I find bright overcast days the best for taking pictures of gems. Because the light is diffused through the clouds, it can make for very even and bright lighting, kind of like the world is your light box.

Mmm....vivid medium blue-green maybe? The photos don't really convey how in your face the color of it is...

It's funny, when I tell people my favorite stone is emerald, they will say why, because the stones they have seen are milky, opaque, dull, etc.
