Ok I''m looking at an engagement ring for the woman, I don''t know what to get. Went to a very recommended local Jeweler just to look around and found they seemed to have pretty comparable prices to online stores. I looked at 2 different stones. Here they are:

Both are GIA certified, Cut was rated "Very good" for both, and they both come set in white gold for that price.

1) 1.00ct E VS1 $6000
2) 1.16ct I VS2 $4000

I honestly couldn''t tell a difference between the two, only the second one was a little bigger. The guy at the store said that 90% of the time people would pick #2 because it''s bigger. I usually buy stuff with the "get the best" mindset, but here it seems like #2 would be the better buy, since you can''t tell the difference with the naked eye and it will be her first stone (she can upgrade later). Am I crazy?

Thanks for any advise,

Can you post the GIA report number?

No I don't have GIA numbers, can you look up the reports online with just the number?

Sorry... I also forgot to mention that these are round cut.

Ryan...these prices don't jive, too cheap, better get more information.

You need a lot more info to make an informed decision. Get the GIA numbers as SC mentioned, buy your own idealscope, and start probing... 5k is a lot to spend on something without knowing all the details//

OK guys, I got the GIA number for the 1.01 E VS1 -12785604- $6k in platinum

Let me know what you think

Quite an old stone.

http://www2.gia.edu/reportcheck/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.showReportVerification&reportno=12785604&weight=1.01

Quite a deep stone, might have some leakage but no way to tell as this is an old report and GIA only starts giving out cut grade and angles stats after 2005. Ask if it is a buy back stone? If so, best to request that it be regraded by GIA or get it independently appraised as used stone might have chips or wear on the girdle, dropping the clarity grade below a VS1 changing the value of the stone/
