You might want to skip the story below because it's not all that compelling, but the point in the end is that settings matter.
I ended up with this 2.1 ct O VVS1 AVR awhile back because I was looking for a light yellow stone to make make a ring similar to Queenie's CVB Casablanca. Caysie had a wonky, warm OEC that she decided might be a recut candidate and sent it to Jonathan (of August Vintage Inc) to recut into an AVR, and I called dibs on it! It was beautifully cut (she had asked for high crown, small table, not too deep), but I was worried it was not yellow enough. I hung onto it and even tried to list it to see if it would sell. Eventually I would go on to buy a beautiful yellow antique cushion sapphire cut by Jeff White, and following that, I came across an early AVC 1.6 ct, Y-Z color that Yoram was selling!!! I decided diamonds came first, so I decided to set the more yellow diamond, the Y-Z AVC. I listed the sapphire and the AVR, but neither sold. So I got the great idea to have Caysie set the AVR because it might sell more easily set, since people seemed to be afraid of O color.
Yesterday afternoon, Fed Ex delivered my package from Caysie of CVB Inspired Design. I had seen a picture, but pictures never really do justice to diamonds. Caysie wanted me to see the ring before having her list it for sale. Well, to my surprise, the stone absolutely came alive in that setting! It honestly looks as yellow as the Y-Z AVC (which you'll see in pictures below)! But it's bigger! (2.1 cts and 8.1mm) It sits in an 18k gold yellow gold bezel and the shank is yellow gold with platinum shoulders, halo, and gallery. The details are meticulously done..the tiniest milgrain and melee in the halo, very tiny claw prongs. The ring is far more dainty than the magnified pictures suggest, yet the ring has presence, too. The diamond looks far bigger with the halo than my solitaire AVR that is 8.4mm. The Casablanca has long been one of my very favorite halo settings, and it was bittersweet to think of seeing it and sending back to be sold.
But....I can't sell her. You see, the finished ring even convinced ME that the stone, while beautiful on it's on, became far more beautiful set in the right setting. I give all the credit to Caysie, as I basically let her choose the best metals for the stone, and she nailed it. (Now I do have to rethink what to sell, though! )
