Hello lovely people, Please may I ask what mode of reselling would fetch the highest resale (not exchanging and not upgrading) value for a branded e-ring from, say, HW/Cartier/Graff? Independent jeweller, eBay, 1st Dibs, or straight to auction at Sothebys/Christies? Thank you.

Interesting question, how much more can you get back because a stone is from a high end jeweler vs a non branded stone?

Perhaps The Real Real. The certify the piece is authentic.

Auction if a very high end piece...

Most reputable selling venues charge commission to sell your piece. Fees vary.
Consignment is popular but you have to “wait” until a buyer comes along. Auction is much more immediate, you can set a reserve, but the commission applies to both sellers and buyers. So the $100,000 hammer price means around $80,000 for the seller and $120,000 total cost to the buyer.
eBay would not be recommended for a high end piece unless you have vast experience in selling on eBay and again are happy to wait until the buyer comes along. eBay and PayPal fees total around 13%.
Selling privately ie Loupe a Troop is possible but again it’s not really appropriate for high end, expensive pieces, not enough “traffic”.
If you can wait for your money I’d chose consignment, if you need funds more urgently, Auction would be better. But you never know with Auction if 5 people will be bidding frantically for the piece or if there will be just 1 bargain hunter hoping to get a fabulous deal.

1st Dibs is just a collection of jewelers who list things for sale there. It is never a good idea to go through 1st Dibs to buy because they charge a 25% commission. Always go directly to the jeweler listing the piece.

Most of the resale sites sell designer purses and jewelry. I think it depends on the value of this piece as to the best place to list it for sale. If it's very high value, you might want to use an auction house. If it's lower value, you can use a consignment dealer like Ann's Fabulous Finds, for example.

By the time you pay commission or auction fees, you'd take a significant hit unless the item has gone up a lot in value. Never buy a branded piece with the idea of selling later because diamond prices actually go down as well as up.

One major thing that you need to provide is sales receipts or updated authentification of the item from the brand jeweler where it was purchased. There are plenty of fakes, and people would need to check and make sure your documents are authentic.

They've had some problems, so I'd be wary of using them.

As others have said, try a jeweller/dealer.

Commissions can be as much as 50%, but if they have the right clientele, it can be worth it.

Better to get $50k of a $100k sale than $40k of a $50k sale ;)2
