Montana Sapphire--I love it!

Here is the Montana sapphire dh and I bought from Mastercut Gems. It is 1.62 carats and a gorgeous blue-green, more green than blue. I love its light color, sparkle, and the way it changes colors depending on the light source. Dana was SO very helpful to me, and hand-picked this from his friend Paul's stash of gems.

We're going to have a ring made, yellow gold setting, probably a solitaire on a narrow band. I know that's not the popular style now with all the paved bands and halo settings, but it will suit me best. I will wear it with my wedding band. I'm not a diamond fan and didn't want one way back when--just my personal preference. If I'd have thought of colored stones, I'd have wanted to looked at those. It didn't even enter my head, and the only thing the jewelry stores had were diamond rings.

I know it's not the vivid royal blue many people prefer in a sapphire, but I love love love it.

ooooh! That looks like spring time! What a yummy colour! I remember reading somewhere about a description of a Montana Sapphire and it ran from "blue jeans" to "williamsburg blue". (yeah... who comes up with the colour descriptors??) but that looks amazing! Very eager for more photo's - sun/shade/indoors..... hurry!!!

That is a gorgeous stone-- I love Montana sapphires too, and that is a really, really gorgeous stone! Does it exhibit a color change in different lights, or is it just hard to photograph? Either way, it is beautiful! I love that color!

Thanks, LD! That's what I think, too. There's no right or wrong where gem stones are concerned. It's very subjective, so get what you love. Oh, and I got THE ONE when hubby and I got married. The sapphire is just a bonus.

Thank you. Dana hand selected this Montana sapphire for me from about forty stones that his friend Paul had, as he did not have a Montana the size I wanted, at the moment. He was a GREAT help to me and answered my questions by email very quickly. He is very much a gentleman, too.

The sapphire does change color according to the light, but is always green. Sometimes there appears to be more blue in it than other times, but green is the main color, which I love. I don't think it is what you would call a "color change sapphire". Can't wait to get it set into a ring!! I will have to post more pics then.

I love the rarity of Montana sapphires - the fact that they actually come from the US. I also love that distinctive steely blue/green shade that seems so characteristic of the Montana stones. (I know they come in other color, including a more true blue, but this is the color I've seen most often.) Most that I've seen are much smaller than yours though - isn't it kind of unusual to get one that large?

I suspect that once you're wearing your ring, you'll occasionally run into someone who says... "say, isn't that a Montana sapphire?"

Wouldn't that be cool?

I would call this one more of a colour-shifter, and I suspect that it is one of those stones that the color metal you choose to set it in will have a strong effect on the color it appears once it's set.

Yes, it would be cool to have someone recognize it as a Montana sapphire when I'm wearing it. And I do think it's good-sized for a Montana from what I've read. I asked him for something in the 1.5 to 2 carat range.

Yes, he is! And I may come back here to ask opinions about a setting. It will be yellow gold, most likely a solitaire, but even then there are SO many choices.

Yes, he's a keeper and it was very sweet of him! I just felt SO bad that he was trying to buy me a gift and it was absurdly huge and nothing I would want to wear. I'm glad we eventually both saw the humor in it. We didn't do anything with the topaz ring yet. It is nestled safely in its box waiting for Halloween...J/K. I really don't know what we'll do with it.

Your post made me laugh. Thanks for the congratulations, but we have already been married for *ahem* a while now. My wedding band is a yellow gold, domed band. I tend to go for simplicity and not ultra bling. I like solitaires or other fairly simple settings, and also Celtic rings and some poesy rings, the ones that have a carved design on the outside and a message on the inside.

Yes, Dana was great to work with, so helpful, kind, and gave great service. He answered all my questions before and during the transaction and when I wasn't sure about the sapphire (we wanted an appraisal but couldn't find anyone to do it in the Christmas rush) he was willing to extend the time so that we could be sure of what we wanted. We ended up not getting an appraisal after I got some opinions of the good folks here, but I was very happy with how Dana handled everything. I give him a big thumbs up.
