Ok, I'll admit, being a guy it might be a little wierd to get excited about a piece of jewelry, but I am excited, because now I get to look at one of my gems anytime I want, and not have to wait until I get home to look at the collection!

This is my new ring..its been a little while, but I finally have it on!

The stone: This is a Heated-Only Sapphire from Madagascar. It weighed 2.55ct and measures 8.5x6.1mm. It came originally from Tan, and I was lucky enough to buy it from a PS'r. It is the perfect color that I was looking for, a nice Royal blue, perhaps Medium Dark, nice saturation. It had some zoning issues, and had a window...but it faced up a great color blue and the zoning wasn't that noticable. I decided it was going to be THE stone, so I then sent it to Dan Stair to see what he could do with it.

Dan Stair said he could improve the zoning, and close the window, by recutting part of the Pavillion. I believe he said the culet was slightly off center, I am not sure exactly. When I got the stone back from Dan..wow! It is stunning! The zoning is all but impossible to see now (aside from the side of the pavillion) and what a difference his tweaking/recutting made! I cannot remember how much weight was lost, as it wasn't important to me, but I believe it was about .20ct if memory serves.

Next, I had a .25ct white Diamond from my previous ring which I scrapped, and I was very lucky to find an almost exact-match on the 'bistro for an awesome price. So now, what to do? I found a picture online of a style that I liked, which I thought would work well with this stones zoning issues...its a bezel set of course, and the way the stone is colored, since it is only the bottom that actually has color, I figured it wouldn't darken up too much and I was right!

The setting: I sent my "inspiration" pic over to Jeff Davies on eBay (Jeffdvs101). Jeff has amazing gemstones, don't get me wrong, but he was happy to create the setting for me even though I had my own stones. He said he could do something nice for me, gave me an estimate (which was very reasonable..despite what Fed Ex charged me to ship the stones...rip off!!!). So I shipped the stones, and two weeks later it was completed, and Jeff was nice enough to Fed Ex it to me free of charge (THANKS JEFF!!!).

The setting is 18k white gold, rhodium plated. It weighs a solid 10grams. It is comfortable, fits perfectly, and looks great on my hand! There is no zoning in this stone! Ok, so there may be zoning, but you can not see it, not with the work they did with the setting, and the design they used. It looks great in all lighting, too. It goes a little violet under the CFLs at home, which is cool, but most of the time its a royal blue or a medium blue. I haven't really studied what lighting does what to the stone, but I love it..never goes black, never even close to going black.

I know my pics don't do the stone or the ring any justice...as my camera always de saturates and darkens stones..but I think you can get a gist of it. Between the smarts of the PS'r buying the stone despite its zoning (bezel set!!), Dan Stairs cutting to help the stone, and Jeff's Jewelry team, I am a very happy camper.

Sorry this got so long!!

Mmmm, I LOVE it.
The stone is wonderful and I especially like the metal work under the stone.

Congrats Chris!! I'm so happy for you :appl: You've waited a long time for this one but the wait was worth it it's awesome! I love the color and I love the ring. Enjoy!

That's stunning!! I want it!!

VERY VERY nice Chris!

The stone is gorgeous! Look at that crown! So vivid and bezeled to boot

I especially like the gallery detail. I like that you've been able to do a three stone in a masculine way. I have lots of stones that could be side stones, but was always weary of doing a threestone. Now, I'm not so worried if I can the proportions right :D

We need more man-rings!

Really sweet - love the high crown and the gallery is perfect to keep it light yet interesting; a great man's ring proving that males CAN wear faceted stones, not just black cabochons. :naughty:

athena...thanks!!!

jbk...I know, its felt like forever...I was wondering who would end up finished first, my Sapphire ring, or your Pear with the halo!

Kenny...thanks, coming from you, thats really a compliment. Especially since one of my Diamonds looks yellow

Its funny, both Diamonds were described to me as F/G color. Well, one must be F and one must be G, and the camera can pick up the difference I guess. My eyes cannot see any difference...not with these tiny stones ( relatively speaking, they are both about 4mm..one is .25 and one is .23)

I wish I had a real camera and not my camera phone..because the stone does look a lot nicer in person. I could never afford this color Sapphire if it didn't have the zoning problems and with this setting and the cutting work that was done to it, you would never ever know.

Davi...I just caught your message before I submitted this. Thanks!! I love this ring as much as I love yours! Ha ha. Yeah, I had a three-stone ring before this, but they were three 4mm Diamonds going across (two are blue) and I hated the design. I didn't want to not use the diamond I had, so I wanted to figure out a way to do the diamonds too. Im not a big 'bligy" person, but I will wear this ring for sure!!

I have a Red Spinel I just got from Jeff also (ill make a post soon) and will want to do something with that one, but I've no idea what. Its a smaller stone, a cushion, I want to say 7x6 ish. Its a great red though. I'd sure love a Chryso like yours...that stone is neon!

Nice ring, great job! Enjoy it :)

Chrono..thanks! The gallery wasn't to make it light though. When we spoke price, we agreed on around 10-11 grams. Jeff asked me if I wanted a gallery. I didn't know what one was and why I'd want it. He told me what it was (and then I knew...I just didn't know the name) and he told me I might want it as it would make the ring more comfortable. Whether or not that is true, it wasn't about weight.

Joe..thanks!

A more open gallery also allows you to clean junk out of there. Actually, I thought a solid band style will be more comfortable to wear over something that is "patterned". I know this is also sometimes done to balance the weight. Stone are naturally heavier, so with an open gallery, the weight is distributed more evenly so that the ring is less prone to twisting downwards where gravity likes to take it. My larged stoned rings have a tendency to spin because they are top heavy even though the fit is very good.

It is absolutely NOT weird to be loving a new piece of jewelry as a guy - it's just absolutely beautiful!! It's got wonderful lines and I agree, the underside is also really nicely done. LOVE LOVE LOVE the blue with white - my own favorite ring ever is a blue sapphire with diamonds in white gold. Congrats!!!

Ok, I'll admit, being a guy it might be a little weird to get excited about a piece of jewelry

Um, . . . no . . . stop it ! So you think Harry Winston, et al, didn't have some great rings they loved? I don't think so.

It's awesome. Beautiful design and great stone ! :appl:

Chrono...good info as always...didn't know that (about weight balance). I did notice a weird design on my finger when I took the ring off to take pics, LOL. Oh well!

Everyone else...THANKS for the kind words about the ring and the encouraging I need to keep wearing jewelry that sort of makes me feel uncomfortable. I will one day have another pendant like the one that Jeff made for me, but I sold because I felt 'weird' wearing it. LOL. I think I have to post a question for the other 'guys' here...

I love your new ring! Congrats :)

Very masculine, strong and powerful looking, and makes a strong statement. I really like the 2 side diamonds and the undergallery is genius -allows light in and easy to clean plus cuts down on weight.
Good choice, Chris - very nice ring!!! :appl:

That is really cool!

:appl: that is one great sapphire ring! i too love the work on the underside. it really looks great on! very clean and masculine lines.

Chrono, all my top heavy stones have a euro-shank and do not spin.

so-oh elegant. It is good that you recut the stone, it looks very bright and blue. And the setting is awesome and very well-made.

Thanks everyone for the comments--I appreciate them! I know I got really lucky finding the stone, as I couldn't have gone on gemfix and gotten one of those awesome 2K stones, but this stone seems to look the part just fine :-)

Its definately a brighter blue today that its rainy/overcast, where in the Sun its a more of the medium-dark/royal color. I think I mentioned that it goes a little violet under the CFL's, like a Tanzanite color.

Since this one I had the design in mind for a while (with that pic with the green stone thats been saved in my pc for over a year) I hope you are all willing to help me figure out what to do with my Red Spinel, which is a much smaller stone :D

Has anyone figured out how to set a Sphene in a ring? haha...you should see this yellow Sphene... :naughty:

Chris - can you take some pics in the overcast conditions? Would love to enjoy the myriad of colours that gorgeous stone must display! Great ring!

Awesome ring! One day I'm going to get a sapphire or blue stone in white metal.

Thanks...the white gold and blue go awesome together. The only thing that I would do different with my next ring I do with white gold, is to do a matte finish...cause I like that look too. I forgot to mention this to Jeff, so Ill save that for the next go-round. I know this ring is plated with Rhodium that makes it brighter, and I think more scratch-resistant but I could be wrong about that. I believe it will have to be re-plated a few times a year to maintain the shine. Im not quite sure where I will have that done, as my local jeweler brings things to New York with him to be plated and I dont want him taking this ring with him to New York

A couple more pics...I wanted to try to catch the lightest color, when its overcast outside. I was a little late..it is brighter out there, but the stone loves it. It doesn't like direct Sun, thats when it is the darkest color. I think this is my favorite color that it does.

It matches the PS colours!! haha!

Looks wonderful Chris - excellent choice! and the bright white contrast with the white metal in your 2 pics, is perfect. Enjoy!

What a beautiful ring! I so wish more men wore jewelry like this. But I guess that's just their loss! I have a blue sapphire (not nearly as special as yours though) ring with diamond sides set in platinum that I've worn every day for the past twelve years. It makes me smile everyday. Not many things in your life can claim that! I hope you enjoy your ring as much as I love mine.

Chris, you did an amazing job designing this from start to finish. It looks fantastic on your hand too.

Thanks, guys!

OK, my last indulgences....haha.

I wanted to try to capture the violet shift that the stone shows under CFLs, which is definately a contrast to the brighter blue of the earlier pics! I love it though. The camera didn't quite get there but I think you can still see the shift. It is a deeper violet-blue in real life. I bet if I had more than one CFL in this room it would be stronger toward violet than you see here.

Chrono, going by the two extremes...the day pic where its bright blue, and these pics where its a darker, possibly less-saturated violet, is this considered a color change or color shift Sapphire by name? Or is it just within the normal tolerances of a blue Sapphire?

In any case, it just makes it cooler IMO, although I understand that if it maintained its brighter blue color it would be more 'valuable'.

Very nice sapphire ring. Great men's style and a beautiful blue sapphire.

My DH has four diffent rings, three of them with diamonds. Go ahead and enjoy your jewelry. And, thanks for sharing your new ring with us.
