First off, I've been reading the forums here for a while and decided to make an account and finally post.
Today I dropped off the certified check for my GF's engagement ring from Tiffany & Co. 1.3 ct H, VVS1 tiffany setting. It's the second most expensive purchase I have ever made in my life - the first being my education (short life - haven't been on this planet for too long). And no the 1.4 ct would not have been too much, simply - I couldn't afford a 1.4 ct.

Anywho, I have noticed a lot of anti-tiffany sentiment (generally) on most of the popular message boards - don't take my word for it - a simple google search for tiffany engagement ring will bring up more hits than you wish to read. None-the-less, I have come to realize that I understand the sentiment. Tiffany, like BMW, Apple, Bang & Olufsen, etc. etc. are all premium products within their respective domains. There is no reason why a 4 door sedan that goes from point A to B should be 50K when a Honda does the exact same thing and costs 15K. Or why an iPhone costs $200, when you can get an Android smartphone for free, or a home speaker system costs thousands when you can get a Sony or Samsung system for hundreds (or less). But then I get it - BMW is the "ultimate driving machine" - drive a Honda and then drive a BMW - it's like night and day. Use any Apple product - they just work! Listen to any Bang & Olufsen speaker - the sound is divine. But Tiffany just sells the same diamonds that anyone else sells. Aside from their trademark blue box, the product doesn't set itself apart from any other vender. An 1.3 ct diamond is a 1.3 ct diamond whether you get it from tiffany or not. So what is it? Why spend the 30+% extra for something that you can easily get somewhere else for much less? The only conclusion I can arrive at is - it's a personal decision - primarily driven by value. A combination of cost (aka what you can afford) and perceived gain.

I think the focus shouldn't be "you can get something that looks just like a tiffany ring, but costs less" - looking like a tiffany ring isn't the end goal - their diamonds are just the same as bluenile, cartier, etc. They sparkle just the same, they weigh just the same, they are graded just the same - so "looking" like something isn't the focus - or rather shouldn't be the focus. If it is the focus, it will always fall short - because it will never be a tiffany ring. It's like buying a Honda and putting BMW stickers on it - it doesn't work. Rather the focus should be on getting a product (ring) from a place you are comfortable with, that will provide you with the services you require for the lifetime of your ownership of your product.

In closing, Tiffany rings should not be the standard to which your purchase is measured. It's just another vendor - like bluenile, zales, kay, jared, cartier etc. So if someone asks "Should I buy my GF's engagement ring from Tiffany?" The correct response is something along the lines of "Do their services align with your needs - short and long term? Are you comfortable with their organization and services?", instead of "You can get something that looks just like a Tiffany ring but costs less by going to xxx". (and yes - I purposefully left out discussing price. I believe that if someone is looking to buy a particular product they have a general idea of how much it costs, and thus can afford to shop at that particular establishment)

Totally agree about what ppl can afford and if the brand (service and reputation) works for them, it works for them. It is how it makes you/SO feel that is the most important. if it sings with you, it sings with you..

I am going to present a different view point only for discussion and in no way discredit you or your opinions... it is just a different view point. I don't mean to offend.

However, i suspect most ppl (like myself) that come here want to get value for money: THE stone that is a SPARKLER and in their budget! Ppl learn alot about diamonds: the 4 c of which cut is the better of the 4 c's, what you can get away with clarity wise for value etc.. So, when they look at the tiffany ring(s) and they see what PSers have; they soon realise what diamonds these online vendors have available in their inventory; it far outshines what Tiffany has. So, the PSer gets better bang for their buck.. and definitely a better result. so, a win/ win. it is a tiffany-esque ring with a better diamond, and within budget. I doubt that the PSer would call it a tiffany (setting) ring.

If they still want a tiffany ring, they go buy it cos they like what tiffany means; like yourself. That is totally fine. There are certain things that i like from a particular brand, and i buy that brand eg- My Louis Vuitton Wallet. There isn't anything like it on the market except for fakes/copies. I could have bought the fakes but i chose not to. It is because of the brand- service and product etc.

I like walking into Tiffanys store- there is a certain air about it.. The brand gives you that...

The thing about tiffanys' diamonds: there are better diamonds out there as per online vendors here. you just have to read the posts and see the pictures. I don't think your anology of HOnda and BMW works here. BMW is by far better car than Honda. However, Tiffany diamonds are not better than the online vendors. Tiffany diamonds are better than some of the B&M stores, agreed.

So, if the question about buying anything from Tiffany/Versace/ BMW is exactly right- does it meet your needs.. if so, go for it. if you are something better...

Once again, only presenting the case in a different way.

Glad you are comfortable with your decision and the peace of mind is definitely worth it for you, Mike! Enjoy the new ring and please come back and share pics and your engagement story!

For me, I still prefer to get the best quality and 'bang for my buck' that some of the PS vendors provide, as opposed to purchasing a "name"--- and DEFINITELY not a B&M/mall store. After the box has been presented and opened, it is then the item that you are left with. For me, I'd rather know that the item I bought, is the best that I could obtain for XXX amount of money. I prefer the open disclosure approach of the PS vendors and being involved in selecting the best diamond I could afford, vs what Tiffany provides - but I've only ever bought silver items, no diamonds, and I'm basing that on past posts I've read on PS about Tiffany. Just my opinion :))

And your analogy was amusing to me - I drive a Honda!

Congratulations on finding "the one" (both the ring & your future wife)!!! :appl:

I can just imagine her face lighting up when she sees the Tiffany-blue box. Make sure to have someone there to capture her first reactions. This is so exciting!

So which setting did you choose? Tiffanys really has an exquisite selection. So PLEASE come back & post pics of the final product. We'd love celebrate w/ you guys! :wavey:

Congratulations on picking a ring that is exactly what you wanted. That's the real mission and you have succeeded beautifully.

I suspect when people come to PS with the question, "Should I buy a Tiffany ring?" it's because they already question the cost and value. There are many PSers who own beautiful Tiffany rings and many others who have had their rings custom made. I find working directly with a jeweler to create a unique piece of artistry very rewarding. I can't get that personal treatment at Tiffany & Co.

And I don't consider your comparison of a Honda and a BMW accurate. My Leon Mege is no Honda!

Congratulations on picking out the perfect ring :appl: She will be so excited!!!

As for as picking Tiffany... my husband drives a nice BMW... I own some really pretty jewelry...none of it from Tiffany's. It's a personal choice and I really am very comfortable with the knowledge I've gained here to chose a diamond from a preferred vendor and feel like I'm getting the best. Again...it's a personal choice..you made yours and you're happy. That's what matters.

I'm glad you found the perfect ring, for you. But as for the rest of the post, Pricescope is a forum that is financially supported by Tiffany competitors. And the participants here are primarily people who buy from Tiffany competitors. Many of us consumers here are component-buyers. We wanted a really great diamond, no matter what brandname, in a really great setting of our own choosing, that may be some brandname, but it ain't Tiffany. And many, many of the settings chosen by PS participants are about as far from a Tiffany-look as one could get.

So, why would you expect to come on this forum and read a lot of glowing praise for Tiffany rings? Most people here probably came here because they wanted something different. And they didn't want to overpay for it. For many here, Tiffany styles were not ever in the running. I don't think, just for an example, a Brian Gavin Signature diamond in a Victor Canera custom mounting IN ANY WAY analogous to someone putting BMW stickers on a Honda.

I hope you come back and share pictures of the ring with us!

I think when people buy at Tiffany's they are buying into the whole package of Tiffany. It is sort of a magical thing and I don't think most people would turn down a gift from Tiffany's! Their stones don't fall into the super ideal cut numbers that we often see here but then again, most of their rings are beautiful. Their criteria might be different but the finished package is still something to behold IMO.

Congrats on your engagement!

Congrats Mike - post some handshots - when are you giving it to her??????

I think a 1.3 ct diamond ring from Tiffany would be wonderful! :appl: I actually went the route of getting a replica of the Tiffany setting and then got my wedding band from Tiffany (anniversary new set). They had the best wedding bands and I was willing to pay for it! There are others here that did that as well, such as MissGotRocks right above me! There have been many here who have gotten the best Tiffany replica setting because that is a classic and timeless look. I do like a lot of classic Tiffany pieces and I do watch for them being sold second hand and have picked up a couple of like new pieces that way!

Exactly. It's more akin to buying a Ferrari and then putting BMW stickers on it.

I am a firm believer in people getting what they want and buying what is right for them! Congratulations on your purchase, very exciting! I for one appreciate the historical significance of the Tiffany company and really love some of their timeless and classic pieces. I hope to own one someday! I think their channel set band is amazing. Please come back with pics!

Love this post.

I have faltered numerous times going back and forth on tiffany vs non-tiffany's. I wanted the Tiffany Novo until i found this forum...then i was convinced Tiffany is evil and totally changed my tune. Mind you, all along my bf was only considering T&Co - He didn't mind the markup, liked the customer service and the piece of mind. I liked that although i knew their stones aren't super ideal - he couldn't really mess up and get a complete dog. After a year or so on the forum, i'm back to where i started. I need to make me happy - and although 10k could get me a much bigger stone online - i'm quite happy with the prospect of receiving my future stone from Tiffany's. I, of course, am still waiting for my little blue box. :Up_to_something: I will also be getting a Tiffany wedding band and so will my FF. We have decided since we don't want a big wedding, we will spend the money on our wedding bands and really treat ourselves!

Please come back and post hand shots!!! :)

with any of the brands you mentioned, you really pay for the experience and prestige that comes with the name.

my brother is an audiophile and will swear that there are brands 1/3 less cost that have better sound than bose and B&O..i think for those whose purchase isn't also their hobby, its just easier to say I have a bose system, an iphone, or a tiffany's ring -- whereas most of the people here know the exact carat weight, where their inclusions are, what percentage of each metal is in their setting, etc.

then there are those like me who could only afford a tiffany setting with a pebble off the street set in it...we just try to educate ourselves enough to get something that'll make the GF swoon within our budget.
