Misheard Song Lyrics

Me: Now suddenly, your eyes get forward back (??)

Actual: Now suddenly, you're asking for it back

Every. Time.

(You Broke Me First by Tate McRae)

Earbuds.

I wonder how many people listening to a song they thought they knew well are listening to it through earbuds for the first time, saying “Wait a minute, I thought those words were….”

I’ve been listening (and singing along) to The Mamas and Papas for - well - decades. The first stereo album I ever bought was the one where they’re all in a swimming pool.

So the other day I was listening to California Dreamin’ with through earbuds - apparently for the first time, or at least for the first time when I wasn’t multi-tasking. I’d always thought the line was “I walked into a church and I began to pray.” Thanks to the earbuds, I know know it’s “I pretend to pray.”

Not a big deal, but it does make me wonder how many people have lyrical “wait a minute” moments because of earbuds?

I always thought it was "I began to pray" too!

I've never been able to properly hear lyrics so I'm constantly incorrect. Sometimes, it does not even matter when I learn the correct lyrics because I've been singing my own version for so long.

The one song that popped into my head when seeing this thread was "Living Direct" by Prince. Alternately, aka correctly, known as "Little Red Corvette." Just the actual title of the song, but whatevs. ;)

I have an endless number of songs I could list but no one has time for that. :D

Edited to add: Oddly, I have always correctly heard the more popularly misheard lyrics mentioned earlier in this thread. Like, Bad Moon on the Rise, and all of the ones on the cups. Really strange.

I was [today] many years old when I realized that the last line of the chorus of the Beatles’s Blackbird is…

You were only waiting for this moment to ARISE.

All these years I’ve been hearing, and singing…

You were only waiting for this moment to ARRIVE.

That means I’ve been hearing and singing it wrong for over 50 years!

We’re on the last leg of a long drive home. We were listening to a CSN recorded live cover of Blackbird when I found myself saying, “Wait a minute! Did they just say ARISE!??”

When I was kid, I wondered for many years what a 'butter dream' was. I thought that maybe it was a golden dream, or maybe a dream of butterflies...

Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.

Well i learned something new today. You are not the only one who thought it was ARRIVE @VRBeauty.

My contributions to this worthy but vampire thread:

In Hildegard Dolson's autobiography, her brother Jimmy sings "Christ the Royal Master leans against the phone" rather than "leads against the foe", from Onward Christian Soldiers.

The Righteous Brothers sing "How can you walk out knowing/I ain't got nothing left if you do."
I always thought they were singing "How can you walk out knowing/I ain't got nothing better to do." It's close, but I think my version is more petulant and passive-agressive.

Same here! Oh well. Maybe it should have been ARRIVE :lol-2:

The song Africa “There's nothin' that a hundred men or more could ever do” my DH thought it was “There's nothin' that a hundred men ON MARS could ever do”

ETA - same song almost everyone hears “I miss the rains down in Africa” when it’s really “I bless the rains” but I think “miss the rains” is better. Love that song and its musicality is genius but the lyrics make no sense lol.
