Mixing diamond color grades in your jewelery wardrobe

I think it's fine. My center stone is a J (with an I colored halo, mind you). My studs are J. My two right hand rings are both Fs. My OEC pendant is a K. I have a loose emerald cut K. My two 1/2 eternity band has I's. I like that I have a range of different color grades. Seeing this written down also makes me think I have a bit of a diamond problem.... ;)

For me, it depends.
I do layer a G colored pendant and a J colored pendant together--though I can tell that one is higher color than the other. Of course the pendants are quite near to my H colored studs.
However I won't wear my F colored ring on the same hand with anything except my G colored five stone. Will I be shot if I say that the reason is that all the other diamonds look fine by themselves but dingy when right next to the F, as if they need a good clean (and yes, they are well-cut, it doesn't matter). As far away as the other hand though they're fine.

The pieces that i wear everyday together are my ER and wedding band and they are all in E color. I also have earrings that i wear very often with those rings and they are in F color, so i don't see any difference whatsoever. My diamond pendant is in E color too.
Nevertheless, i wouldn't mind mixing those pieces with other colors, as long as the cut of the diamonds was excellent and they were very sparkly :cheeky:

Most regular people (aka not PS'ers) can't seem to tell much of a color difference in general when it comes to diamonds. I cannot tell you how many people I have had say that my e-ring stone (a 2.32 J) is a D or E. And my K pendant, most people just say how white and sparkly it is.

Most of my diamonds are lower colors because I like the bang for the buck, I am not color sensitive and I actually prefer them against my skin tone more. But if I had an F or G in a ring, I would def wear it with my J or similar... if I was building a 3 or 5 stone though I'd probably try to stay within 1-2 color grades if the stones are right up against each other.

I have a GIA, Trilple X, 2.43 J SI1 on hold for my engagement ring... My bf wanted me to pick it out (I'm a lucky girl! ). Are you pleased with your J? Do you ever look at it and think, "OMG, I have a yellow diamond!". :? I'm a little nervous, but I think it's just psychological. I originally had a 2.01, I color with the same GIA specs and thought it looked very white, but I know when you go larger color is more apparent. I looked at them side by side outdoors in the sun as well as inside, and I swear I couldn't tell a difference! Just wanted to know your thoughts... Also, what light situations make it look more or less yellow? I work in a pharmacy with crappy halogen lighting and worry that it will look bad where I spend most of my time... My setting is a micropave cushion shaped setting for a round, so you will not be able to see the side view of the diamond. I know that this is where most color is seen... Ugh! Help make me feel better please!

What exactly is the concern?
I can imagine two:

1. A person may feel that diamond colors worn together simply should match for aesthetic reasons.

2. A J worn alone may pass as fairly colorless, but wearing that same J next to a D makes the J's color more noticeable and that truth is too painful for some people - as if having a J is a bad thing that they want to keep secret.

Can anyone think of any other possible downsides to wearing very different-colored white diamonds together?

No, I think those would be the only reasons. For me, I enjoy G and J colors by themselves, but next to each other, somehow it clashes to my eye.

Totally agree dreamer. I could wear different colors in my ring and earrings, but both on the same hand I would see the difference and it would bother my type A personality :loopy:

Until finding PS, I didn't really understand the differences in color. My ering is a K, pendants are an I and an H and studs are Gs. I mix and match them at will. I wear an eband with G melee with the K, but the melee is so tiny, it just looks like a bit of sparkle to me.. Before getting the eband, I even paired the K with colorless cz, I couldn't see a difference though those stones were larger than in my new ring.

I asked about this because my OEC is an EGL I color -- looks about like a J to my eyes -- and my half eternity is G colors. When it was loose the color of my OEC was noticably different than my eternity. But now that the OEC is mounted in white metal, I can't really see any difference unless I help them right next to each other and really look hard. So I think this question is not moot for me at least!
