I would get the plush shag. If your son can turn his head I don't see much of a danger. I think that yes, kids get hurt. It is a miracle toddlers survive. But, I don't think the point of the rug is just for protection. It will provide a nice, comfortable place for you both to sit and play.

Ditto. You might want to check out Lowes or Home Depot. They usually have the plush shag rugs in stock.

Thanks ladies. I have a credit at Overstock so I was looking on there and they have a few cream plush shag rugs. I have always wanted one, and thought it would be fun for J to play in but was worried it might be too fluffy. Though since he sleeps on his stomach now, I guess if he manages that he'd be ok on a play rug.

And I meant to say an 8x12 rug as a minimum not 8x20 :o

I actually have a 4.5x6.5 foot rug in our family room, which is carpeted anyways but the rug is for decor, and looking at it now I think it *might* be big enough to actually play on in a pinch, but 6x10 or bigger would be my best suggestion if you want it for the comfort factor. I agree with Tacori and Steph, that it is not going to protect them much anyways, but it IS more comfortable sitting on a rug than a hard floor.

Lets see, Hunter has fallen down our half flight (4 steps) of stairs about 2-3 times, done a complete face plant on the concrete, bonked his head more times than I can count. Yup, a rug won't help much :cheeky:

And I think the odds of him smothering on a plush rug are pretty low, so I would go for it!

re: 8x12...ok that sounds more reasonable. i was like damn who has an 8x20 living room where a rug just takes up part of it. i live in CA, woman! i can only afford a postage stamp size living room.

the shag rugs on overstock are not that exp and if i got something like that it would be used elsewhere for sure so i could prob get a bigger size. i have been considering getting one for the dining room anyway so it could extend out and give J room to play on. we'll see!!

thanks for all the help. i'll report back at some point with what we do and if it was effective or just maddened the monster.

mara,

i had the same issue as you about a year ago and we already had a large (gorgeous!) silk handknotted rug in our living area over our hardwood floors. it is 5x8 i believe, but even a rug didn't seem soft enough to me for when my son would topple over or fall when trying to stand.

my solution was to keep a sleeping bag (the ones that unzip completely to become essentially a flat cushy mat) and lay that on top of the carpet. i would just leave it there most of the time, and it was a quick thing to roll up if we ever had ppl over. it was a great way to protect my carpet from baby drool and mess.

also, the natural hw cleaner i use on the floors is Bona - works really well and is non-toxic so there were no worries when the little one was crawling around.
