I thought I'd share my latest aquisition...while I will still attest that I am not a jewelry-enthusiast, I definately enjoy either having input in designing the rings, whenever I can. The rings are a way for me to enjoy my stone, especially during the day when I am toiling away at work, while all my stones are in their gem jars. So I get why everyone is into jewelry. I love my stones, so it just works.

Anyways, heres the story!

I had a "phase", before I was interested in gemstones, where I was buying scrap gold pieces. I somehow felt that gold was going to go up dramatically (at the time it was around $1500/oz if I remember right) so whatever extra money I had, I would use to scour eBay and try to win auctions where I felt the selling/winning bid would be lower than the value of the gold...and this piece was part of that.

The ring was sold to be as Victorian, and from the 1890s. It is only 10K, but again...I was buying based on price/gold value and it was a deal. The stone that was in the ring was a synthetic Ruby. Who knew they used lab stones back in Victorian times! (who knows if the stone was original to the piece though, or if the seller was lying about it being from the 1890s..but I did research that lab Rubies were used back then...anyway, I digress.

As time went on, I started getting interested in gemstones, and I had the ring restored. The stone was removed, the prongs were cut off, and it was given a polish and I knew when I found the right stone for it, I would use it for a setting.

Meanwhile, I had contacted Barry Bridgestock and told him that Im on a mission for a RED Garnet. I wanted as red as I could get without it being super-dark like an Anthill Garnet..plus, it had to be big enough for my tastes..as I dont really like small stones. He had two Red Garnets available, the one I bought, and the super-awesome 10MM one thats on his site. The 10MM stone was just a tad purple (or was it Orange...shoot, I cant remember) but itwas only a tad. The other one however, was the red I was looking for!

I had it set by my local bench, who did a great job! Im really happy with how it turned out, and I am still shaking my head that he only charged me $100 for the whole project. I did give him a very lightweight 10K setting that I had, in case he had to melt additional gold for the prongs. He later told me that he wasn't able to do that, so he had to buy the gold wire to do the prongs...but I let him keep whatever gold was there as a tip :-)

Notes about the stone: BB's cutting is just stunning, but everyone knows that. I call Barry the "master of the round". The stone is a medium-dark Red, and set this way is never over-dark. It has awesome Red flash. It is at its best on cloudy/overcast days, or inside in incandescent. The only negative with this stone/ring came when it was very Sunny out yesterday. Unfortunately, the combination of Sunshine and Yellow Gold brings out a little of the Orange..which I was really trying to avoid with the project. I guess I wasn't smart enough to realize that yellow(gold) plus Red=Orange. LOL. But, its very minor, and I'll just wear the Sapphire on Sunny days!! I cant decide if I like the way it looks in overcast natural light (most of the pics) or lower-lit incandescent where its darker but wow, the sparkle is amazing.

Stats: The stone is 8.5mm and 2.97ct, and Barry called it a Malaya Garnet.

Sorry for the length of this post...all for a simple Garnet and a very inexpensive 10K ring...but, I just love it :D

I should have posted these first, LOL. This is the setting before it was restored, and it partially restored.

It looks great on your hand Chris! A very powerful and masculine ring - congratulations on the great find! Is that called a Belcher setting?

Looks great and I love the colour of the garnet in the sun- it just glows! 8-)

LOVE it! Congrats Chris! It really looks great. I love it in the yellow gold and I think the setting really sets the stone off nicely. Really, really looks great!!

En-thanks! It is a belcher setting. I love those cool points on the prongs on the original version, but I couldn't make my nice, elderly bench go that crazy and try to make them. The guy is great at what he does, he told me he was a jewelry-Stud when he was younger...now he just does it for fun

Jbk--thanks!! you know the 'perfectionist' in me is still a teeny bit bothered by the orange from the yellow gold/light getting to the stone...but, I can look past it...Barrys cutting is just wow.

Great ring and great stone Chris - it looks very firey :appl:

Chris, the stone and setting are stunning! The ring looks so good on your hand -- masculine & stylish & that yummy yummy garnet. Really creative thinking!

Nice to hear that it holds its color in all lighting (except for the slight orange) and doesn't close up in fluorescent lighting as so many do. Yes, Barry cuts a mean stone!

Gorgeous ring!

Oooh, I love the cherry red of that stone!

Great setting for it! I prefer YG in men's rings.

Thanks everyone :-)

Laurie...I dont know if I was creative, or just blind luck that I happened to buy something that later Id actually use instead of scrap ;-)

Barry is the man...he just is SO awesome at cutting round stones...

Minou, it does have that little bit of orange..but otherwise, it has really great color. Flourescents darken the stone, no doubt, probably like every red garnet...but its never like a black hole or anything (i have had garnets that are in flourescent). Its at its best overcast/mixed natural light where most of the pics were taken...or incandescent (the pic where its darker, which was under a GE old-style light bulb. The low light incandescent brings out the sparkle though...

Fabulous color!! I truly couldnt imagine anything more perfect for it than YG

I love it! Great old setting and of course the stone is beautiful.

Looks great! Cool setting, love the stone, and it doesn't look orange to me. I like it in the yellow gold as well. Wear it in good health, and hope it helps pass the time at work. :)

Thanks everyone for the kind words and the reassurance if the yellow gold with the stone. I really appreciate it!!! Compliments mean a lot, you all have such awesome stones and rings of your own!!

I probably would have done it in yellow too because white metal might be too contrasting. Fabulous setting and stone combo!

That's a really great looking ring Chris! Beautiful stone that looks terrific in the setting, I love it!

Thanks Junebug!

Chrono, Thanks!! but if I had my choice of setting for the stone, I would have gone with white gold...I just like the look better. Someone mentioned contrast..I think thats something I really like..Thats why I was saying if I was choosing a setting for that hot pink stone you have, I'd go with white gold. (Or, if I was choosing a stone for that white gold setting, Id choose something bright, like your hot pink stone)

I think someone in a previous thread mentioned someones stone or combination of being 'too neon'. I dont think there can be too neon...so the same opinion I'd have with regards to contrast. Which also explains why I want to eventually set a Blue Zircon in Rose Gold.

It just worked out that this was the stone that fit that setting I already had..and, while I like it, I'd still choose white gold if I got to pick :-)

Don't get me wrong, I do love how it looks, and the bit of orange...I dont see it as much as when I first got it (and was initially surprised).

Fantastic looking ring, I love it!

Love the color on that garnet! Really cool setting, too. Looks great on your hand!

Thanks Laila and Derby, I really appreciate it! Its cool having two rings now to choose from (I will only wear one ring at once). The Garnet is nicer on cloudy/overcast days, so when the weather isn't so nice, its the ring I wear to work. When it is Sunny out, I will wear my Sapphire ring (the one in my Avatar).

I envy all of you that have lots of cool rings! I never thought I'd care about jewelry, but its so nice being able to enjoy the stones other than the time that I have to be home looking at the collection. They should make interchangable settings, so I could just pop in whatever stone I want, lol. Too bad they are all different sizes, shapes....and of course hardnesses..if thats a word!

Anyways thanks for everyones kind words! :wink2:

I think I have the baby sister to you stone! I also have a BB red malaya garnet but it is 6.0mm. I bought it probably 2 years ago as my first purchase from Barry. Now I'm selling it as DSS sets in! So wish I could have had the larger version! Great piece!

Thanks, Sarah! I get the gist of what you are saying...I don't care for small stones (but I am trying to get over this). Anyways, what is DSS?

Diamond shrinkage syndrome

HAHAHAHAA! Thank you Minou!

DSS is so true. I love the combo of red with yellow gold!

Thanks!

I've never had DSS, cause I've never liked small stones. LOL. I am trying to appreciate them, though. I wish I wasn't as picky as I am as far as stone-size because then I could be able to afford stones that right now, I cannot.

Love the setting! And good job renew it!
