My G/H diamond looks yellow. Opinions?

Hi everyone,

I am very new to all of this. My boyfriend proposed to me on Saturday and I adore my ring! I have one issue that I can't help but notice though, the center diamond seems to have a slight yellow tint compared to the rest of the stones in the ring which appear bright white. I looked at the paperwork and the jeweler listed the center stone as G/H as well as the rest of the stones in the ring as G/H. If they are all the same color, why can I see a yellow tint in the center stone? Is this because it is slightly larger than the rest or is it possible that they graded it wrong? I e-mailed the jeweler and I will be taking it in to be examined when I get home on Friday. If it is not a G/H diamond they have agreed to replace it with one that is.

Should I be seeing a yellow tint in a G/H diamond? From my research on here, it sounds like it may not be a G/H. Please let me know your opinions. I hope all goes well on Friday and they do not give me a hard time. I know I am not crazy and can definitely see a color difference between the center diamond and the rest of the diamonds.

I have included a picture but because I am on vacation I only have my phone to take photos with. Unfortunately, it's hard to capture in a photo!

Thank you everyone for your time. Any help/ opinions/ suggestions is so appreciated. :-)

it will pick up colors that are around it, are you in a very yellowy room, soft lighting things like that?

Also, is it GIA G/H or some other cert?

What lab graded the stones?

If this center diamond has a GIA or AGSL report, then there ought to be little doubt that it is the right color so long as it is the correct diamond. The only thing the jeweler can do is measure the exact depth to be sure it agrees with the report. The rest is guesswork.

If there is no cert for the center diamond, then getting it out and grading it will be necessary. You might want to compare an unset G/H stone right next to the ring before removing the center diamond to see if a new G/H looks better. Be sure the new G/H has a GIA or AGSL report. Don't accept a lesser report or no report diamond unless you have absolutely no alternative. It is a sticky situation for sure.

The photo you made is quite good and does show some color in the center which could be the diamond, the lighting or the environment the photo was taken in. It could be a combination of the three. I think comparing your center diamond to an unmounted potential replacement of known color would be what I'd initially recommend. Good Luck and keep us all posted on how it goes.

I agree with the others that the photo does show a slight tint- of course no one can color grade a diamond accurately in a ring- much less a photo of a ring.
But the grade itself tells us something.
G/H means there's no GIA report as they don't issue split grades on loose diamonds.
GIA actually does have a service where they give a grade on a set stone- and it would be a split grade ( G/H) - however reports like that are virtually never seen.

Diamonds reflect. If your walls or shirt are beige or yellow or some color like that...that's what you are seeing.

If the diamond is AGS or GIA graded you should be fine. If it's not, that's the problem.

This.

I hope the stone is GIA graded.

Your ring is gorgeous!!! Congrats on your engagement!!!

I have a G colored round 0.61ct diamond with colourless baguettes on either side. I was thinking that perhaps I am more color sensitive than I thought because I was picking up some slight yellow tint in the stone. Then I moved into the next room and it was perfectly white. Try it in lots of different lighting situations and see if that makes a difference perhaps?

I think if it's a true G color, it ought to be whiter than it appears in that photo. Many stores are selling diamonds graded by EGL, and they are not using the same color scale. An EGL G might be a I/J color if GIA or AGS were to grade it. You diamond looks more in the J color range, to me. "I" is usually said to be where most people can start to see color.

My local jeweler always wants to send diamonds to EGL to be graded, so definitely check whether or not your diamond has a lab report and if it's from EGL.

most likely not GIA or AGS graded,b/c she said G/H color.

I'm not getting a good feeling about this since the paperwork listed it as a G/H split grading, meaning it is likely to be a stone that isn't graded by GIA.
