hubby's ring so that made it a little more than a plainer one. You might also do a search for mokume gane rings on etsy if you like the look of damascus. There are some less expensive mokume alloy rings you could get made for yourself to see how you like the while idea (and wear as a RHR later).

My husband wears a 13, his fingers are long, and his ring is 8mm wide. That was the minimum width he could have the ring be and it not look dainty on his giant man-paws. He could easily have gone wider but the ring he loved only went up to 8mm. If you can't try on rings and won't order some steel or titanium bands for cheap online, measure different widths on paper and cut them into strips and tape the strip around your finger to see how the width looks.

Hubby wears a 6mm on a size 11, I think a "normal" width would be from 5mm to 7mm, hubby bought a 8mm but he hated it so he returned it and got the 6mm comfort fit and he said its just right.
