Hi All,
I've been a lurker on PS for many years now ... double digits if I think back to when I first found the site.
I am finally posting as I have a ring to share.
I spent about 7 years wishing... and then finally realised I should start saving, not just ogling and drooling at other people's jewellery and thinking it was too far out of my reach.
So I spent the next 5 years wishing... and saving! And thinking hard about what I really really wanted. Which, of course, was impossible to narrow down to just one. However I was always stuck on cushions, and when the antique cushion phase struck, I was smitten. I had a soft spot for ovals as well, partly for the finger coverage, but also for the elegance of the elongated stones.
I was also smitten, always by antique styles and engraving and art deco pieces. And the french cut phase (in 2011) was one of my favourites to visit and revisit, along with anything miligrained and engraved.
I decided my holy grail stone was somewhere around 1.2 - 1.4 carats both for price and feeling like I had something in a size range that suited my hand. And I had seen some cushiony ovals (or more likely ovally cushions) that I thought were really unique and interesting, in a slightly elongated shape, so I began my search.
I purchased a diamond from Jewels by Grace about 2 years ago.
1.17 SI1 I Old Mine Brilliant
6.96 x 6.27 x 3.89
It was the perfect cross between a cushion and oval and has a ratio of 1:1.1 and has a medium blue flourescence, so it faces up bright and white and while it is slightly more rustically shaped than I would have preferred it was always 'The One'. Even in the face of my husband's dubious reaction to the online view .... 'uhhh ... wouldn't you prefer a round stone?'... nope, I felt completely right about this choice.
Grace set her in a silver stuller setting (as I'd maxxed my cash to purchase and ship to Australia .. not a great exchange rate then (or now) for Aussies.
Despite my husband's initial reaction, he opened the box first (I had it shipped to him at his work, as mine doesn't accept deliveries) and he was delighted by how lovely it looked.
Not a great pic, but you get the idea...
And I wore her for very proudly for about a year before the prongs slipped and she wobbled around in the setting and I was worried she would get damaged ... more damaged (?) in a 4 prong setting so I put her aside while I patiently waited to save up again to pay for a permanent setting.
Finally, earlier this year I sent her back to the US to Caysie (CVB Inspired Design). I did look for a local jeweller and got quotes from some, which were expensive, but not a lot more than the amount I ended up paying, but I didn't feel comfortable that I would be able to work with a jeweller who had the attention to detail and could provide me with the quality of the settings, I've seen on Pricescope, and I must admit that if I was finally taking this plunge I wanted to have this done by a master of the art.
I had fallen for Caysie's Casablanca setting (so then worked out why husband's idea of the round diamond might have been a good idea...) and for her work which was such a seamless blend of antique and modern.
I wanted something easy to wear and also that protected my stone. I've always been a sucker for bezels and antique style settings and I had so many ideas for this stone that I had to sort through and get to the heart of what I wanted to wear. It came down to the bezel (although this is a faux bezel, cup actually, with a prong set stone) and I knew that the taper widening towards the stone suited my hand better than an even sized band.
We ended up with 18 ct white gold, rhodium plated with approx 30 pt of side stones tapering down just over halfway round the band with miligrain edging. A double miligrain cup (which was a stroke of genius by Caysie) in a soft emerald cut shape to disguise the slightly wonky outline of my stone.
Here are a few of Caysie's pics of the finished product. I have to say, a great setting makes this stone! I am amazed and super pleased by what a unique and beautiful ring I have to wear.
