My chartreuse chrysoberyl -- sell it or set it?

I totally understand. I'm a wearer too, and I don't like having loose stones just sitting around. There's no point having a stone like that sit around and get ignored when it could go to someone who will do something awesome with it!

If you decide to sell, you'll have plenty of takers who will give it a good home. It's beautiful -- you could use that stone as a flashlight, I swear. It's important that you love what you get & if you've realized this one doesn't make your heart thump, then it makes sense to put the price toward something that does.

If I had that chryso I wouldn't care what people thought it was, though it is annoying. Most people think my blue spinel is a sapphire -- kind of grumps me, but I can't fault them for not being gem nuts like me. "Spinel? Never heard of it." So I explain about spinels as their smile freezes on their face & they try to be subtle, looking over my shoulder for somebody sane. And I come home to dive into PS!

Chrysoberyl is never mistaken for a peridot, ever. I have an old peridot ring, an inheritance from my MIL, and while it is a better, old-time stone, it is,somewhat oily, and your stone is sparkly! Giving something to a friend who'd appreciate is a great thing. It is enlightening, I can not find a better word. You are giving to your friend a very beautiful stone which she'll love and appreciate.

lula, do what you must..... it's lovely and I'll also be lurking on pre loved! :Up_to_something:

Many of us will be staking out the Preloved section for this chrysoberyl.

Lula,
You have to do what is right in your heart and mind. It is a gorgeous chrysoberyl and I know it'll go to someone who will treasure it very much. I cannot imagine anyone not falling in love with the fabulous colour and cutting at first sight.

I'm coming back to this thread to reply to all of you. I haven't had a lot of time to post in the past few weeks.
Thank you, Chrono. I fell in love with it at first sight and that really is what makes me hesitate. It's the only colored gem I've felt "that way" about, ha-ha.

Thank you, purplesparkles and ChrisA and wordie89. It's nice to know that this little guy has so many admirers.

That is a beautiful stone, Lula! Notice how it shows off even with diffused light - it practically glows in the shade because of that neony saturation. Keep it!

Hello, Kim -- this thread and this stone have taught me a lot about saturation. It does hold its color across lighting conditions and that is very important to me. I don't think I fully understood how much saturation affects a colored stone's beauty until I saw many, many under-saturated gems in my [so far failed] search for a sapphire.

Yes, I couldn't agree more, jstar -- it seems like such a waste to leave gems sitting in the dark in their little boxes. I don't feel this way about diamonds. But diamonds don't have the emotional pull for me that colored stones do.

JewelFreak -- thank you. I keep thinking about your flashlight comment. It's true, this stone is very bright and it is bright even indoors and in low light. It's mesmerizing.

Thanks also for your comments about your spinel -- I've always admired your spinel, and the setting you chose is perfect for it. I've seen enough spinels and sapphires in my life to know how different they are in appearance; however, I think it's safe to say that 99% of people have no idea what a spinel is or that they are valuable and durable and come in so many colors. Good for you for your attempts to educate people despite them looking at you like you've lost it. I know the feeling -- my local lapidary and the jeweler I use for repairs were not at all familiar with chrysoberyl, and they go to Tucson each year, so it's not as though they live in a gemstone vacuum. But they looked at me like they thought I was imagining things -- "oh, that poor girl who thinks her peridot is a chartreuse-something-or-other"!

Thank you, Arkteia. I do know what you mean about peridots not being as sparkly. But they are so much more common than chrysoberyls that people -- even jewelers -- see the bright green color and just assume it's a peridot. I've now owned this chrysoberyl for nearly two years, and I'm finally able to shrug off the peridot comments; I now look upon myself as an "ambassador" for chrysoberyl, ha-ha.

And thank you for your sweet comments about giving this gem as a gift to my friend. It does make me feel good to think about giving it to her. When I talked to her about this, she said she'd love to have it, but suggested that before I sold it or gave it away, I should set it and wear it for a while. She thinks the original halo setting was the problem (too elaborate) and that I should take the advice of the PS'ers on this thread who suggested I set it in a square head. I've been waiting until after the holidays to start looking around at settings, but I think her suggestion is a good one.

Thank you, Chrono. I have decided to set this stone and wear it proudly. Ironically, it was your pink tourmaline and blue sapphire threads that swayed me! I haven't had a lot of time to post in the past few weeks, but I do read as much as I can on CS because I learn so much here. Your pink tourmaline thread showed me how nice a round stone can look in a square-ish setting. And the discussion on your blue sapphire thread was a lightbulb moment for me in terms of my understanding of saturation and tone. Your sapphire is so very blue and it's so wonderfully saturated. I was glad to see that you decided to keep it. Your sapphire thread helped me understand that if I sold this chrysoberyl, it may be a very long time before I'd find another as nice. Richard Homer described this stone as "vivid" and I don't think I really knew what that meant until I'd seen enough gems that were clearly not "vivid" or even "strong" in saturation to compare. So many gems being sold -- even in expensive stores -- are washed-out looking. So, thank you, fellow, CS'ers, for all the time you spend educating newbies like me about colored gems. My New Year's resolution is to find a nice setting for this stone. :wavey:

Wise decision! :appl: :appl:

I'm glad you are keeping it and planning on setting it - it is a gorgeous stand-out chrysoberyl that deserves to be worn!

I actually realy like this chrysoberyl. I'm not extermely familiar with the stone but I think this has a wonderful glow. I really like it. It would look great bezeled in green gold.

That's a beautiful stone! I would keep it :)

I am so glad you are keeping it-- beautiful chrysoberyls are under-rated and hard to find!

Although some might be disappointed in not having a chance at the chrysoberyl, I'm over the moon at your reconsideration of keeping such a beauty. :praise: I'm also glad that my own dilemma was a help in sorting yours out too. I look forward to your 2013 project to reset it into something that you'll look forward to wearing every morning.

says the woman who has one of the most beautiful stones I've ever seen!

I apologise because I've only just seen this thread! I was going to say if you're having any doubts then you shouldn't sell it. You would probably regret it and I'm glad that you're going to keep it.

However, it does need to be re-set so that it gives the illusion of a cushion or square that you're more comfortable wearing. There are settings that could do that for you easily.

One thing I agree with you is that this will be mistaken for a peridot BUT only by those who don't know gemstones. If somebody knows about gemstones the difference is clearly obvious. At the end of the day, don't worry about this - YOU know what it is and how special it is.

I LOVE the color of this stone and I'm sooooo glad you are going to keep it and wear it. I'm an August baby so I have a few peridots and while I enjoy them for what they are, they never sparkle like my chrysoberyls.

Yay!! I think that's a good decision, even if I was one of the people keeping a close eye on the Preloved board. ;)

I look forward to seeing how you set this beauty!

I typed out a long response with replies to each of you and PS ate it -- agghhh. So let me just say thank you all again for your kind comments about my chrysoberyl. I am looking forward to setting this stone and wearing it. I am thinking about a cushion-shaped bezel in high-carat yellow and/or green gold, similar to the setting Nielseel posted (whose setting is that?!? -- it's gorgeous!). I'll start a new thread.

Oh, and erinl, your chrysoberyl is gorgeous! I took a look at your thread on it. In fact, I'm going to spend some time reading all the PS threads I can find on CS members' chrysoberyls for setting ideas (sorry for the very confusing sentence).

The asscher chrysoberyl set in green gold by Whiteflash belongs to a PSer named Mochi, who no longer frequents the board.

Thanks, Chrono. I found a thread with photos of her stone and setting. There are some lovely, lovely chrysoberyls on CS. So far I've found:

Chrono's
TL's
Packrat's
erinl's
Davi's
Mochi's
Kim's (not set yet?)

I'm thinking about setting this stone in a 5-stone ring with diamond sidetones, probably antique OEC's or rose cuts. I'll start a new thread with some inspiration photos.
