This is going to be quick and dirty since I have to go to work in half an hour, booooo!

Anyways, this treasure arrived this morning, I had suspicions that it was a closed back piece and I was right! It is missing one prong holding the ruby. There are no marks on it at all.

Here are a bunch of pictures, just wanted to get any and all thoughts on it especially age because I’ve never seen a ring like this before. I’ll be back later :)

Wow, It's so pretty! Perfect combination of the pink/purple and rich gold. Definitely looks genuine antique. I remember seeing a good few similar ones when I used to stalk UK antique shops. Need to do a bit more research but off the top of my head, I think around Napoleonic era?

It's gorgeous! I especially love the flower details. :kiss2:

Beautiful ❤️
This one reminds me of yours. Possibly Georgian!!??
Maybe it can be helpful to determine a date of manufacture

Thanks so much @goldnsilver, it definitely has a very royal vibe to it. I had a feeling that it was really old but the price was low considering, $350 dollars!

Thanks @natasha-cupcake, I’ll bring it for show and tell next time we meet up ;)

@stracci2000, I saved that one on Etsy when I bought this thinking it would be a good reference point. Would you mind maybe posting this on your antique forum and getting some feedback? If so, no worries. Just trying to find out as much as I can about it.

No clue on age but it’s sweetly beautiful! Enjoy

Pretty! Look at those little handmade flowers! Garnets! I wonder if she's a very old conversion piece?
Early Victorian, I'd guess.

Omg, share that seller! It's gorgeous

Thank you @WhoaNelly, I love that I get to be the next caretaker of this piece.

@ItsMainelyYou, I do love the little flowers on the side, the smaller stones are amethysts I think, that’s what I have to go with anyways for this to be a birthstone ring for me and the kids ;)

@RRfromR thank you and here you go!

Will do!

I love the color of the rubies and think it’s beautiful.

What a lovely find!

Well that’s awesome, that would make it the oldest piece of jewelry I own so far. Thanks for asking @stracci2000!

One opinion I've gotten from another forum is that your ring is likely Victorian, about 1860.
More opinions should come in today.

Nice. I also saw a similar ring yesterday that was quoted circa 1860. I'll try to find it again and share.

My impression is that closed back rings started phasing out around the 1850s, and by the end of the 1800s the majority of gem-set rings with precious gemstones had open backs, although exceptions could be found with settings for some semi precious stones such as moonstones, opals, and garnets.

I mostly collect late Victorian (late 1800s) pieces myself, partly because I'm lazy and try to avoid having to care for closed back settings, so any of these spell "early" for me hehe, and I try to guess very conservatively and broadly. I thought the front of the ring looked early Victorian, as Georgian rings tended to have an overall more "blunt" look, even the ones with similar granules; although you can definitely still see the Georgian/17th century influence on the fluted(?) shank design.

I had a quick look at the eBay shop and their usual stuff is definitely much much newer than this. What a lucky find. :kiss2:

Damn, I was off a bit. So, mid Victorian. I was using reasoning pretty similar to @goldnsilver, but didn't know the start/end date of closed backs(thanks, GnS:bigsmile:)

I'm getting better, though! Yay!

Ah, thank you @goldnsilver your post is so informative and helpful. I hear you about open back being so much easier, I don’t plan on buying anymore closed rings, one is enough! I would keep an eye on their shop, you never know and they do accept offers on their items which is nice.

Well @ItsMainelyYou, your better than me because I have absolutely no idea about jewelry time periods, thank God for the internet!

The shoulder detail! Swoon!

It's beautiful. I'd say it's Georgian.

Thank you! That’s what I would have thought too but I’ve gotten feedback on another forum that it’s not that early. It’s old either way though.

Very lovely!

163 years old is pretty old, I'm my book!

It is pretty crazy to think that something has survived over 150 years, hey maybe someday we can say the same, you know the miracles of science and all that.
