Mismatched Gold and White Gold Rings: Tacky or Not?

It's not a good idea in terms of durability. The two different metals will rub against each other and the white gold is much harder than the yellow gold. It will scratch the yellow.

Never heard that before. Why would Wg be harder than yg?

White gold is not an element that comes out of the earth looking white - it's an alloy of yellow gold mixed with a white metal, which is why people with a nickel allergy are careful what it's mixed with (making sure it's palladium, for ex), or perhaps avoiding white gold and going for platinum. What the yellow gold is mixed with with changes how hard it is.

Thanks for the advice everyone  I really want this band, Zales is having an online sale & the total w/ 10% off is $243 plus free shipping? Would it be wrong of me to get it now? Or better to wait until the wedding/after the wedding? One last time for advice

I say buy the band, I don't think you will regret it! :)

Sorry for the horrible picture quality, but here is a picture of my rings stacked. I bought myself the inexpensive white metal spacer and alternate the metal colors. The spacer and engagement ring are both 2mm. I'm not sure how thick my wedding band is but probably between 3 and 4mm. I love it!

Get the band immediately, in order to take advantage of the sale and show it to your fiance and other people whenever you think it is appropriate...

Thanks so much, yeah I went there after work today & the lady told me they have sales like every day/every other week, so I think we'll be ok :wink2:

Hey everyone, so I haven't told FI about the WG band yet, but he talked to me today & said that he is thinking of switching the anillos (rings) for one that has diamonds, they are still YG...

He said they would look along the lines of this:
imagine this but a ROUND ring, no countour

or this:

*I'm thinking it will be more like the 2nd one, that is more common in Latin American countries, if u have a diamond you have a LOT of wealth...

I am waiting to see the ring to see if I should bother getting the twin sister WG from Zales:

what are your thoughts? Think it will go well w/ my round?image_606.jpg

Out of the 2 yg bands, I think the first one matches your ering a bit better because of the milgrain - the second one is more contemporary. Do you have any say, or is he going to surprise you?

WG is harder than YG because of the alloys and the rhodium plating. WG is like 220 on the Vickers scale, and YG is something like 155.

He is going to Surprise me. He said I could pick a yellow band w/ diamonds or a plain yellow gold one...at this point I wonder if I should bother w/ the WG bold

Ah ok - would you rather have the plain yg band or one with diamonds? You could get the plain yg band and still get the wg diamond ring...although I'm starting to sense you're nervous about how he will react to the wg band! If you decide to go with a yg diamond band, I'd probably hold off on the wg one, for now at least. You could always get it later as a 1st anniversary present.

If it were me, I'd probably stick with the plain yg band, only because you say he's probably going to go with the more contemporary one, and I think a plain band will go with your ering better than that one.

CaribbeanBride: your engagement ring is beautiful! I just happened to be skimming Rocky Talky and your thread title jumped out at me because I've recently begun wearing a yg band with my wg e-ring.

We never got a wedding band to go with my e-ring, because I could never decide exactly what I wanted. My e-ring setting is tapered and doesn't sit flush with a regular band, which bugs me. I have a set of 3 hammered 24k yellow gold Gurhan rings that are like 1mm, and I wear either 1 as a wedding band or 2 on either side. I like the way the mixed metals look!

We keep talking about upgrading my setting and getting an actual band to go with it. I just apparently can't be bothered to make up my mind and just GET SOMETHING ALREADY. In the meantime, thought I'd pop in here and post another photo example of mismatched rings. Good luck with your band-buying adventure!
