I got this little guy in the mail today. Its like 5x6.5. I like it.

Looking to set it in silver as I want a very white metal but don't want platinum.

Setting ideas welcome. Part of me wants to pair it with something crazy. Part just wants it e/w with a few pave down the side.

The darkest pictures are in direct sunlight. The lighter are in the car and the office. :)

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

Never thought I'd like a grey stone, but I like it! Classy in a way that I can't describe well. I would keep it simple and not pair it with side stones to let it shine - pave for extra sparkle would be pretty too. If you want super white metal, start out with whatever silver-colored metal fits your budget for a setting and have it rhodium plated - it will be gorgeously white to contrast nicely with the spinel :-)

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

Yeah that's what I was considering, rhodium plating it. But I thought the right silver might just be white enough. Though the rhodium light keep the silver looking fresh.
Though specifically making iodized or whatever its called.
I have some 3mm stones that might work. They aren't exactly the same size but I was hoping if I did this setting maybe the bezels would even out? But they might be too yellow. I have to see them together.

Interesting. Where did you get it from?

Hard to photograph little boogers, aren't they?

Haha is interesting good or bad?

Yes very.

A eBay vendor. I can't rmemebr quick I'll look it up. Had good reviews when I googled it and PS though.

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

Just interesting. I guess I was surprised that it wasn't precision cut because they've been the only ones popping up lately.

Post more pics!

Oh yeah. Those just seemed too purple for my liking so I took a chance on this one. Has more blue to it. Though a lot of the blue you see on one of those pics is the sky.

Again its dark and I'm currently at the office. But let me see what I can do for more pics.

Idea on setting?

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

They are very shifty. Have you seen it under fluor yet?

White metal for sure. You want something like the RDG?

I'm not sure what the lighting in in my office but office lighting, direct sunlight and diffused sunlight so fad.

Yeah currently I'm leaning toward the three atone with setting ignoring set and the sides bezeled. I'm going to have to see if those stones are similar enough shape to be in a three stone. I'd set the oval e/w I think. iodized (that's the word right) might be cool

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

Here's one I got with it on calculator at work

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

Niel, I think maybe you mean oxidized, rather than iodized?

Probably. I knew I wasn't right but I knew if I got close some smart PS would help a girl out ;)

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

What about a rose gold bezel setting?

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

It does not look badly cut to me and if you like the color, then I think you did well. I personally like more of a size difference between side stones and center stone, so not sure I'm loving your example, but like the concept. Also, I don't know what its main personality is, but just be careful that you don't end up with white on white on white in some situations if you do diamonds and white metal with it. I say that because while it definitely looks grey, it does not look like a dark grey.

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

it is so pretty! do you happen to have a couple chrysos you could put it next too :D

I feel like rose gold might bring out the grey as a contrast too!

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

Really, really pretty! It does look less purple and perhaps lighter than mine, but I really wish we could compare in person! They are truly impossible to photograph... I haven't had time in the daylight to make it work for mine yet.

I think a slight size different in side stones would look fine, but I really like organic, rustic styles like these (http://www.twistonline.com/rings-wedding/_/showAll/1/). I think oxidized silver around bezel or prongs would be really, really cool.

The nice thing about a trinity w band is I always have colors at my fingertips for these things.

I think the rose gold beings out the ever so slight slate blue in the stone, which I don't want to accentuate

They are hard! I only had sunlight for a hot second today (lake effect the last 5 days) but it gets darker out there. I got a pic of it in a grocery store lighting.
Also I got some pics of the stones. They seem noticeably different but I was hoping you might be able to bezel it in a way that eats up some of the larger one, then is just thick on the smaller one to even them.

Oops forgot the other one

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

Well the good news is that it will darken up in a bezel setting, even if the bottom is open, so it will have a greater contrast with the side stones.

Oh sorry. I want it like the inspiration. Bezel the diamonds prong the spinel.

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

Heh, heh, shows how observant I was! :wink2:

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

I think it'd be fine with the two stones as pictured. I'd definitely stick with white metal.

The color kind of reminds me of my Barry gray, which is set with tapered bags in white gold.

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

Very pretty!

I like this metalsmith's info page about white metals, which includes a photo of 7 different ones next to each other -- perhaps you too will find it helpful:

Re: My attempt at a grey spinel.

I'm confused; do you want a very white metal or a very black metal? Oxidized silver and oxidized white gold makes a typically white metal look darkish or black.

I'm toying with the idea of either.

If I am not mistaken, you need to re-oxidize the metal from time to time because it wears off, sometimes in a matter of weeks.
